7 Teacher notes: Slide 2 Read the information on the slide and write down three key facts about Nigeria s economic development and then define the two key terms. Standard of living is the degree of wealth and material comfort available to a person or community. Quality of life is the general well-being of individuals and societies, including the negative and positive features of life such as physical health, family, education, employment, wealth, leisure, religious beliefs, finance and the environment. Slides 3-4 Slides 6-9 should be printed of for students to use to extract the information (copies of these slides are also included in this word document). You may want to print of several of each slide, or enlarge them to be posters. Students to split into groups of four. Each member of the group is to consider the question raised on their sheet and find facts about economic development in a different region of Nigeria. They should make brief notes and report back to their group. All members of the group should end up with a completed table of notes about each of the four regions. 1. Economic development in rural areas of north Nigeria Explain why growing cash crops benefits the lives of rural communities. By growing cash crops such as rice and cassava, farmers gain an income which can be spent on agricultural improvements such as irrigation and fertilisers which increase yields. The increased yields mean higher incomes which can be spent on health and education. 2. Economic development in rural areas of south Nigeria The price for economic development is too high to pay. Give your views on this statement. Economic development such as the oil industry has resulted in a lot of environmental damage. In the Niger Delta communities have been forced to leave their homes due to the pollution from oil spills. Water supplies have been contaminated and ecosystems damaged. Food chains and food webs have been affected as well Page 7 of 8

8 3. Economic development in urban areas of Nigeria Contrast life in the wealthy suburb with life in a squatter settlement. The houses in the wealthy suburb are permanent well-built structures. The environment is cleaner and greener. There is evidence of a permanent electricity supply. The residents own new vehicles. Population densities are lower with space between the homes. In contrast, the homes in the squatter settlement are temporary unsafe structures and are built from waste materials. The homes are built on the water with no signs of any electricity supply. Transport is by canoes, which are paddled through the canals linking the homes. The population densities are high with many dwellers per home. Overall, the quality of life for the people in the squatter settlement is lower and their standard of living is lower as well. 4. Economic development in a squatter settlement Explore the different options for the future of Makoko. Should the people be moved away so that the area can be regenerated as a business centre or should the area be redeveloped for the current residents? The squatter settlement of Makoko is successful economically as it allows newcomers to the city to live somewhere near the city centre and to start earning a living. The residents can save money towards a more permanent home in the suburbs. However, the settlement is unsafe and unhygienic and it also occupies a prime central location. The city authorities need to be able to redevelop the whole area but the danger is that they destroy the local economy and community as the residents have to move to the outer suburbs. In the long term though, a sustainable solution is to provide the residents with modern services such as mains water and sewage, electricity and telecommunications. These could be provided more economically in an outer suburb of Lagos, allowing the waterfront location to be used as an extension of the CBD of Lagos.
