The Best Metro Americas award was presented March 31. DART was selected over transit properties in New York City, Chicago and Washington, D.C. Integration with other transit modes, customer service, value for money, safety and high performance standards were a few of the categories in which DART was judged. Event organizers said the awards were created, to identify and reward those companies who have demonstrated an unparalleled ability to succeed and continually set standards of excellence. 5 DART Orange Line

18 Rail Projects (DART Orange Line Under Construction) The Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) Orange Line, which will connect Las Colinas to downtown Dallas and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, is under construction. The Orange Line will run parallel with the Green Line through Downtown Dallas to Bachman Station in Northwest Dallas. From Bachman Station, the Orange Line heads northwest to the Las Colinas Urban Center in 2011 and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in The line will also give direct access to the University of Dallas; the Texas Stadium area, where significant planning for major redevelopment is underway; Dallas Love Field, a major regional airport and home to much of the area s fleet of corporate aircraft; and Dallas medical center district, market district and Victory Park. Connections will take riders to Fair Park, Mockingbird Station and other stops on DART s rail system. Steel is already on the ground for the initial segment of the Orange Line. To maximize the connection with private development, Irving city leaders are promoting the creation of mixed-use development within a quarter-mile of each of Irving s eight planned DART transit stations. 20 Bachman Station The Bachman station, located south of Northwest Hwy. on the west side of Denton Drive, is a transfer station where the Green Line and the Orange Line share a boarding platform. Projected opening: December 2010 Parking available: 443 spaces Nearby destinations and attractions: Bachman Lake and the Dallas Police Department s Northwest Operations Division. A truckload of steel for the Orange Line has been delivered to Irving, following the approval of the design and construction contract by the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) Board. The first two phases of rail, which will connect Dallas to Las Colinas, will be completed by December DART Orange Line 20

21 University of Dallas Station Station serves the University of Dallas campus. Character: Catholic, co-educational, liberal arts university with Phi Beta Kappa chapter, and graduate professional education. 22 Lake Carolyn Station At Lake Carolyn Parkway and North O Connor Blvd., this is the site of the Las Colinas Urban Center s most intense and highest-density development. Las Colinas Station is sited directly across Lake Carolyn Parkway, and Water Street, a town center will be about a block away on North O Connor. Lake Carolyn Parkway At Lake Carolyn Station, the light-rail line will connect with Las Colinas Area Personal Transit system, or APT, commonly known as the Las Colinas monorail. The APT connects several Urban Center office buildings and the Mandalay Canal Walk, and will be integrated into the design of Water Street, a major mixed-use development. DART Orange Line 22

23 North Las Colinas Station Near Northwest Highway and the extension of Las Colinas Blvd., this stop will provide easy access to Irving s convention center complex, a meeting facility whose master plan includes a hotel and an entertainment district on an adjacent site. Nearby, North Shore, a mixeduse development, is slated to be built. Convention Center at Las Colinas Slated to open fall 2010, the facility is the first phase of a mixed-use entertainment complex on a 40-acre tract in the city s Las Colinas area. Construction has already begun on the $137-million facility, and the building process is well underway. The facility will have flexible space to serve high-end exhibitions, conventions, meetings and other events. Features include: 50,000 square feet of column-free exhibit space 20,000-square-foot ballroom 20,000 square feet of break-out and meeting space Managed by SMG 12,000 hotel rooms Minutes from DFW International Airport Located in the heart of the Las Colinas Urban Center Components of phase two will include a 300,000-square-foot entertainment venue, 215,000 square feet of restaurant, retail and cinema space, and a full-service hotel. 23 DART Orange Line

24 Carpenter Ranch Station Near SH 114 and Hidden Ridge Drive, the stop is named for the ranch where Ben H. Carpenter, Las Colinas original developer, lived for most of his life. Verizon s campus is also located nearby, and early plans for a mixed-use development are under way. In 1928 John W. Carpenter, the father of the founder of Las Colinas, Ben Carpenter, established a ranch in the area; by 1959 the ranch, originally called Hackberry Creek Ranch, had grown to 6,000 acres. The ranch was renamed El Ranchito de Las Colinas (the little ranch of the hills). It was one of the first planned communities in the United States and was once the largest mixed-use development in the Southwest, with a land area of more than 12,000 acres. DART Orange Line 24

25 North Lake College Station Will serve students at Northlake Community College in Las Colinas, as well as area residents and employers. North Lake College, created as a part of the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) in 1977, is a public community college with an open-door admission policy which anticipates and responds to the educational, training, and employment needs of the community. 25 DART Orange Line

26 Belt Line Station Will serve as a terminus station for commuters. The site can accomodate bus and shuttle transfers and parking requirements. Site layout is configured to encourage development parcels fronting Belt Line Road and State Highway 161. The site is the first of two stations to be located on DFW airport property. The second station will be part of the next phase, which will connect the rail line to the terminal complex. DART Orange Line 26
