4 Annual Review AbouttheCountryEducationFoundation Whoweareandwhatwedo TheCountryEducationFoundation(CEFA)isanational,notNforprofitentityestablishedin2003.We haveafamilyof45communitynrunfoundationsinnewsouthwales,thenorthernterritory, QueenslandandSouthAustralia.Theselocaleducationfoundationsprovidefinancialandother assistancetodisadvantagedyoungpeopleintheircommunities,tohelpthempursuearangeofpostn schooleducationandemploymentgoals. CEFAalsohaspartnershipswith22universitiesandtertiaryinstitutionswhichhaveprovidedover$1 millioninmatchedfundingtocefagrantrecipientssince2003.cefareceivesnogovernmentgrant funding;werelyonfundraisingandcorporate/privatephilanthropytosupportourwork. Bridgingthegapbetweencountryandcityyouth YoungpeopleinruralandregionalAustraliafacehugeobstaclesgettingintotertiaryeducationand jobsafterhighschool,comparedtothoseincityareas.andtheyareonlyhalfaslikelytoaspireto highereducationasyoungpeoplefrommetropolitanareas(acer&2010). RuralyouthalsofacehugefinancialbarriersNupto$20,000peryearfortravelandlivingexpensesN whentheyleavehometostudy,ontopoftheirnormalcoursefees.&accommodationshortagesand risingrentsincityareasmakeitincreasinglydifficultforruralstudentstostudyandworkincity locations theysimplycan taffordtolivethere. Outstandingresults Since1993we vehelpedover2,000disadvantagedruralstudents withgrantstotaling$3.6million (includingconfunding).over90%ofstudentscompletethecourseorprogramforwhichtheyreceive assistance wellabovetheaverageforuniversityandtaferetentionrates.independentevaluation alsoshowsthatcefaprovidesa3:1returnoninvestment i.e.forevery$1invested/donatedto CEFA,$3.10ofsocialvalueiscreatedforgrantrecipientsandtheircommunities(Social&Ventures& Australia&SROI&Research&2011).& &
5 Annual Review Chairman sreport Momentuminanorganisationcansometimesbeconfusedwithactivity.Formypartthereisno confusionwhenonereflectsontheadvancesthatthecountryeducationfoundationofaustraliahas achievedoverthepast12months. Wedefinitelyhavemomentumunderway. Theyearjustdepartedhasseenacontinuingconsolidationamongstthoseeducationfoundationsthat wehavebeenworkingwithforsometimeandgrowthinareasthat,inthepast,wewouldhave regardedastoodifficulttoembarkupon.perhapsafewperformancefigureswillgivesubstanceto thisclaim. Extendingourreach Wenowrepresent45educationfoundationsacrosstheNorthernTerritory,Queensland,NewSouth WalesandSouthAustralia.Oneofthelatestfoundationstobeestablishedundergreatfanfarewas thatinalicespringswhere,withstronglocalcommunitysupport,wehaveembarkedonanambitious programwithengagementwithacommunitythatisconfrontedbytherealitiesofdisenfranchised youthanddespondencywithregardtocareerprospects. Iftheenthusiasmofthelaunching committeeisaharbingerofthingstocomethereisgreatprospectathand. Wecontinuetoincreasethenumberofgrantsdistributedandsawa5%increaseovertheprevious yearwithatotalof386grantsinall.indollartermsthisrepresentsan8%growthonthepreviousyear andtotalledinexcessof$400,000withanaverageof$1,000pergrant.further,our22education partners,representingmostofthetertiaryinstitutionswithinourfootprint,providedanadditional $225,000incoNfundingduringthecourseoftheyear.Inadditiontothisfundingtheyprovided enormousmoralandpracticalhelpindemonstratingthecareerandadvancementopportunitiesthat areavailabletoyoungregionalaustraliansseekingtofurthertheireducation. Originpartnership Inreferringearlierinmyreport,tothemomentumofthefoundation,Imustrecordtheimpactthat thisprovided,bythecontinuationofthepartnershipwiththeoriginfoundationoverafurtherthree years,foracontributedvalueof$300,000.thispartnershiphasenabledustopositionour administration,managementandstrategicobjectiveswithgreatfocus. Further,thepartnershiphas engenderedencouragementtousatatimeofgreateconomicchallenge.thiswasreinforcedbythe supportfromindividualemployeesoforiginenergyviatheiremployeereferralprogram,whereby personaldonationstothecountryeducationfoundationtotallednearly$40,000fortheyear.thisis trulyagenuinepartnershipthatrepresentstheverybestofcorporatephilanthropy. ThisyearalsosawtheestablishmentofeducationfoundationsintheGreatLakesregionofNSWand alsothegwydirlearningregionaleducationfund.soontobelaunchedareeducationfoundations incorporatedintheregionsofshoalhavenandmacleayvalleys. Stabilityandcontinuity ForasmallorganisationwearegenuinelygratefultoenjoyacommittedBoardoftheFoundation supplementedondaytodaymattersbytheexecutivecommitteeofjuliaburtontaylor,guymilson andkatiewalker.thisteamworksverypowerfullywithourexecutiveteamofannabelgay,kate Staniforth(whojoinedusthisyearandisbasedinOrange)andofcourseKatieWalkerbasedatYass.
6 Annual Review MostwillnowbeawarethatAnnabelGayhasmovedtoMelbourneandisduetogivebirthlaterthis year.annabelhasaddedgreatprofessionalqualitiestothefoundationandwheneverimovebetween communitiestheyareinevitablycomplimentaryabouttheefficientandaccommodatingapproachshe hasshowntotheirissuesathand. Futuredirections WearecurrentlyintheprocessofrecruitinganewChiefExecutiveOfficer.Theapplicationsthatwe havereceivedforthepositionarebothwidenrangingandhighlyqualifiedandonecanonlyassume reflectiveofthereputationthatthecountryeducationfoundationofaustraliahasnowestablishedin thewidercommunity.indeedthewidefamilyofindividualsandphilanthropicorganisationsthat ascribetoourambitiontoredresssomeofthenaturaldisadvantagethatruralyouthfindsin advancingfromschooltoacareeriswhatgivesmeconfidenceaboutourfuture. Wehavebeensuccessfulinestablishingpartnershipsofinterestbetweenmembersofoursmaller regionalcommunities,philanthropicorganisationsthataspireforafairergoforregionalaustraliaand corporationsthatrecognisetheneedtoprovidecareeropportunitiesforyoungaustralians. 7 Annual Review ChiefExecutiveOfficer sreport IthasbeenanotherwonderfulyearfortheCEFAfamilyandourgrowingnumberofvolunteersand committeesacrossruralandregionalaustralia.arecord386educationgrantsweregivenoutbyour 45localeducationfoundationsthatworktirelesslytoimprovethelivesofdisadvantaged,young,rural andregionalaustralians. Withintheselocaleducationfoundationswearefortunatetohavemanydedicated,talentedand generousindividualswhogivetheirtimeandexpertiseonavoluntarybasis,yearafteryear.manyof ourlocalcommitteemembershavebeenwithusforwelloveradecade,clockinguphundredsof hoursoftheirowntimetosupporttheirlocalcommunity.thefactthattheyarestillhere,encouraging andfundraisingfortheirlocalyouthistestamenttotheirgenerosityofspirit.itisalsodemonstrates tothestrengthandsustainabilityofcefaandouruniquemodeloflocalcommunitysupport. Supporttofoundations CEFAhasagainmarkedasignificantyearofsupportprovidedtoourfamilyoflocalfoundations.This supplementaryfundingmakesatremendousdifferencetothelivesoftheruralyouthwesupportby furtheradvancingtheiropportunitiesandmakingtheirgoalsmoreattainable.weareenormously gratefultooureducationpartnersandphilanthropicdonorsforhelpingustomakethispossible. EducationPartnerCoNfunding$228,845 EducationAspirationEnhancementPrograms $116,500 ExternalScholarshipsandInNkindSupport$48,050 Additionaldonationstolocalfoundations$75,500 TotalValueofSupportProvidedtoYouthinCEFACommunities$468,895 Newfoundations Thesepast12monthshaveseenafurtherexpansionofourCEFAfamily,withtheestablishmentof fourneweducationfoundations.gwydir,greatlakes,orangeandtheshoalhavenareallnowofficially incorporatedbodiesandgettingrunsontheboardfortheirlocalcommunities. Welookforwardto gettingtoknowthesenewcommitteesandsupportingtheworktheydointheirtownsandregions. Keypartnerships Thefinancialsupporteacheducationfoundationisabletogivetotheirlocalyouthissubstantially boostedbythegenerosityofoureducationpartnersinnsw,qldandsa. Grantrecipientswhoattendanyofourpartneruniversity/collegesreceiveextrafundsfromtheir university/collegeoncetheyhavecommencedtheirstudiesfortheyear.thisleveragingoflocal grantsmakesanenormousdifferencetothelevelofsupportweareabletoextendtocefansponsored students. Formostofourstudents,thisextrafundinggoestowardsthesizablecostofrentandtravelthatthese ruralandregionalstudentsfacewhentheymoveawayfromhometopursuetertiarystudies.
8 Annual Review Experienceprojects SpecialmentionmustgotoMacquarieUniversity,UTS,UniversityofCanberraandtheAustralian NationalUniversitywhohostCEFAstudentsattheirannualuniversityexperienceprograms.These programsofferaonceinalifetimeopportunityforcountrystudentstoexperienceuniversitylifeand whatit sliketoliveinabigcity. Iwasfortunatetohavetheopportunitytoattendtheuniversityexperienceprogramsthisyear,and experiencefirsthandtheimpacttheexperiencehadonalloftheattendingstudents.oneach occasion,itwassoheartwarmingtohearfromthehostuniversitiesabouthowmuchtheyalsovalue theprogramsthathelptoraisetheirprofileandextendtheirreachintoruralandregionalaustralia. Wethankallofoureducationpartnersfortheveryimportantcontributiontheymaketothelivesof youngruralandregionalaustralians. Corporateandphilanthropicpartners Asmanywouldbeaware,CEFAdoesnotreceivegovernmentgrantfunding,sowerelyonthe generosityofourpartnersandsupporterstofundourworkinruralandregionalaustralia.these includecorporateandphilanthropicfoundationsaswellasfamiliesandindividuals.withouttheir support,cefawouldnotexist.wewereparticularlydelightedbythedecisionbyourprincipalpartner, theoriginfoundationtoextendtheirsupportforcefaforafurtherthreeyearperiod. TheOriginFoundationhasbeen andcontinuestobe agenerous,supportive,andinterested philanthropicpartner.thenewpartnershipprovidesforfinancialassistanceatboththelocaland nationallevel,fundinggrantsforindividualstudentsaswellastheprojectsandprogramsprovidedto localfoundationsbycefa,thenationalbody. Administration ThepastyearalsomarkstheconsolidationofCEFA stransitiontoournewlocationinorange,nsw. Therelocationhasbroughtmanybenefitstotheorganisation,includingreducedoperationalcostsand theopportunityforcefastafftoengagemorecloselywiththeactivitiesofalocaleducation foundationatthegrassrootslevel. TheyearalsosawfurtherchangeswiththedepartureofformerCEO,AnnabelGay.Annabelhas movedtomelbourneandsheleaveswithourverybestwishesforthefuture.inthemeantimeiwillbe actinginthepositionofceo,withthecontinuingsupportandassistanceoffinanceexecutive,katie WalkerandtheCEFAExecutiveCommittee NickandJuliaBurtonTaylor,GuyMilsonandKatie Walker.
