New future challenges such as climate change, globalisation and economic and social integration have to be commonly addressed by regions and cities in this area. 8 West Slovenia (Alps-Adriatic Regions & Universities 4 Knowledge Society) "Developing Knowledge Economy through Business-Academia partnerships" 4 November 2011 Ljubljana Geography matters Workshop Organisers: University of Ljubljana Chair : Dr. Stane Pejovnik, Rector of the Univeristy of Ljubljana Ms Katja Cerjak, Head, Office of International Relations Speakers: Dr. Stane Pejovnik, Rector of the Univeristy of Ljubljana Jadran Lenarčic, Director, Jozef Stefan Institute (IJS), Ljubljana Dr. Joze Gricar, University of Maribor Dr. Vito Turk, Deputy Director, IJS Postgraduate School, Ljubljana, Board Member of SBRA Roman Glaser, President of the Board, Perutnina Ptuj, d.d.,ptuj Dr. Boris Cizelj, KEN Chair and President of the SBRA Board Iztok Lesjak, Director, Ljubljana Technologic Park Representative of the Ministry for Higher Education, Science and Technology, Ljubljana Representative of the European Commission, Brussels European universities and other research institutions are realizing their changing role in the globalized economy and have undertaken interesting initiatives. They realize that they are no longer simply providing the local area with graduates but that they find themselves competing on a global scale for students, researchers and industrial partners. In turn, they will need to open up to business and international collaboration, which may also help leverage new funds Sharing knowledge in particular through R&D collaborations with business while a potential source of income for research institutions may well give an important boost to both quantity and quality of the research undertaken. The local event of the Open Days 2011 will raise awareness of the external factors that can stimulate the best results of this collaboration process. The prevalent innovation policies in a given region, the commitment of the financial system and the culture of entrepreneurship will all exert an influence on the success of the partnership. Shared programmes involving industry and financial organisations allow greater control over these external factors and can therefore improve the results obtained. Collaboration can contribute to the regional development through smart utilization of available knowledge and skills on both sides. 8
