2 HE TOP A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT THOUGHTS FROM THE LEADER Milestones in life bring great satisfaction and I am proud to report on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research that we have reached a significant milestone. We have just completed the final year of an ambitious three year plan. Progress was accomplished and major achievements were made in each year of the plan, and the fiscal year was no exception. You will find highlights of our successes detailed in this annual report. As we developed our new strategic plan to steer the Foundation through the next three years, the CFDR Board took time to reflect on what we learned over the past three years and how we might use this new knowledge to guide our new path. Three important elements of our success were identified: LISTENING CFDR, like all charitable foundations, exists to meet the needs of its constituents. In personal interactions and surveys with dietitians, researchers and corporate partners we asked what we could do to make CFDR more valuable and we truly listened to the responses. We will continue to listen. ENVIRONMENTAL SCANNING We live in a changing world. Our economy, the food business, the research community and the world in general is constantly in a state of flux. Staying in touch with what s happening in the world and adjusting programs accordingly is crucial to success. We will continue to scan the environment. ROODING LENDING AN EAR FOCUSSING FIXAT There are so many possibilities for making a difference in the nutrition and dietetic research arena, and it s easy to get carried away wanting to do it all. We learned that through focussing on what we do best we can make the biggest impact. We will focus on specific attainable objectives. While many organizations struggled or failed to survive the recent economic storm, CFDR rose to the top. We attribute this success in what was an uncertain climate to our ability to rely on a strong foundation. CFDR s staff and Board acted prudently in managing the resources of the Foundation and ensured that we continued to achieve our goals. I am both proud and humbled to work with such a dedicated team on the CFDR Board. You will see some of their comments about CFDR successes throughout the pages of this annual report. Any report of CFDR s achievements would not be complete without acknowledging those whose donations of time and money made our work possible. To the many DC members who were inspired to support their research Foundation this year, thank you. To the corporate partners who made donations and provided sponsorships, thank you. And to the volunteers who served on the committees that carried out the FEATS 1 PILLAR 2010 ACHIEVEMENTS Funding research and supporting dietetic researchers are fundamental to CFDR. In the past year, we registered the following achievements: u Awarded 6 research grants (see descriptions of these projects elsewhere in this report). Three grants were awarded in CFDR s New Researcher program, underscoring our commitment to encouraging dietitians to make research part of their practice. u Completed a major collaborative project with the British Columbia Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport: Project Sodium adds much-needed information in the important area of sodium consumption. work of the Foundation, thank you. I hope you are all as proud of CFDR s accomplishments as I am. Mary Sue Waisman, PDt, MSc, FDC President, CFDR TRIUMPHS DEEDS URGING ON ADVANCING NUTRITION & DIETETIC PRACTICE RESEARCH GOING ON FISHING EXPEDI u Presented four regional Morgan awards and a national Morgan Medal. This program recognizes students for their research efforts. NEW THIS YEARu Launched Nutrition Research in Focus (NRF). CFDR constituents wanted to be involved in the research directions of the Foundation. We listened; through the NRF program we solicited feedback from corporate partners and members of Dietitians of Canada on the topic for a large-scale project. Functional foods was selected as the topic for this inaugural program. Information on the CFDRfunded research project is available at:
3 2 PILLAR u Developed a PEN knowledge pathway on quantitative research methodology, introduced in September Dietitians of Canada s knowledge transfer service, PEN (Practice-based Evidence in Nutrition), is an on-line training tool for dietitians. A scan of the research community showed that there s a growing trend towards researchers having to pay to have their results published or posted to on-line publications. We reacted quickly and implemented a new line in our research application budgets, allowing funds for publication and dissemination. This is just one small example of how we re listening to the dietetic research community. Michi Furuya Chang Director, Canadian Scientific and Regulatory Affairs, Kraft Canada Inc. CFDR Board and member of the Scientific Review Committee TELLING ENHANCING KNOWLEDGE LECTURING SERMONIZING TRANSFER INDOCTRINATE TEAC CFDR recognizes the importance of insuring that research results are transferred to dietitians for incorporation into their practices. To achieve the goal of transferring knowledge this year we: u Ensured that new research projects were entered into CINDAR. The Canadian Inventory of Nutrition and Dietetic Research is a vibrant, searchable database that consolidates ongoing food, nutrition and dietetic research in Canada. NEW THIS YEARu Introduced a series of poster tours at DC s annual conference. 45 posters were presented, with 125 conference delegates taking part in this inaugural session. The tours encouraged discussion and informationsharing. In addition, CFDR offered oral research presentations, shared by record numbers of participants. u Hosted two Research Breakfasts: research information was shared with CFDR constituents in November and May (and, later, with all DC members.) Topics included sodium reduction and an introduction to Functional Foods. Both presentations are archived on the CFDR website at: NEW THIS YEARu In collaboration with the Canadian Council of Food and Nutrition (CCFN) offered a webcast on sodium reduction, featuring the CFDRfunded research project of Drs. Anna Farmer and Diana Mager. The webcast is archived until April 2011 at www. cfdr.ca. Dietitians across the country responded to surveys during our marketing audit. We learned that they wanted CFDR somehow to contribute to their knowledge and enhance dietetic practice. We listened and acted; our sodium webcast was one tangible way that we provided an educational resource based on CFDRfunded research to support dietetic practice. Cathy Paroschy Harris Director, Nutrition & Food Services Sodexo, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre CFDR Board Member 3 REPLACING PILLAR IGNORANCE RAISING AWARENESS AND DEMONSTRATING ENLIGHTENING VALUE WORTH Keeping constituents aware of the projects and achievements of the Foundation is important in order to demonstrate the value of their investment. This year we: u Launched our newly-designed website (Fall 2009). The site is easier to navigate, more user friendly and more attractive. See u Distributed our newsletter, Keeping in Touch, three times per year to advise our partners, donors, members and friends of CFDR activities and achievements. In Fall 2009 we expanded our distribution list to include all DC members who made donations to CFDR, in an effort to provide Foundation supporters with news on how their donations were invested in advancing nutrition and dietetic research. u Submitted monthly articles to DC s newsletter, Members in Action, to ensure that the association s 6000 members were aware of CFDR activities throughout the year. u Posted banner ads on DC s website and an advertorial in The Journal of Dietetic Practice and Research to recognize our corporate partners and advise DC members of CFDR s achievements.
4 4 PILLAR ASKING FOR MONEY RAISING FUNDS BANKROLLING THE ORGANIZATION REQU INCREASING THE GRUBSTAKE COLLECTING ALMS GATHERING DONATIONS LO None of CFDR s successes is possible without financial support. As a charitable foundation, CFDR depends on the generosity of individuals and corporations, as well as supporters of our special events. In the past fiscal year we: u Inspired the corporate community to demonstrate support of nutrition and dietetic practice research in order to enhance the health of Canadians. CFDR is fortunate to have the support of many corporate partners, who provide not only financial but also human resources support to the Foundation s work. u Motivated individual dietitians to support their Foundation. More than 400 members of DC made personal donations to CFDR, demonstrating their commitment to the Foundation which supports the evidence base on which dietetic practice is built. This year, we connected with CFDR constituents to ascertain what they felt was best about CFDR and what they thought we could do differently to add value. We listened to what corporate partners and dietitians valued most and we instituted some programs like the Nutrition Research in Focus program to increase the value of their relationship with us. Jeff O Neill Director of Marketing McCain Foods Canada CFDR Board Member NEW THIS YEARu Introduced the Legacy Leader program, a unique way for CFDR to recognize long-term partners of the Foundation. CFDR is fortunate and proud to partner with corporations which provide multiyear pledges, ensuring the long-term stability of the Foundation. The Legacy Leaders program acknowledges the importance of these partners to the strong foundation upon which CFDR is built. Long-time CFDR supporter Mike Hill (left) chaired the first CFDR Corporate Golf Challenge in In its nine year history, the event has raised more than half a million dollars for nutrition and dietetic research. At the 2010 event, Mike graciously participated in a Beat the Founder competition, won by Dave Butler from Pharmexx Canada. NEW THIS YEARu Implemented a process for on-line donations, enabling individuals to donate to CFDR right at their computers. DC members asked for this easy-giving method; we listened. Donors can make their gifts on line at through Canada Helps, an on-line giving portal. u Led two successful fundraising events: the Corporate Golf Challenge held in September 2009 raised $45,000; the May 2010 Fun Run, held at the DC conference, raised nearly $22, Corporate Golf Challenge winning team: Cascades Tissue Group and Saputo Food Ltd. 6 ASH 2010 RESEARCH GRANTS STUDY MONEY COIN FOR EXPLORATION Six research projects were approved for funding through the CFDR Annual Grants program. Three of these were awarded under the regular grants program and three were awarded under the New Researcher program representing CFDR s commitment to encouraging new dietitians to make research part of their practice. The six grants will address questions across several practice areas. REGULAR GRANTS AWARDED Can a preterm growth chart developed and validated in Canada be generalized to other countries? Tanis Fenton, PhD, RD, Alberta Health Services, Foothills Medical Centre A new preterm growth chart, developed in Canada in 2003, is currently being studied to determine its validity in two Canadian cities. With this funding, the research will be able to include the University of California San Diego Medical Centre which will increase the population base and improve the chart s generalizability beyond Canada s borders. What are the effects of conscious food tasting among restrained women? Véronique Provencher, RD, PhD, Université Laval, Quebec This project looks at whether conscious food tasting can influence attitudes and behaviours associated with food and eating, reliance on hunger and satiety signals and the development of taste and olfactory memory in restrained women. The study will provide a better understanding of the effects of an innovative intervention that could help to promote sustainable healthy eating habits. Can a web based tool improve learning in dietetic education? Mary Keith, PhD, RD, St. Michael s Hospital, Toronto The Scenario Based Learning Interactive Program is a web based tool that facilitates independent learning and skill development through the completion of clinical case studies using virtual patients. The research team will test their hypothesis that dietetic practicum students who use the tool in addition to standardized renal education will score higher on tests than those without access to the tool. NEW RESEARCHER GRANTS AWARDED Can food-related policies and land use planning practices be aligned to advance the nutritional health of the population? Jessica Wegener, PhD (Cand), MSc, RD, University of Waterloo This project takes a multi-sectoral look at the development of the region of Waterloo s food system planning policies and related actions aimed at facilitating access to locally grown and other healthy foods. The research aims to shed light on the promising role of land use planning policies and practices in facilitating healthy food access. How can workers in long term care homes be supported to provide person-centered mealtime care for long term care residents with dementia? Holly Reimer, MSc, RD, University of Guelph The researchers will examine the current state of person-centered care and identify practical steps to improve it in four long term care homes. Findings of the study will be used to develop training resources for staff and to provide information to policy makers to improve implementation of personcentered mealtime care practices. What are the changes in nutritional, inflammatory and fatty acid status in gastrointestinal cancer patients receiving chemotherapy? Denise Gabrielson, RD, St. Michael s Hospital, Toronto Patients with gastrointestinal(gi) cancer often experience weight loss, reduced functional status, poor quality of life and short survival time. Standard interventions are not effective possibly due to inflammation and depleted fatty acids. This research will provide a basis for the development of more effective nutritional strategies to improve quality of life of those with GI cancer.
7 INVESTING IN INQUISITION CANADIAN FOUNDATION FOR DIETETIC RESEARCH SUMMARIZED BALANCE SHEET AS AT AUGUST 31, a vital resource of ongoing research projects More detailed information on all of the 2010 CFDR research projects, as well as hundreds of other projects, is available on the Canadian Inventory of Nutrition and Dietetic Associated Research (CINDAR) database. Visit NUTRITION RESEARCH IN FOCUS Launched just this year, the Nutrition Research in Focus (NRF) program features a large-scale research project focused on a specific nutrition or dietetic topic area, pre-determined by CFDR s constituents. In this inaugural year, the program focused on functional foods. The successful research project is Exploration of the consumption, awareness, understanding and motivating factors related to functional foods in older adults. Principal investigators Alison Duncan PhD, RD and Judy Sheeshka PhD, RD, University of Guelph, will complete their research in Knowledge gained through this project will provide insight into consumption and purchase patterns, information sources, perceived risks, awareness of functional foods in relation to health, and more.
