1 2011 Awards Ceremony THE RYLEY-JEFFS MEMORIAL LECTURE AWARD The Ryley-Jeffs Memorial Lecture Award is an opportunity for Dietitians of Canada to recognize a member who exemplifies the ideals of dedication to the profession and has a proven ability to chart new directions in the field of dietetics. Lynda Corby, MSc, MEd, RD, FDC Dietitians of Canada is pleased to recognize the leadership and pioneering spirit of Lynda Corby by naming her as the 2011 Ryley-Jeffs Memorial Lecturer. Currently Lynda works as a Nutrition Consultant. From national nutrition policy development to local food security, from education in primary schools to teaching medical students, from website design to scientific presentations, from community guidance to professional leadership, Lynda Corby has been at the forefront of these changes. In a myriad of roles and activities, Lynda has pushed the boundaries, extended the capacity of dietitians, built solid cooperative relationships with other disciplines and shown that dietitians can work in ways not previously envisioned. Through her career she has played a leadership role. With many international activities, her influence extends far beyond Canada. In 1996 the Canadian Dietetics Association evolved into the Dietitians of Canada (DC) to respond to the increased responsibilities of dietitians. During that critical time in the history of DC, Lynda served on the Board of CDA and DC and was national chair during the transitional period in Lynda has contributed to DC s leadership role on the international stage. She co-chaired the International Confederation of Dietetic Associations International Congress Program Committee in 2004 and has helped prepare for PEN partnerships internationally with the British Dietetic Association and the Dietitians Association of Australia. Throughout her career, Lynda has shown an ability to inspire others to work with her. In her early career, as Provincial Nutrition Specialist and later as head of the Manitoba Home Economics Directorate, she formed an understanding of the inter-relationship between all health professionals. By example she has influenced others to tackle complex tasks dealing with the health and well being of Canadians. It is this constant focus and dedication to reaching out to the community and other professionals that has shaped her life and influenced her friends and colleagues. Her capacity building, her loyalty to the principles of good nutrition, her constant good nature in trying circumstances and the respect she has gained from all who know her are a testament to her successful career. In a changing world with ever-present nutrition concerns, technological change, and government lobbying and consultation, Lynda s pioneering spirit makes her an ideal and worthy recipient of the Ryley-Jeffs Memorial Lecture Award.

2 2 Dietitians of Canada 2011 awards ceremony DC FELLOW Established in 1980, the DC Fellowship Program provides recognition to exemplary members who have demonstrated excellence in their professional growth through educational enhancements, career achievements, initiative/innovation, and leadership in dietetics. The credential FDC has been earned to date by 41 individuals. DC Fellows can be recognized by the gold DC lapel pin they wear. Corinne Eisenbraun, MA, RD, FDC Since 1997, Corinne has demonstrated exemplary leadership for the profession and for Dietitians of Canada (DC) as a member of the Management Team, Regional Executive Director for Saskatchewan, Manitoba and North-Western Ontario and, since 2010, as Director of national programs that support professional practice development. Known as an innovative leader, advocate and mentor, Corinne tirelessly supports dietitians, students, staff, colleagues and collaborators to be successful in their pursuits. Corinne s advocacy efforts are far reaching and include policy development (Advertising of Food and Beverages to Children); practice (Dysphagia Assessment and Treatment Network); and standards (Manitoba School Nutrition Guidelines). In 2009, Corinne put a stake in the sand for the profession when she registered Dietitians of Canada as the lead organization for nutritionday an international initiative that gathers data on the nutritional health of hospitalized patients, thereby allowing countries to profile the nutritional health of those receiving health care and to compare results globally. JUDY VAN TILBURG MEMORIAL BURSARY The Judy Van Tilburg Memorial Bursary was established to help dietetic interns network with other dietitians and to assist them in furthering their professional development through a complimentary DC annual event registration for two DC qualifying members who are currently enrolled in a DC accredited internship/ practicum program. Colleen Miller Colleen graduated with a BASc in Nutrition and Food from Ryerson University in 2009 before deciding to stay another year at Ryerson to complete the Nutrition Communications MHSc program. She has an interest in research, and recently presented her masters work on weight bias discrimination at the 2 nd National Obesity Summit in Montreal, Quebec. She is currently completing her dietetic internship at North York General Hospital and is looking forward to officially becoming an RD at the end of June. Andrea Falcone Andrea Falcone is currently enrolled in Hamilton Health Sciences Dietetic Internship Program. Prior to completing her Nutrition and Food Degree at Ryerson University, Andrea completed a Degree in Honours Life Science at McMaster University. Her volunteer, work and internship experiences have given Andrea a deep appreciation of the importance of the dietetic profession. As a fitness instructor, she believes strongly in promoting healthy nutrition with physical fitness and the benefits associated with these.

3 Dietitians of Canada 2011 awards ceremony 3 UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE AWARDS IN DIETETICS Each year Dietitians of Canada, with generous support from sponsors, present several graduate and undergraduate awards to members and qualifying (student) members from across Canada in recognition of their excellence in academic studies and potential contribution to the advancement of the dietetic profession. Wai-May Wong DC UNDERGRADUATE AWARD $2500 Sponsored by Kraft Canada Inc. Wai-May Wong is a student of Ryerson University s Nutrition and Food program. She previously attended Queen s University and received her Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education degrees. Being an educator guided her career aspirations in dietetics. During her BEd alternative teaching practicum in a Toronto hospital, she had the opportunity to shadow a pediatric dietitian and realized that as a dietitian, she could combine her passion as an educator with her interest in nutrition to promote health. Abbey Fitzpatrick DC UNDERGRADUATE AWARD $2500 Sponsored by Mead Johnson Nutrition Abbey Fitzpatrick is currently the Project Assistant of the Dietetic Educators Network, and has just graduated from the Nutrition and Food program at Ryerson. With an extensive background in performance, Abbey has taken on numerous nutrition communication opportunities, including her first full-length cookbook that she is currently completing. Following her dietetic internship at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Abbey intends to embark on graduate studies with the goal of obtaining a PhD in Food Studies. Melanie Kurrein DC GRADUATE AWARD $2500 Sponsored by McCain Foods (Canada) Melanie has spent most of her career working in the field of community and public health nutrition. In her most recent role as the citywide nutritionist for Vancouver schools, she became interested in understanding the social and cultural influences on teens eating practices. Currently a full time student in the Socio-Cultural Study of Sport, Health and the Body program at Queen s University, Melanie is using qualitative research methods to understand how divorce and living in two homes with different food cultures influences teens eating practices. Karin Dunthorne DC GRADUATE AWARD $2500 Sponsored by DC Memorial Fund A graduate of the University of Manitoba, Karin is currently working on a Master s degree at the same institution. Her research project is on the effects of plant-based dietary fats on obesity and insulin resistance in a diet-induced obese rat model. She has also enjoyed volunteering as a DC student representative and with the Healthy Bites program a program to promote healthy eating in northern communities at the NorthWest Company. Stephanie Schwindt DC GRADUATE AWARD $2500 Sponsored by Dietitians of Canada Stephanie began her Master s degree at the University of Alberta in January Her research will focus on the optimal strategy for vitamin D supplementation to improve vitamin D status and bone health in adults with diabetic kidney disease. Stephanie has already gained research expertise in diabetes and bone health by working with members of the interdisciplinary health care team at the Islet Cell Transplant Program at the University of Alberta; for this body of work, Stephanie was a past recipient of a regional Morgan Award.

4 4 Dietitians of Canada 2011 awards ceremony British Columbia Organization: Vancouver Native Health Society Representative: Rebecca Dunham SPEAKING OF FOOD AND HEALTHY LIVING AWARD A partnership between Dietitians of Canada and Kraft Canada, in collaboration with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP), the Speaking of Food and Healthy Living Award is an annual award program, created to honour initiatives that support Canadians in their quest to eat healthier and be more active. Seasons 4 Change is a program seeking to improve the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health of Aboriginal and non-aboriginal peoples with diabetes in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. Alberta and Territories Organization: Calgary Be Fit For Life Centre Representative: Leah Bell Saskatchewan, Manitoba and North-Western Ontario ActiveAte Organization: Reh-Fit Centre Representatives: Jocelyn Mitchell and Averill Stephenson is a four-week program running twice per week for children aged 8 12 that discusses healthy eating and provides opportunities for physical activity in a fun, non-intimidating environment. The Healthier Weigh Program is a lifestyle intervention program for obese adults, encouraging and empowering participants to make positive lifestyle changes that result in sustainable and permanent habits.

5 Dietitians of Canada 2011 awards ceremony 5 Central and Southern Ontario Organization: South Riverdale Community Health Centre Representative: Annie Chung-Hui Healthy Eating for Life enables the Chinese immigrant population to eliminate system wide barriers and access healthcare resources that are ethnically and culturally appropriate. Atlantic Québec, North-East and Eastern Ontario Organization: Annapolis Valley District Health Authority Representative: Deidre Burns Organization: Université de Montréal, HEC Montréal, École Polytechnique de Montréal Representatives: Tina Tran and Guylaine Rivard 4 the Health of It Ma santé au sommet (My health at its height) is a program developed to improve the physical, psychological and social wellness of the Université de Montréal s campus community. is a chronic disease prevention program which focuses on four critical aspects of health: healthy eating, physical activity, stress management and active participation in one s health.

6 6 Dietitians of Canada 2011 awards ceremony VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION AWARD Dietitians of Canada s Volunteer Recognition Program celebrates our members who have shown outstanding volunteer commitment to the association and dietetics in either an appointed or informal role. By celebrating the efforts of our volunteers, we create opportunities to raise awareness about the vital contribution they and all registered dietitians have made and continue to make to Dietitians of Canada and to Canadian communities and society as a whole. Dietitians of Canada Continuing Education Committee Edmonton The following committee members are recognized for their contributions to supporting evidence-based best practice, the profession s unique body of knowledge, and lifelong professional learning through continuing education events over the past five years. Audra Donison for expanding the leadership and heightening the profession s profile in her roles of National Nutrition Month regional representative, media spokesperson, and resource reviewer for the DC newsletter. Maureen Elhatton for advancing the profession through her leadership and support of lifelong professional learning and development in her role as Director, Alberta and the Territories Region on the DC Board of Directors. Catherine Field for sharing her wealth of professional knowledge and expertise as contributor to and reviewer for Practice-based Evidence in Nutrition (PEN), Current Issues and the DC Journal, and thereby advancing the profession s profile and role in lifelong learning and development. Carlota Basualdo-Hammond for her sustained volunteer commitment to lifelong professional learning and development in the areas of professional practice guidelines and standards.
