1 Proposed ACL Fellows Program proposed by Ken Church and Kevin Knight, approved by ACL Exec 6/19/11 Here are the parameters of the proposed ACL Fellows Program: 0. The ACL constitution allows us to bestow the title of ACL Fellow on the most accomplished members of the association. 1. We will start with a list of founding Fellows, presented for approval to the ACL Exec. Current Exec members are excluded from the founding Fellows group. 2. We will award founding Fellows in October 2011, and use this event to publicize the ongoing ACL Fellows Program. 3. After 2011, candidates for Fellow must be nominated by an ACL member. The nominator need not be an ACL Fellow, only an ACL member. 4. To be eligible, a candidate must have been a member of ACL for the past three (3) consecutive years. This will encourage many people to maintain their ACL membership independent of conference participation. 5. Nominations are accepted by web form ("ACL Fellow Nomination Form", see attached). 6. Nominators contact two (2) additional recommenders and direct them to submit recommendations via web form ("ACL Fellow Recommendation Form", see attached). 7. ACL will not contact recommenders -- nominators are responsible for soliciting recommendation letters and following up. 8. The ACL Nominating Committee will review nominations and award Fellow titles. The Nominating Committee may edit the 20-word citations supplied by the nominators. The Nominating Committee will work without oversight of ACL Exec and without communication with the Exec. 9. All forms submitted by October 1 of a given year will be considered. Decisions will be made by December 1. After this, the Nominating Committee will be clear to work on its job of nominating Exec candidates. 10. We expect about 15 founding Fellows, 15 additional Fellows in year 2, 10 more Fellows in year 3, and then 4-8 Fellows per year in steady state, though this will depend heavily on the nominations we get. 11. Files will be carried over from year to year, so if a candidate is not accepted, re-consideration is possible. (continued next page)

2 Now here is a list of engineering requirements to make this program work! Excellent execution is critical for a program like this -- poor execution can make people irate. 1. An up-to-date list of Fellows (by year) must be maintained on the ACL Wiki. 2. Nomination and recommendation web forms must be programmed. 3. The ACL member portal needs to offer a way for a nominator to check the eligibility of a candidate (i.e., ACL member for past 3 consecutive years). - how can this be done? - ACL portal currently knows about all members - ACL portal currently knows who is paid up this year 4. The address fellows@aclweb.org must be set up. 5. Someone must answer any questions sent to fellows@aclweb.org. 6. Every October: 6a. Someone must gather nominations and letters, package them up, and send them to the senior member of the Nominating Committee. 6b. The senior member of the Nominating Committee must distribute the cases to the rest of the Nominating Committee and drive to decisions by December 1. - who should the decisions be sent to? 7. Every December: 7a. Someone must create and print certificates for new Fellows (including name of new Fellow, 20-word citation, and signature of ACL President) and send those certificates by mail. 7b. Someone must send announcements of new Fellows to the ACL mailing list. 7c. Someone must post a list of new Fellows to the ACL Wiki front page news, and also augment the global Fellows list.
