3 April 2017 ~ 3 Deadline nearing for director candidates Potential candidates for the four director seats up for election at this year s annual meeting are reminded they have until April 10 to file for nomination. Up for election at the June 24th Heartland REMC Annual Meeting are Districts 8, 11, 31, and 36. To file as a candidate, you must secure the signatures of at least 20 Heartland REMC members. The person signing the petition must be the member of record. The signatures can come from any district in Heartland REMC s service territory and are not limited to only the district where the candidate resides. Each director serves a three-year term. Packets of information for potential candidates are now available at both the Wabash and Markle office. A potential candidate can only seek election for the district in which they live. All registered Heartland REMC members are eligible to vote at-large for candidates running each year. For more information or to obtain a packet outlining the director s duties, contact your district office. Duties of a Heartland REMC director Attend all regular monthly board meetings, special board meetings, committee meetings and the Heartland REMC annual meeting. Attend occasional state, regional and national meetings. Represent a district, but be responsible for decisions affecting the entire membership. Directors should work together with the entire board. Read and be familiar with information and financial reports from the co-op. Determine policy guidelines for the daily operations of the REMC. Review work plans and establish a budget. Review contracts for power supply, services and goods, and loans for capital improvements. Employ a chief executive officer to oversee the day-to-day operations of the cooperative. Evaluate the performance of Heartland REMC and the CEO. Report to you, the member, about the financial condition of the cooperative. Must have self-confidence and communication skills to express his/ her opinion or disagreement with other directors. Lives on the line Every year, we take the time to thank our extraordinary lineworkers who dedicate their lives to keeping the lights on in our local communities. Seventeen lineworkers maintain over 2,000 miles of line in Heartland REMC s service territory, and without them, our world would be dark. We depend on our entire staff to keep Heartland REMC running smoothly, but on April 10, 2017, we honor all lineworkers who often find themselves in dangerous and challenging situations, so our lives may be a little bit brighter and safer every day. These brave men and women repair damaged lines and maintain critical infrastructure for our communities. Without their hard work and commitment to the job, our co-op would not thrive. No matter the time day or night, weekday or weekend if the lights go out, so do they. Perhaps you have seen them raising their bucket trucks in howling winds and torrential rains, or in freezing, icy conditions. They work around the clock near high-voltage power lines until electricity is restored to every member in our co-op community. In addition to aiding members in our local service territory, lineworkers are always willing and eager to volunteer when a neighboring community, county or state is in need after a major outage occurs. We hope you will join us in thanking the many lineworkers both locally and around the world that light our lives. Remember, your power works because they do! Use #ThankALineman on social media to show your support. Thank a Lineman on April 10 National Lineman Appreciation Day Lineman sketch: Mark Bridges
4 4 ~ The Heartland Pulse Operation Round Up approves seven grants for local use On March 14, 2017 the board of trustees for Operation Round Up, a community service program of Heartland REMC, approved seven grants. The following grant applications were approved: LaFontaine Lions Club Town Park Project $1,700 Wabash FAME Festival Trophies $500 Wabash County Farm Bureau Farmers Who Care $1,250 Wabash Presbyterian Church Center for Learning and Creative Play $1,000 Children s Choir of Huntington County Scholarship Fund $1,000 Wabash County Historical Museum, Inc. STEM Activity Table $660 Pleasant TWP. Fire Department Fire Hose Upgrade $2,396 These grants are made possible by the generosity of Heartland REMC members. Members who elect to participate in Operation Round Up have their monthly electric bill rounded up to the next dollar amount. The change collected from all the participating members is transferred to the Operation Round Up program each month. The funds are then dispersed by the board of trustees who meet on a regular basis to review the grant applications. Locals who are interested in pursuing a grant must complete a grant application form and submit it to the trustees of the Heartland REMC Trust for review. The next deadline for grant submissions is June 6, Organizations can find more information about Operation Round Up, as well as grant applications, at Restoring Power After a Storm
5 April 2017 ~ 5 Guidance from Garrett your Energy Guru PROPERLY SIZING YOUR HVAC UNIT An improperly sized HVAC unit can wreak havoc on your home. An oversized unit can cause your system to short cycle constantly turning off and on. An undersized unit will run constantly to keep up with demand. Consider the factors below and choose an HVAC system that works best for your home. SIZE MATTERS The square footage of your home can help determine the load capacity of your HVAC unit, but it should not be the only factor considered when reviewing unit sizes. Enlist the help of a licensed professional to determine the best HVAC unit for your home. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION The region in which your home is located will factor into how much capacity you need per square foot. MARINE COLD/VERY COLD HOME S ORIENTATION How sunlight hits your home during different times of the day impacts the load capacity required to properly heat or cool your home. MIXED-HUMID HOT-DRY MIXED DRY HOT-HUMID INSULATION EFFECTIVENESS The better insulated your home is, the fewer BTUs (British Thermal Units) per square foot your home will need to stay at the desired temperature. A reliable energy partner will help you determine how each of these factors affect your system s load capacity. Contact your electric co-op for more information. 6 6 ~ The Heartland Pulse Thunderstorm safety tips from the American Red Cross When thunderstorms are rolling your way, stay safe with these helpful tips from the American Red Cross: Listen to local news or NOAA Weather Radio for emergency updates. Watch for signs of a storm, like darkening skies, lightning flashes or increasing wind. Postpone outdoor activities if thunderstorms are likely to occur. Many people struck by lightning are not in the area where rain is occurring. If a severe thunderstorm warning is issued, take shelter in a substantial building or in a vehicle with the windows closed. Get out of mobile homes that can blow over in high winds. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be in danger from lightning. If thunder roars, go indoors! The National Weather Service recommends staying inside for at least 30 minutes after the last thunder clap. Avoid electrical equipment and telephones. Use battery-powered TVs and radios instead. Shutter windows and close outside doors securely. Keep away from windows. Do not take a bath, shower or use plumbing. If you are driving, try to safely exit the roadway and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside the vehicle. If you are outside and cannot reach a safe building, avoid high ground; water; tall, isolated trees; and metal objects such as fences or bleachers. Picnic shelters, dugouts and sheds are NOT safe.
