2 CHERRY CREST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Emergency Response Plan EMERGENCY ACTION ANNOUNCEMENTS A. LOCKDOWN ANNOUNCEMENT A. This warning is given at the school by the principal or his/her designee. B. Action LOCKDOWN dictates: Bring students into the classroom or hold in the classroom pending further instructions. SEE ATTACHED GUIDELINES C. Action LOCKDOWN is appropriate for: All emergencies proceeded by warning. B. EVACUATE THE BUILDING ANNOUNCEMENT A. This warning signal at the school will be the regular fire drill signal. B. Action EVACUATE dictates: Orderly movement of students and staff from inside the school building to an outside area of safety. (Soccer Field) C. Action EVACUATE is considered appropriate for, but not limited to, the following emergencies: Fire, Bomb Threat, Threat of Explosion, Post Earthquake, Other occurrences which might make the building unsafe. C. DROP, COVER AND HOLD ANNOUNCEMENT (IF POSSIBLE) A. The warning for this type of emergency is the beginning of the emergency itself. 1. Earthquake 2. Explosion 3. Sudden Windstorm B. Action DROP, COVER AND HOLD dictates: A command by each staff person to DROP, COVER AND HOLD C. Action: Students and staff immediately take position under desks or furniture, with backs to windows. DROP, COVER AND HOLD position means drop to knees, clasp both hands behind the neck, bury face in arms, small as possible, close eyes, and cover ears with forearms. When under desk or table, grasp legs and hold on tight D. If outside the school building, move away from building and take DROP COVER AND HOLD position. E.. For Earthquakes: Teacher should be the first one to leave the room. (Deciding safest route to the Soccer Field) In case of injuries: if ambulatory, remove, If not able to move, cover person and choose someone to stay with him/her. Advise Campus Commander as soon as possible, F. Post Help/Clear sign for Search & Rescue before leaving your area. D. STAY HOME ANNOUNCEMENT Radio and television broadcasts will relay information to students and parents when to stay home. In other cases, the Staff phone tree will be implemented.

3 CHERRY CREST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EMERGENCIES: STEPS TO TAKE STAFF PROCEDURES FIRE Fire Alarm Sounds Stop what you are doing. Shut off overheads, VCRs, TVs, computers, and other electrical devices. Immediately evacuate your room using the route outlined on your evacuation map. Students are to be in a line and quiet. Students that are with specialists are to report to the field with their specialists. Students are then distributed back to their primary teacher. Take emergency Buckets & roll book with you. Proceed to THE SOCCER FIELD on the North corner of the campus. Line up according to CLASSROOM/BUDDY assignments. Take attendance. Report missing students using the attendance sheet in your emergency bucket. If Alarm sounds during lunch or any non-class time, students are to report to their class location on the field.

4 EARTHQUAKE CHERRY CREST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EMERGENCIES: STEPS TO TAKE STAFF PROCEDURES Before: Keep the classroom emergency bucket in a safe, accessible place, near an exit. During: Teacher says to the students Drop, Cover, and Hold! Everyone to drop, cover, & hold. Hold on to furniture legs if furniture moves. If outside, move away from buildings. Teachers should demonstrate leadership by firmly giving directions & encouragement (i.e., "hold on," "stay under your desk," etc.) over the noise of the earthquake (most earthquakes last from 4 to 30 seconds- -a very large earthquake might last 60 seconds). After: If an evacuation is ordered, take students out of building & proceed to the field. Use the route as listed on your evacuation map. Use room signs RED/GREEN to assist search & rescue in locating the injured. Take attendance. Report missing students on attendance form found in emergency bucket.

5 CHERRY CREST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EMERGENCIES: STEPS TO TAKE STAFF PROCEDURES Lock-Down If a dangerous situation exists near or on campus, an all-call will announce, We have an emergency; we are in lock-down! Teachers are to lock their classroom doors, turn off lights, and close all blinds. Make sure windows on doors are covered during this time. If students are outside, or outside their classroom, they are to report to the nearest classrooms for immediate safety. Students in the office will remain in the office with staff. Students in the cafeteria stay in the cafeteria. Students at specialist stay with the specialist teacher. Students are to sit quietly on the floor against the walls away from windows. Communication with the main office will be by or phone. The office staff, if the situation calls for, will be locked in the AV room with a phone (ext. 4922), computer, and walkie-talkies. If you are missing any students, inform the office via of the student s name and last known location. ie. restroom, library, etc. An announcement will end the Lock-Down. If there is a substitute in your grade level, you will need to let them know when we are finished with the Lock-down as they do not have .

6 CHERRY CREST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EMERGENCIES: STEPS TO TAKE STAFF PROCEDURES SUDDEN STUDENT OR STAFF DEATH Sudden deaths of either students or staff are an unfortunate reality for any school community. Whatever the circumstances surrounding the death, the greater school community is affected and must respond to the after effects of sudden death. KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER 1. The main goal is to assist the affected student(s) or staff, and be understanding of their feelings. 2. The building principal or his/her designee is the only spokesperson when dealing with the press or outside people. 3. Affected students should never be left alone. When an affected student needs to leave the classroom, teachers need to remember to send a buddy along with the student. 4. Accurate information should be continuously made available to everyone. Any reliable information should be shared with the administration for dispersal. Please remember that speculation could cause rumors. 5. Empathetic listening can be our greatest resource at this time. 6. It is appropriate to let students know that this emergency affects you. 7. Remain alert for signs of students who are having serious difficulty coping. Report this information to a counselor, nurse, or administrator. 8. Parent/guardian should encourage upset students to come to school rather than stay home alone. Parent/guardian should inform the counseling center regarding the upset student.

7 EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROCEDURES MAINTENANCE STAFF PROCEDURES (custodial & food workers) Fire Alarm Report to the Main Office; locate where the alarm was triggered. Go to the area in question to evaluate destruction/intensity of blaze. If fire is burning out of control, wait for fire department assistance before entering area. If it is a false alarm, report it to the Main Office for "all clear" Signal. Earthquake Before: During: After: Assist the planning committee &/or administrator in the identification of non-structural hazards. With direction from Damage Assessment Team &/or administrator, assist in the reduction of nonstructural hazards. Maintain inventory of food supplies. Become familiar with procedures & locations for turning off utilities. Drop, Cover, & Hold at first sign of earthquake. Hold onto furniture if furniture moves. If outside, move away from buildings. Check utilities & do whatever necessary to minimize further danger. Determine which utilities still work & which do not. Report findings to the COMMAND POST. Make a note of structural & non-structural damage when checking utilities. Report any identified damage to the COMMAND POST. Assist in evacuation, if one is required. Set up emergency sanitation system or procedures. Be sure not to use water or toilets until lines have been checked for breakage. Use emergency water supplies (including water from hot water heaters, etc.). Lock-Down Move quickly to the cafeteria (multipurpose) room Gather any students or staff and direct them into the cafeteria Lock all doors leading into the cafeteria building

8 Incident Commander Paula McPhee In-Charge Oversees needs and issues related to staff and students. Work closely with Operations Leader Approve all information before release by Public Information Officer. Report to school district on status of students & campus. Begin student release when appropriate. No student should be released until student accounting is complete. Never send students home before end of regular school day unless directed by Superintendent, except upon request of parent/guardian. Remain in charge of your campus until redirected or released by Superintendent. Command Post Identifying vest, communication tools & disaster plan.

10 Security/Damage Assessment James Akook, Will Cronk, and Vlad Gerasimov Reports to : Operations Leader Keeping evacuated areas clear of students/staff Maintain order & security of evacuation site Assess damaged campus structures for the potential of further structural collapse Inform incident Commander of areas identified as SAFE. (light damage) Command Post Identifying vest, clipboard, pencil & school grid map. Hard Hat, Gloves, Goggles,

11 Search & Rescue Martin Cordell Reports to : Operations Leader To search for any injured staff or students, in any area designated as SAFE. Command Post Identifying vest, clipboard, pencil & school grid map, Multi-Casualty First Aid Kit, Tool Kit. Hard Hat, Gloves, Goggles

12 First-Aid Jennifer Cordell and Chris Houden Reports to : Operations Leader Organize & setup first aid treatment area at evacuation site Triage injured Care for injured Establish type of treatment needed: Immediate & Delayed. Keep & file records for reference. Do NOT send records with victim. Designate morgue area. First-aid treatment area at end of the field on the grass Medical Officer pack, identifying vest, First Aid Supplies. Office supplies for documentation.
