Nomi s Approach A holistic program approach to empowering and creating a financially independent future for survivors and women at risk of human trafficking

Letter From Supei Dear friends of Nomi Network, It is an honor to present to you a comprehensive view of Nomi s programs and method. This program booklet is the result of listening, learning, working intimately with our beneficiaries, rigorous self-evaluating, knowing and accepting failures, and overcoming challenges. It comes from our experience derived from the personal learning process of nearly one decade of working with survivors of human trafficking, women at risk, their families, and communities. Inspired by a young survivor of human trafficking we met in Cambodia in 2008, my two co-founders, Diana Mao, Alissa Moore-Williams, and I came to believe that an important and effective way to end modern day slavery is by addressing some of the economic issues that cause individuals to make poor decisions, fall prey to exploitation, and become the victims of human trafficking. As we learned, economic depravity is just one of the many issues women, young girls and children face in the communities where we work that are underdeveloped and at high-risk of being trafficking. Gender inequality, violence towards women, high illiteracy rates, and lack of support systems are just some of many social issues our participants face daily. As we embarked on the journey of teaching and training Nomi Network s participants in both rural India and the capital city of Cambodia, we have learned that life skills and technical skills trainings are just one aspect of the holistic approach necessary to fulfill our vision of ensuring that every woman knows her full potential. Nomi s Approach is a comprehensive development program methodology that partners with NGOs (Non- Government Organizations), manufacturers, retailers, industry leaders, governments, and communities by transforming individuals, their family, and their local communities to create lasting impact. Nomi s Approach addresses change in three areas: 1. Community: While working in rural areas, it is often not just the lack of infrastructure, education, and skills building we have to overcome, but also cultural mindsets, ignorance, gender inequality, and social stigmas. To address these issues, we must work with the individuals, families and communities closely, which is why we adopt the following strategy: - Deploy Nomi s Foundation Training Program - Create Partnership with Local NGOs 2. Employment: The outcome of the Foundation Program is to prepare our participants for job placement and give them the confidence to be excellent employees. As a result, they gain financial independence and are able to support themselves and their children. We accomplish this by executing the following: - Placement via Nomi s Job Creation Network - Partnerships with the Private Sector & Technical Training Centers 3. Leadership & Capacity Building: As individuals become a part of the workforce, it is just the beginning of tapping into his or her potential. As a result, we adapted the next phase of the program to focus on developing workplace leaders and helping those who have shown high potential to build even greater capacity in garment manufacturing and the fashion retail industry. This takes place via: - Nomi Network Fashion Incubator - Partnerships with the Private Sector As one organization, Nomi Network can only be as good as our own efforts and expertise, but when we all come together as a network, each stakeholder focuses on its individual strength; the private sector focuses on creating jobs, the social sector focuses on providing the social and training support, and the government sector focuses on policy making that encourages businesses to set up in rural areas and the social sector to execute capacity building activities. In recent years, I have seen all three sectors come together through Nomi Network s Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Initiative. As we deepen our impact locally, we look forward to expanding our reach with new and existing partners in 2018 and beyond. Sincerely yours, Supei Liu VP of Global Initiatives/Co-Founder Nomi Network

Where We Exist We currently have programs in Bihar, India and Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In Bihar, we have created a Foundational Program designed specifically for rural communities. In Phnom Penh, we have taken a more urban approach by setting up the Nomi Network Fashion Incubator that focuses on leadership and capacity building via our partnerships with the private and social sector. In the program section, we will further explain our approach to working in these two very different environments. Nomi Network Workforce Development Program The Workforce Development Program is Nomi Network s rural-based program which focuses on working directly with survivors, women, young girls, and their communities. Methodology Holistic approach Empowerment through financial independence and gaining self confidence Establish new community and support systems Promote team character building and partnership

Offerings Workforce Development Program 1. Foundation Training Foundation training is designed to empower and equip survivors and the most vulnerable women and girls in rural areas to prepare to transition into jobs, self-employment, higher education or become more confident. Foundation Training is the bedrock of the whole Foundation Program as well as the cornerstone of Nomi s Approach. There are four components of the Foundation Training: Foundation Phase I (FPI) focuses on building life skills as most Nomi participants come from abusive situations and are illiterate and lack formal education. Equipping them to be strong and confident so that they can face their own doubts as well as their family s and community disapproval is critical. They experience this as they learn basic hygiene, time management, and communication skills necessary in today s work-place. Foundation Phase II (FPII) focuses on technical skills while strengthening their character through team building, reinforcing a commitment to overcoming culture barriers. Foundation Phase III (FPIII) focuses on job transitions in an actual work setting. Participants continue to refine their technical skills while receiving both technical as well as social and emotional support onsite. Train The Trainer (T3) focuses on identifying graduates from FPI and FPII with leadership potential. T3 training teaches and equips them to be the trainer of future FPI and FPII participants. These trainers also often become Agents of Change in their own communities as they become more confident and financially independent. Training Facility: Nomi deploys Foundation Training at Nomi s own training center in Bihar. In 2018, Nomi will launch Nomi Institute in Bihar to equip other like-minded NGOs and social enterprises that are interested in learning and adopting Nomi Network Workforce Development Program and deploying it in their own communities. 2. Job Placement & Follow Up Once participants complete the Foundation Training, they are eligible to be employed by Nomi s private sector partners. Some graduates have generated self-employment opportunities, starting their own tailoring shops, butcher shops, or other small micro enterprises Nomi Network has identified at the community level. The majority choose to be employed by Nomi Network India s social enterprise production center. As we expand, we plan to increase our private sector placements for graduates and ensure both themselves and their families adjust to their new lifestyle through regular follow up consultancies. Foundation Training & Train the Trainer (T3) Job Creation Phase 1 3 Months -Tech 20% -Life 80% Phase 2 4 Months -Tech 70% -Life 30% Phase 3 5 Months Transition Job Manufacture SME Become a Trainer T3 Social Enterprise

3.Partner Networks The success of the Foundation Program contributes greatly to Nomi s amazing network in the following areas: Community: direct partnerships with community either through Nomi s own training center or partner s facilities. Local NGO partners: expansion takes partnership and we understand that local NGOs are the best at grassroots efforts to reach new communities. 4.Community Development & Support Nomi Network s Foundation Program provides a holistic approach to our participants and the community we work closely with. Nomi participants empowerment process is often a journey of physical and emotional recovery as well as the recovery of their children and family. To ensure lasting transformation, we also support them in the following area: Legal Council Scholarships Counseling Child Health and Nutrition Savings & Loans Group Private Sector: without partnerships with the private sector, large scale job creation would not be possible. Government Sector: support from local and central government is essential to the program success. Government policy shapes private sector investment strategies, legal measures, law enforcement. We engage in dialogue to infuse government policy. Workforce Development Program Communities Local NGOS Government Government Technical Training Center Manufacturers Manufacturers SME Social Enterprises Manufacture Phase 1 3 Months -Tech 20% -Life 80% Phase 2 4 Months -Tech 70% -Life 30% Phase 3 5 Months Transition Job SME Become a Trainer T3 Social Enterprise Community Economic & Workforce Development

Why Nomi s Foundational Program Renu was painfully shy, nervous, and cautious of everything when she first joined Nomi Network s program in Bihar, India. She comes from the Scheduled Caste otherwise known as the untouchable caste, which has been economically and socially marginalized and systematically oppressed generation after generation. Never given the opportunity to attend school, Renu was married off by her family to a mentally ill man at the tender age of 13. Along with adolescence came motherhood and a rocky marriage riddled with financial problems and domestic violence. At Nomi Network, Renu experienced encouragement, safety, empowerment, and training in life and technical skills. For the first time she learned how to read and write, open a bank account, save money, get a government issued ID, and gained skills in sewing. Renu slowly began to smile more, laugh out loud, share her opinion and show interest in learning new things. Eventually, due to her massive transformation and progress, she was chosen along with three others to become a Nomi Network Trainer. Thanks to her new job as a Master Trainer, Renu increased her earnings and savings and was able to build a new home for her family. In 2016, Nomi Network opened an office in Kishanganj, 110 km from our main site in Forbesganj. With a new cohort of trainees from the local red-light district, experienced trainers were needed and Renu accepted the position of Master Trainer. Renu was met with resistance and skepticism from her family about traveling far for work, since traditional social stigmas tell women not to work outside of the home. Even still, Renu stood strong against the pressure and initial fear and persisted in her work. She now travels by bus to work every week and feels confident in her abilities to both commute and teach. Renu s newfound self-assurance is accompanied by a warm smile as she trains more women who are just like how she was, shy, nervous and cautious. Everyday Renu looks forward to seeing the changes in the lives of her trainees as they go through Nomi Network s program.

Nomi Network Fashion Incubator Nomi Network Fashion Incubator is our urban-based program which focuses on working with existing social service providers and enterprises to strengthen survivors reintegration, business growth, job creation, and market competitiveness. Methodology Focus on hands-on job readiness content, as most of our clients and partners are already in the workforce or business sector. Focus on bringing in industry professionals so that our course material and topics are current and relevant. Focus on problem solving and critical thinking so our trainees can take their learning and apply it to different and diverse situations. Learner and trainee driven.

Offerings Nomi Network Fashion Incubator Nomi International Fashion Training (NIFT) NIFT generates our most extensive and regular activities. Each year NIFT offers 12 different course modules, over 140 hours of training at our Incubator Center in Phnom Penh. The modules cover all aspects of fashion business including Market Access, Technical, Design, Logistic, Marketing, Finance/ Planning, and Personal Development. To maintain the highest training quality, NIFT has inhouse experienced international trainers as well as guest trainers from the fashion and manufacturing industry. NIFT also offers selected course modules in Siem Reap and plans to expand to more regions across Cambodia. we hosted Nomi Network Fashion Incubator s Launch Party in February and a Christmas Celebration in December where we created an intimate, inviting, and creative environment for participants to network, learn from each other, as well as engage in fun and creative activities. In June, our Incubator hosted the event Behind the Scenes of a Fashion Powerhouse with guest speakers from Macy s and Tactical 5.11, who shared industry trends and expertise, as well as their own journeys to success. Recently, we have added events that promote both local fair trade handicraft sales, as well as connect local and international buyers to producers. Coaching Coaching is Nomi Network s Fashion Incubator s newest initiative in We understand that sometimes our trainees and partners need more help than just the NIFT classes. Our experienced trainers provide onsite visits and coaching with clear monitoring and evaluation process in place. Market Access We currently work with and purchase from nine organizations that have demonstrated capacity or improvement in their production capability for the international market. We work closely with each organization every season to develop new, updated, and marketable products for international buyers. During each development process, Nomi Network Fashion Incubator s experienced merchandiser provides one-on-one market, business, pricing and quality control consultancy for each organization. This is one of the longest-standing services Nomi Network provides its partners, available since inception in Each year, we continue to expand and look for new organizations to be part of our production and supply chain network. Network Event Three times a year, we host events to bring likeminded people together to share ideas, learn from each other and celebrate ones successes. In 2016,

Why Nomi Network Fashion Incubator Vichara Pattern Maker Rajana Association My name is Vichara. Since my husband passed away in a traffic accident 16 years ago, I have been raising my son as a widow. For the last eight years, I have been working with Rajana Association as a sewer and pattern maker. I love [Nomi s] program, because it has helped me learn specific skills to build a long-term career, while supporting both myself, my son, and his future. One day, I hope to have my own business. Although I have many years of experience, I still faced a lot of problems with my production before NIFT such as: 1. I couldn t understand or read spec sheets, an industry sheet which provides detailed information on products from customers. Although I tried to interpret based on myexperience, the outcome often did not meet standards for quality. 2. Sometime my cut pieces did not match when I start sewing them. I had to adjust each piece and fix the problems as I went, taking up lots of time, and often still leaving the finished piece with problems. 3. I often faced quality control (QC) issues, as my finished products did not meet my expectations or the original sample from the customer. I would like to say a big thanks to my manager who gave me the opportunity to take NIFT classes. Through NIFT I have learned how to cut proper patterns, measure the body and garments properly, use industry standard tools, read spec sheets, check QC, and find inspiration to design new products. What surprised me most about NIFT training was when the trainer presented a similar spec sheet to a garment I have been receiving from customers; previously I didn t understand or know how to read it, but after just one day of training I can now understand and read it very well. I also learned the importance of tracking QC processes, and I am now more confident in knowing what I m doing is both accurate and meeting industry standards. I would like to say thank you to Nomi for providing this very important training to help me improve what I m doing and fulfill my career potential. I hope to attend more NIFT training soon, especially in T-shirt and trouser design, as well as other fashion items. Vich & Leak Entrepreneurs Carino This husband and wife team started their fashion endeavor more than 5 years ago. In the beginning, they focused on purchasing products from abroad and bringing them to Cambodia to sell. However, they faced many problems with their suppliers, like delays in shipments and quality issues. As those problems grew and became a bigger barrier for their business growth, they set out to find solutions. One day in 2014, a thought came to Leak s mind and she talked to her husband, Vich, about the possibility of making the products themselves. Leak started to attend basic sewing and pattern making training. Under the encouragement of her husband, Leak realized she had the talent and eye for making products that were right for their Khmer customers. Still, they both realized they needed more training to excel and grow their business. At the end of 2016, they met with a former colleague and asked if he knew of any good fashion design schools for them to attend. Immediately, he replied I just finished training with Nomi Network and I highly recommend you join because they have a professional trainer and designer to teach you. He shared that, They provide expert training skills and also have well known designers from the USA train from time to time. After hearing that, they researched Nomi and contacted staff to request more information. Since the beginning of 2017, Vich & Leak have been attending all of the NIFT training courses and have been committed to the entire semester. In one month, they applied everything they learned on their existing production and have seen a drastic improvement in their technical skills, production efficiency, creating patterns & spec sheets, and communication with their producers. Leak is now more confident in creating designs as well as patterns that are perfect for Cambodian customers. They have found that making their products in Cambodia is much better than buying them from abroad. They currently produce different styles of dresses with 10 full time staff at their shop Carino, located at AEON, a local mall. The demand for these dresses is already off the charts and more than what they can supply. I strongly hope with our new confidence and learning from Nomi, our customers will be happy and satisfied with the changes reflected in fit, style, and designs. Our dream is to build trust among our customers and brands through producing high quality products and new designs to respond to future fashion trends or movement in our local market. Nomi Network is not just a place that provides more design and training skills, but it provides the technical know-how from a garment industry standard. Now I consider Nomi as a home that can share and extend my network, Vich and Leak expressed. Nomi is not just a place that provides more designs and training skill but it applies the technical know how from a garment industry standard. Now I consider Nomi as a home that can share and extend more [a bigger] network. Vich and Leak said expressed.
