3 Israel s Largest Umbrella Organization for the High Tech and Life Science Industries Israel Advanced Technology Industries (IATI) is Israel s largest umbrella organization for companies, organizations, and individuals in the high tech and life science industries. In a country like Israel where innovation is a national mindset, IATI s mission is to strengthen these two industries across the whole value chain while creating global, technological and innovational leadership. The IATI researches, develops and advocates policies and actions that promote all of Israel's high tech, increasing awareness of its strengths and innovations worldwide. It creates a favorable environment for Israeli high tech and life science companies to innovate, develop, produce and deliver products that benefit society. Our members come from every level and aspect of the industry: entrepreneurs, start-ups, R&D centers of multi-national companies, local and international venture capital funds, private investors, tech-transfer companies, incubators, accelerators and service providers. What all members have in common is an interest in becoming global leaders in their field. By providing the platform for communication and collaboration, IATI gives its members not only the opportunities to learn from successful individuals but to also gain access to R&D, marketing, financial service providers, the world s top tier venture capital funds as well as other investors. In recognition of the social needs of Israel and in line with the social responsibilities undertaken by the high tech industry, the organization encourages its members to promote and develop the community in Israel through promoting the level of education in general, while emphasizing the education for inventive and creative thinking in particular. In addition our association endorses organizations that encourage the exposure of young people to technological advances and an entrepreneurial approach. 4 IATI Multinational Companies (MNC) Forum Current workgroups are: Education Work Group: This workgroup focuses on growing the engineering and technical capacity of hi-tech in Israel by taking actions that will increase the number and quality of students graduating from high-school and universities with a diploma in Engineering, Computing, Science & Math. Human Capital: HR Managers collaborate to address the hightech industry challenges as well as the unique issues of Israeli sites of Multi National Companies. Academic Collaboration Work Group: This workgroup is focused on expanding various aspects of MNC collaboration with academic institutions, including how to enable and simplify IP transfer and sharing, how to efficiently utilize academic expertise, exposing MNCs to academic research and vice versa, organizing joint events, etc. The IATI MNC Forum unites the leaders of the leading Multinational R&D centers in Israel to promote and advance common interests of these centers in Israel. There are many shared common interests and goals among the Multi-National Companies despite obvious competition. The IATI MNC Forum is the leading Forum, where the MNCs cooperate and collaborate in order to promote their joint objectives. IATI (Israel Advanced Technology Industries) is Israel s largest umbrella organization for the high tech and life science industries. In a country like Israel where innovation is a national mindset, IATI s mission is to represent and support the entire advanced technology "ecosystem in order to leverage its strengths and expand its network. The IATI MNC Forum is run by IATI and led by a Steering Team headed by Yoram Yaacovi of Microsoft. The Forum is comprised of and operates via various workgroups which convene quarterly. The MNC Forum meets every quarter in order to be updated on recent progress of the work group activities, to hear relevant guest speakers as well as networking & collaborative purposes. Government Collaboration Work Group: The Israeli government is aware that the hi-tech industry is a critical part of Israel s success. Thus, this workgroup reviews existing government programs and how to use them effectively (ex. employment grants for headcount growth). The workgroup also seeks opportunities to improve government processes and policies that will encourage additional investments of global companies in Israel. Positioning and Communications Work Group: The objective of this workgroup is to handle all communication aspects of the forum including press presence, get relevant information to members, track changes in the industry, and provide facts about Israel and the hi-tech ecosystem, including creating a presentation for the use of the members. Collaboration Work Group: This workgroup seeks opportunities for the MNCs in Israel to collaborate where competitive reasons do not prevent that from happening. 5 Welcome to the IATI 2015 Multinational R&D Annual Conference This unique conference gathers the world's largest advanced technology R&D Centers operating in Israel, presenting some of the most exciting developments in advanced technologies that are taking place in Israel today. Top-tier global companies are opening new R&D centers and investing in accelerator programs in Israel. This brings invaluable international expertise to Israel and strengthens the corporate culture, helping Israel to stay ahead of the game in the global technology sector in spite of its small size. The Israeli high-tech and life sciences industries continue to be Israel s main economic growth engines. Yet they currently face many challenges, among them: increasing competition, global economic slowdown and regulatory changes. We, at the Israel Advanced Technology Industries (IATI), Israel's largest umbrella organization for the high-tech and life sciences industries, continue to promote and support innovation, entrepreneurship and growth. IATI is committed to providing support for the hi-tech world at all levels, from start-ups to multinational players, and promoting industry-academia collaboration. We run collaborative seminars, workshops and webinars, and constantly create business development opportunities for startups and for the entire ecosystem. We have initiated and maintained a variety of active sector and subject-based committees. We have continuous dialogue with government officials about the needs and challenges of our industry. Our experience has taught us the value of committed partners and shared goals. The combined talent, brainpower, and entrepreneurial energy of our members holds enormous promise for our industries as well as for Israel. 6 I am very pleased to welcome you to the third Annual Conference of the IATI Multi-National Companies (MNC) Forum. Israel has the highest concentration of large multi-national companies per a square kilometer, and per capita. Many multi-national companies have recognized the unique skills of the Israeli engineers, and the innovation of the startup nation high-tech ecosystem, and this resulted in many such companies setting up their R&D centers in Israel. Whether through an acquisition of one or more companies, the move of a senior executive from the global company back to Israel, or a direct decision to open an R&D center here the result is the same Israeli engineers, developers, managers and other professionals working for large international corporations performing key R&D for the company. The MNC s became a significant segment of the Israeli hi-tech industry - currently there are about 250 global companies with 28,000 employees in Israel. 45% of R&D employees in Israel are employed by MNCs. As such, the MNC forum is an important part of the IATI. The Forum creates a unique opportunity for the managers of the R&D centers to interact, exchange ideas and best practices, and advance subjects and issues which are common to all of them. Being part of large corporations, these centers have the need and the bandwidth to take the strategic point-of-view, and long-term planning to make an impact on the high-tech industry in Israel, the education system and the government approach to high-tech. As such, talent and education are central to the MNCs and to their ability to continue to grow and bring value to their companies and to Israel. Today s conference is part of this strategy we will discuss the challenges we face in our efforts to stay competitive next to the world and the different relevant aspects-creating new talents through improving STEM education (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and including more sectors in the industry. The intent is to share with our guests and with each other the magnitude and the quality of the work being done here, and encourage synergies and collaboration where possible, adding even more value to the presence in Israel. Israel also has the largest number of NASDAQ listed companies outside North America. 9 The world around us is changing. Manufacturing, business models, marketing and finance all changing at a pace faster than ever. In this fast moving world the only way to "stay in the game" is to constantly adapt and innovate. There are few places in the world that can match Israel in the quality of innovation. This is the main reason that around 300 multi-national corporations (MNCs) are operating in Israel, taking a big part of the R&D activity in the "start-up nation". The MNCs are a crucial component in Israel's innovation ecosystem working in harmony with the investors, start-ups, SMEs, mature firms, academia and government to form one of the greatest hubs of innovation in the world. We all understand that despite the benefits of being a part of this ecosystem, the decision to operate here is not always easy. Our promise is that those who choose to do so will find a partner in the Israeli government. Indeed, the office of the chief scientist at the ministry of economy (OCS) has been a partner of the MNCs for more than 40 years. The OCS is currently in a midst of a strategic transformation to become the National Authority of Technological Innovation. The main goal of this transition is to better serve all parts of the ecosystems, including, of course the MNCs. We are certain that the fruitful cooperation we established over the years will continue to thrive in the future. 10 R&D in science, technology and space is a key lever for economic growth, increasing social resilience and strengthening Israel's standing in the international community. Over the years, Israel has managed to maintain its position in these areas, and has reached impressive and ground breaking achievements, including 8 Nobel Prize laureates in the fields of science, which helped improving the quality of life for mankind. These achievements are the fruit of investments made in Israel decades ago, and should not be taken for granted. In order to preserve Israel's position at the fore front of global technology we must continue to invest in and nurture the future generations, and make sure they are taught the fundamental disciplines in science and technology, including mathematics and physics. To make this happen, we must think time and again and continue asking ourselves how we can attract children and teenagers to study science and to pursue it as their career later on in their future lives. Unfortunately, in recent years we have witnessed a decline in government investments that are directed to areas of science, technology, R&D and scientific education among children and youth. Recently we could perceive the first signs ofa beginning of change in this trend. It is not without reason that the vision of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Space is "to be a leading factor in advancing the state of Israel in the fields of science, technology and space as a lever for economic growth, increasing social resilience and strengthening its international position". One of the main goals of the Ministry is to makescience more accessible to the community and encouraging excellence in science and technology. And indeed, the Ministry of Science operates on many levels and runs numerous programs, both for students and youth in the framework of informal education and also for students and researchers in institutions of higher education, which implement the vision and goals of the ministry, for the sake of the future of the State of Israel.
