1 PHOTONICS AND MICROSYSTEMS TECHNOLOGIES in the Berlin-Brandenburg Capital Region photonics
2 Photonics and microsystems technologies in Berlin-Brandenburg An ideal location with optimal conditions Tradition and innovation Photonics has a long tradition in Berlin and Brandenburg: At the beginning of the last century, Siemens, Osram and AEG transformed Berlin into the City of Lights. The first machines designed for the industrial manufacturing of optical lenses were developed in the Brandenburg town of Rathenow. The region is home to world-renowned research institutes and innovative companies that supply products in global demand. Photonics and microsystems technologies are key fields in the capital region and their ongoing development is an essential component in the innovation policies pursued by the states of Berlin and Brandenburg. The cross-border photonics cluster was established in 2011 for exactly this reason. It provides ideal conditions for the targeted and effective support of these technologies. The photonics cluster in numbers The spectrum of photonics and microsystems technologies in Berlin-Brandenburg ranges from optical sensors to lightsensitive polymers and from systems integration to lighting design. Around 390 companies are active in this industry in the capital region. They employ a workforce of approximately 14,400 individuals with an additional 2,200 scientists performing research in the field at 36 university-level and non-university institutes. The photonics industry has grown on average by eight percent each year since Know-how from Berlin- Brandenburg is valued throughout the world: Regional companies generate two thirds of their turnover abroad. Focal areas Berlin and Brandenburg are known worldwide for their top-quality photonics. The laser diodes developed by the Mirror system of a pulsed high-power laser amplifier at the Max Born Institute in Berlin Adlershof The German capital region: At the intersection of the European high-speed network Lisbon 2,900 km Dublin London 1,485 km 1,020 km Madrid 2,500 km Paris 1,090 km Amsterdam 550 km Oslo 1,110 km Berlin Potsdam Brussels 770 km Prague 360 km Bern 900 km Rome 1,500 km Copenhagen 460 km Vienna 670 km Stockholm 1,100 km Warsaw 620 km Budapest 880 km Helsinki 1,420 km Tallinn 1,270 km Riga 980 km Vilnius 1,000 km Bucharest 1,340 km Athens 2,650 km Ferdinand-Braun-Institut are in high global demand, as are the high-end components for optical data transmission created by the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute or various other innovative optical tools for medical diagnostics and treatment. The Berlin-Brandenburg photonics cluster already holds a leading position in the six fields of activity below, and each field will be specifically promoted in the future: Optical communications technology Laser technology Light technology Photonics in biomedicine and pharmacy Optical measuring and sensor technology Microsystems technologies Short distances better access One of the region s unique strengths is the close proximity of its actors. A number of successful companies are spin-offs of universities, universities of applied sciences and research institutes. Many innovative products are developed and marketed in cooperation with scientific institutes and companies. The distances to political decision makers are also very short. Berlin is Germany s national capital and home to major chambers and associations. It is the city in which the framework for economic activity is designed. No other location makes it possible to form networks as easily and efficiently as the Berlin-Brandenburg capital region. Moscow 1,750 km Minsk 1,070 km Kiev 1,660 km Istanbul 2,193 km

5 Photonics and microsystems technologies in Berlin-Brandenburg Science, locations, companies, networks Science and industry Close proximity helps to ensure maximum synergy: There are a number of locations in the capital region in which science and industry flourish next to each other in a dense and productive space. For example, Berlin Adlershof is home to roughly 100 companies and research institutes active in the fields of photonics and microsystems technologies. Leading researchers at the Potsdam Golm science park work side-by-side with young and innovative companies. The proximity to Technische Universität Berlin makes the Berlin Charlottenburg district a magnet for tech companies, and many start-ups establish operations close to universities and research institutes in the region. The tech and innovation parks in the Berlin Humboldthain and Schöneweide districts are two further examples of this trend. Several companies have also located near the Teltow canal in southern Berlin. And, finally, the Brandenburg city of Rathenow boasts a century-long tradition of excellence in photonics and remains one of the industry s most prominent locations in Germany. World-class research Ten regional universities and 26 non-university institutes perform research in photonics and microsystems technologies. Roughly 2,200 scientists work at these institutes and more than 40 study programs educate the skilled talent of tomorrow. Among the most prominent members of the scientific community are world-renowned institutes such as the Max Born Institute, the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin and the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM). Links to business and industry are traditionally close and very productive, as demonstrated by the large number of collaborations and joint development projects. Microsystems and Materials Center (ZMM) in Berlin Adlershof Substrate integration line for production-oriented research at the Fraunhofer IZM in Berlin Wedding Young and mobile In addition to large-scale companies, which include such leaders as Osram, Berliner Glas and Nokia Siemens Networks, the region is characterized primarily by small and mobile young actors with high potential for innovation. Examples include SHF and u²t Photonics in the field of components for rapid optical communication, Sentech and LayTec in the optical control of solar cell manufacturing, Highyag and Scansonic in laser systems for material processing, AcriTec and Oculentis in the development of intraocular lenses, AEMtec and Finetech in micro-optic systems and art photonics and FFC FibreCableConnect in fiber optics. Optic networks Strong regional networks foster productive channels of communication among scientists, companies and political decision makers. They also encourage the sharing of expertise and provide ongoing training to the industry s workforce. OpTecBB, for example, is a regional network of expertise and member of OptecNet Germany, the association that brings together all national optical technology networks. It provides contacts to scientific institutes, organizes industry events and joint trade fair appearances and advises political bodies and economic developers. Other specialist networks include Laserverbund Berlin-Brandenburg and Photonik BB for laser technology, photonics, measuring and sensor technology. The optic alliance brandenburg berlin (OABB) focuses on opthalmic and traditional optics. The TSB Technologie stiftung Berlin is the key contact for all questions relating to technology and innovation in Berlin and the capital region. All of these organizations help to ensure that new participants in Berlin-Brandenburg are quickly and effectively integrated.
6 Berlin-Brandenburg capital region Location advantages, facts and services Where investment makes sense Berlin-Brandenburg offers the best funding conditions in Europe. Investment assistance comes in the form of direct subsidies. Funding programs pool resources from the EU, the federal government and the Berlin and Brandenburg states. Large companies in the capital region currently receive up to 30 percent in investment subsidies, medium-sized companies up to 40 percent and small companies up to 50 percent. Potsdamer Platz in Berlin High quality of life The region uniquely combines Berlin s international metropolitan flair with Brandenburg s fascinating countryside and historical places of interest. A nightlife like no other, renowned large-scale events, more than 300 museums, 200 performance venues and around 500 palaces and parks all these add up to an irresistible location. The region also offers unlimited sporting and leisure activities such as golf, horse riding, water sports and flying. Living costs, infrastructure and leisure activities are considerably cheaper than in other comparable metropolitan regions.
