17 Ireland s underlying strengths According to the World Bank s Ease of Doing Business Index Ireland ranks 15th out of 185 economies in terms of ease of doing business, making it the highest ranked euro area country, and the 4 th highest ranked country in the European Union. According to the IMD World Competitiveness Report Ireland is. 1 st for openness to foreign investors 1 st for investment incentives (attractive to foreign investors) 1 st for flexibility and adaptability of workforce 1 st for attitudes towards globalisation 2 nd for unit labour costs in manufacturing sector (% change) 3 rd for availability of skilled labour 4 th for labour productivity 6 th for percentage of population with 3rd level education

19 Start 1,000 (approx.) started with EI and LEO support 183 new businesses established with our financial support 102 were HPSUs 137 entrepreneurs honed their business ideas on the New Frontiers programme 11 new businesses spun-out from third level 10 mobile entrepreneurship projects won for Ireland 43 new businesses were established by ambitious business women, 18 of them were HPSUs Significant progress on transition of CEBs to LEOs LEOs First stop shop and key to Enterprise eco-system Commenced work on Regional Enterprise Strategies LEO

20 Innovate We continued to shape and develop Ireland s research capabilities to meet business needs by: Driving the highest level of collaborations ever (871) between Irish companies and Irish Higher Education Institutes Helping Ireland to achieve the highest success rate in Europe under Horizon 2020 (in the first results under the SME funding instrument) Launching Knowledge Transfer Ireland First ever national Innovation Showcase Helping 25 Irish companies secure 8.5m in contracts with the European Space Agency delivering sophisticated technologies and products

24 EI Initiatives on Tech Skills A shortage of tech skills is ongoing challenge for tech sector 600 indigenous companies delivering double digit growth Access to top tech talent crucial to maintain growth/jobs Web portal - It s happening here.ie Social media campaign to attract software professionals Single website portal to attract international technical talent EI input to Springboard and ICT Conversion courses

25 Manufacturing Innovative manufacturing companies in sectors such as Lifesciences, Engineering, Cleantech and Electronics make a significant contribution to economic growth and job creation Skills shortages facing manufacturing industry Precision engineering Programme developed in conjunction with Limerick IOT Similar efforts to bring together companies involved in: - Metal Fabrication - Tool and Mould making - Mechanical and electrical assembly Technology Centres around the country to assist the growth of manufacturing industry

26 Summary strategy for 2015 in relation to skills: Continue to identify the skills requirement of EI clients Influence the supply of skills at both regional and national level Work with companies to develop a culture of building sustainable formal and informal relationships with their local colleges, as is done successfully by German Mittelstand companies Continue to assist companies with issues in relation to Visas/Work Permits Ensure companies are aware of government employment programmes to enable them to access potential employees off the Live Register
