1 Heritage Manager, Llanthony Secunda Priory Information for applicants 1 Overview Llanthony Secunda Priory Trust are looking for an enterprising and creative Heritage Manager to deliver an ambitious Activity Plan as part of an HLF funded project to restore key buildings, see the site brought back to life and build a long term future. For the right person this is an unparalleled opportunity to make a significant difference to a long overlooked and under-appreciated heritage site located in the regeneration area of Gloucester docks. The Trust is looking for an entrepreneurial individual with strategic foresight, strong organisational skills, experience and understanding of the cultural sector and a passion for engaging people of all ages with history and heritage. The Heritage Manager will work closely with the Project Manager, particularly during the capital phase of the works, but will be the only person directly employed by the Trust. The intention is that the post will continue after the project funding finishes. The long term sustainability will depend on the Heritage Manager balancing strong community engagement activities with the need to generate income from the site. Closing date: 3 rd October 5pm. 2 The Project 2.1 The Trust Llanthony Secunda Priory Trust (LSPT) was formed in late 2007 to manage, restore and preserve Llanthony Secunda Priory. Gloucester City Council had owned the site since 1974 but had failed to find a solution. LSPT was established to "make a difference". During the past seven years the Trust has raised over 500,000 from grant giving trusts to fund emergency repairs and conservation measures on the most seriously at risk areas. Company registration No ; Charity No Registered Office ; Llanthony Secunda Priory Trust, c/o Miss E Griffiths Daw Cottage, 5 Gloucester Street, Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, GL12 7DN Telephone ; e mail info@llanthonysecunda.org
2 LSPT comprises up to 12 trustees with wide ranging experience. All of the Trustees are unpaid volunteers who are very enthusiastic and single minded in their ambitions to protect and celebrate the heritage at Llanthony. The current trustees are: Jeremy Williamson (Chair) Liz Griffiths (Secretary and Acting Treasurer) Sir Henry Elwes Sarah Gilbert Graham Howell Ian Patton Phil Staddon Ian Stainburn Patrick Taylor Paul Toleman Martyn White 2.2 The HLF funded Reformation Project Llanthony Secunda Priory is a site of national historic, cultural and archaeological significance located a short walk from the centre of historic Gloucester, surrounded by 21st century waterside regeneration. This project will comprehensively repair and conserve two of the six Grade 1 listed structures, developing sustainable uses for the main buildings and the entire site, while interpreting the 900 year story of this long misunderstood, hidden site. The project will: Provide on-site external and internal Interpretation covering the religious, social and historic importance, with links to its dispersed library of manuscripts. Develop the landscape and animate the site with events and activities. Provide educational and cultural multi-use facilities in the Brick Range and the Medieval Range, shared with Gloucestershire College, providing the basis for full financial sustainability. Repair and conserve the site's key heritage assets. Connect the site with local communities and surrounding city regeneration. The site is a unique heritage asset, containing a collection of six Grade 1 listed buildings, the legacy of one of the most influential religious houses in the Country. Llanthony s heritage is much more than a collection of old relic LSPT Heritage Manager info for applicants 8Sep16 Information for applicantspage 2 of 9
3 buildings, structures and buried archaeology. Its story has long been hidden away and neglected but provides a fascinating and rich source of knowledge. Llanthony tells the stories of turmoil and uprising in Wales; religious persecution and the quest for sanctuary; the power, wealth and influence of religious houses and figures in shaping our nation; the Crown and Royal visits; Dissolution, agrarian revolution, the English Civil War and the Siege of Gloucester, through to the Industrial age, neglect and despoliation and the miracle of Llanthony s survival today. Our project is about continuing this heritage story and defining Llanthony s role today in a regenerating modern city and writing its future story - bringing it to life for communities and future generations. Whilst we recognise that Llanthony s audience was very underdeveloped when the Trust was founded, its heritage is already important to a wide range of audiences and stakeholders at different spatial levels: Local Level Young People (recreation and education) - the site provides a much used green space for students from the immediately adjacent Gloucestershire College. Local Residents the site lies in Gloucestershire s most deprived ward (worst 10% nationally). City Level Representing the city's wider population of over 120,000, the City Council undertook extensive public consultation to inform its corporate plan. A key strategic priority is to make Gloucester a 'World Class Historic Destination'. Llanthony is one of the city s prime heritage assets and represents a significant and deliverable regeneration project. The Council's strategic regeneration framework for identifies Llanthony as a priority project. Even in its current poor state, Llanthony is one of the city s key attractions on Gloucester's annual Heritage Open Days. It is one of Gloucester's most significant heritage sites. The site is also recognised at a city level, through planning policies, as an important open space (in an area poorly provided with green space) and has formal recognition for its value as a site of nature conservation interest (SNCI). The site is important as an outdoor venue within the city, with good transport links, for cultural, social and performing arts events which have included theatre, cinema, music events, public meetings, historic re-enactments and a recent stone masons festival held in conjunction with the City's Tall Ships festival. Regional Level At a regional level Llanthony is important to people, communities, academics and specialist groups as it had an integral role in the history of the region from the early 12th century. 4 to 90 manors, farms and churches in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, South Wales and as far afield as Bedfordshire, Hampshire and Ireland (detailed list in supporting documentation). National and International Levels. The Grade I listings and the Scheduled site status underline the national importance of safeguarding and protecting this site for future generations. Historic England have been great supporters of the site. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh have visited the site and been briefed on the project and the site has been visited by the Minister for Heritage. The recent improved knowledge of the existence of the medieval Llanthony manuscripts is clearly important to national and international audiences. 2.3 The Activity Plan The Activity Plan contains a wide range of activities; these have been grouped into work packages as follows: Package A B C D E F G Descriptions All activities during the works Site clearance, public talks, hard hat tours, talks to groups off and on-site Setup activities Recruit (and induct) Heritage Manager, setup office, develop volunteer recruitment and management.
