Presents the Sharon & Dolph von Arx $100,000 Program Underwring Match Challenge!
From the Board Chair, Mary S. Smith: Naples Historical Society is delighted to honor Sharon and Dolph von Arx, community-minded and long-admired citizens of Naples, at this year s Christmas Gala at Historic Palm Cottage. We hope you will honor them with your presence! To capture history insures the preservation of our community's soul. Sharon & Dolph von Arx 2015 Gala Honorary Chairs 2
Dear Naples Historical Society Gala Guest, Member, Friend and Neighbor: Thank you for taking the time to review Naples Historical Society s Program Underwriting Match Opportunities. Which program speaks to you? Which has the community impact or return on your investment you want? Which Society program do you want to see move forward and make a better mark in the community? Whatever your investment, know that Mr. & Mrs. Dolph von Arx will match it dollar for dollar, up to $100,000! Give a gift to suit your needs and preferences, and fulfill it now, at the Gala, or over time. Your gift will be 100% tax-deductible and will contribute to the legacy of a well-functioning organization that is committed to preserving the history and heritage of Naples. With your authorization, your name may appear on the donor Naming Board (or increase its existing size) as well as in our programming materials for one year. If you prefer to support the Society exclusively by attending the Gala or through your membership support, please know your presence is still a present. Thank you, to everyone, for your consideration. Naples Historical Society, Inc. Board of Directors, The following programs are presented in random order. 3
Guests tour Naples Historical Society s Historic Palm Cottage. 4
von Arx Match Challenge #1: Educational Tours & Experiences What is the Need? The Society crafted several clever educational programs to create an awareness of and interest in Naples history. This range of programs enables us to reach visitors, residents, and the corporate community. The community cannot rise to the occasion if they do not know about Naples history and how important its preservation is to the fabric of our population and culture. In an ever-growing, ever-changing market, these programs are a backbone to our overarching effort to preserve what we can. 1. Historic Palm Cottage Tours 5. Full Moon Tours 2. Guided Garden Tours 6. Christmas at Palm Cottage 3. Naples Historic District Walking Tours 7. Welcome to Naples! Corporate Tours 4. Private Group Tours 8. Speaker s Bureau: Talk of the Town! Our work needs the community to believe in the value of preservation and share our vision, and the following impacts are evidence of that. History has become an ever-present conversation in Naples. What is the Community Impact? The great majority of visitors to Historic Palm Cottage rate our tours at 96% : Very Good or Excellent. The Society realized a 56% increase in membership over last year; residents & visitors want to see success. Requests for speaking engagements increased five-fold over last year alone. Tours of the Cottage have increased 26% over last year. We have respected collaborations with Leadership Collier, Greater Naples Leadership, County Historical Research Center, Naples Botanical Garden, Collier County Museums, Collier County School District, and many more. What are the Dollars and Sense? We serve over 15,000 people per year with an annual investment of $47,000 or $3/visitor. A gift of $47,000 will help us serve all 15,000 visitors to the Cottage next year! A gift of $15,000 will help us serve 5,000 visitors to the Cottage. A gift of $5,000 will help us serve almost 1,700 visitors. A gift of $1,000 will help us serve 330 visitors. Any gift amount is greatly appreciated! 5
Not an actual photograph. This altered image demonstrates what we cannot allow to happen in the future. 6
von Arx Match Challenge #2: Naples Historic District Initiative This substantial effort seeks to create a set of reasonable guidelines that steer restoration and re-build efforts for residential structures within the Naples Historic District. This is a complex initiative, and so a recap or in-depth presentation is available to any Society supporter at any time. What is the Need? Continued work to refine the project is needed, including the fine-tuning of a compelling set of incentives, careful consideration of a review mechanism, and a comprehensive Public Information Program. District Boundaries (roughly): Third Street South to the Gulf, and 9 th Avenue S. to 13 th Ave. S. A 17-member District Advisory Roundtable was created in 2013 and includes many VIPs in the community. This, we believe, was an early first step toward fostering community support. What is the Community Impact? Many current and prospective City Council members have been briefed on this project. It appears that the project is gaining solid support, but nothing can move forward without additional investment or charitable support from the community. With an estimated annual investment of $40,000, we will take this initiative to the next level. What are the Dollars and Sense? It Takes a Community to Preserve One! A gift of $40,000 would greatly relieve Mary Smith who has exclusively funded this project for 3.5 years. Any gift amount is greatly appreciated! 7
The Council of Longtime Friends reviews the Society s archives to help identify each photo: who, what, where, when, why, etc. 8
von Arx Match Challenge #3: Archival Development Project What is the Need? The Society s archives are rich with information about yesteryear. The Central Voice of Naples History, we seek to collect even more documents, photos, and artifacts. The proper collecting, identifying, cataloging, storing, interpreting, sharing and reporting of these valuable pieces of information takes time and space. Building a repository, then storing and showcasing these items for our visitors can only happen with help from the community. NOTE: Our system is backed up in New Zealand, England, and in the U.S.A. The Society has processed almost 30,000 pieces of information, photos, documents, newspaper clippings, artifacts, and more over the last three years. That means: What is the Community Impact? more is made available for the community s perusal, enjoyment and information. The community will have a trusted organization for stewarding and sharing precious educational material into the future. Our Archival Manager has undergone two years of seminars with the Florida Association of Museums, rendering an organizational legacy of properly stewarded material and standard operating procedures. Every document, photo and artifact is processed and catalogued following the best practices of the American Alliance of Museum Standards. What are the Dollars and Sense? With 30,000 entrusted items in our capable hands, we manage this with an annual investment of $30,000 or $1/artifact. A gift of $30,000 will help ensure the proper care of that in our possession and that to come. A gift of $15,000 will convince the next archival materials donor that we have what it takes to do our job! A gift of $5,000 will help us with the endless need for archival storage, both electronic and physical. A gift of any amount is greatly appreciated! 9
Children studying Florida history get a lesson on Naples history they enter as a student and leave as a Pupil at Palm Cottage! 10
von Arx Match Challenge #4: Pupils at Palm Cottage Field Trips History isn t only for the mature audience! Pupils at Palm Cottage is an educational program tailored for 4 th -5 th grade elementary students in Collier County who are studying Florida history. What is the Need? We believe providing tours to young people is an effective way to instill a greater appreciation for the community in which they live. Students who participate in this program learn to compare and contrast the past, present and future. The ensuing in-classroom discussions inspire young minds to think critically. This is an invaluable component in life. Every year, 2,000 children learn about Naples history through a Pupils at Palm Cottage field trip. What is the Community Impact? Thirty-eight percent, 38%, of these Pupils are from Title I schools, many of whom we have learned have never seen the Gulf of Mexico or the Naples Pier. Children who attend museums learn to compare and contrast the past, present and future. What a great way to inspire a child to think critically, ultimately to do well in this world. Help us foster intellectual growth through this School District-endorsed collaboration. With unprecedented growth, the Pupils program now serves 2,000 elementary children each year with an annual investment of $28,000 or $14/child. A gift of $28,000 will allow us to inspire 2,000 more children next year. What are the Dollars and Sense? A gift of $15,000 will allow us to inspire 1,100 children this year. A gift of $5,000 will allow us to inspire more than 400 children. A gift of $2,500 will help us with yellow bus transportation next year, the only way students can attend this free field trip. Any gift amount is greatly appreciated! 11
Pioneers and friends of the Society, l-r, seated: Betty van Arsdale, Merle Harris, Thelma Hodges, Mary Watkins, Mary (Prince Evans) Lipstate, and l-r, standing: Charles Marshall, Richard Tooke, Marta Keene, Chester Keene. 12
von Arx Match Challenge #5: Oral History Filmings The Society captures on film important slices of life that tell of Naples past as a way to preserve the story according to our community s old timers. What is the Need? There may be other efforts in the county to capture these important stories, but no program in the area makes the recordings available so easily! This project is integrally connected to the Archival Viewing Center (formerly the Guest House) where films and archival photos are available to our guests and visitors year-round. What is the Community Impact? Thus far, the personal stories of almost 45 pioneers have been captured on film. We have a long list of other pioneers or family members to secure, too. The oral history project kick-off promotion increased Collier County resident visits by over 305%. This means the community is interested and wants to know more! A full list of filmed oral histories is available on our website. Here is just a sample... Willie Anthony Jackie Sloan Duke Turner Ben Parks Mary Watkins David Weeks We reach out to over 10 pioneers every year, successfully recording 4 annually with an annual investment of $12,000 or $3,000 per pioneer. What are the Dollars and Sense? A gift of $15,000 will help us film 5 pioneers next year. A gift of $10,000 will help us film 3 pioneers. A gift of $3,000 will help us film 1 pioneer. Any gift amount is greatly appreciated! 13
Garden Side Chickee Chat (Jeff Lytle, presenting). 14
von Arx Match Challenge #6: Garden Side Chickee Chats Garden Side Chickee Chats refer to our annual lecture series held in The Norris Gardens at Palm Cottage. What is the Need? The Society realized that educational programs entail something in addition to tours of Palm Cottage, so the first Chat was created and delivered to a group of 18 people in It s been a great ride since! This is an important value-added benefit to the member dollar, and we believe that we should stay on track with producing intellectually engaging programs year after year we need your help to do that. Member surveys indicate that the community is knowledgeable about Naples history, and they want to know even more. What is the Community Impact? Our member retention rate is partially attributed to our popular Chickee Chats. We know this program adds tremendous value to the membership dollar...the show must go on! The Garden Side Chickee Chat programs have increased 3,000% in attendance!! (from 18 people in 2009 to over 550 in 2015.) The Society s Garden Side Chickee Chats are one of our most robust educational programs for both Members and residents alike. Education is a key component in creating awareness of preservation. Our annual investment in this popular program is $30,000, or $10,000 per Chickee Chat. What are the Dollars and Sense? A gift of $30,000 would ensure a solid run for Chickee Chats next year. A gift of $10,000 would get the show started. A gift of $5,000 would help to set the stage. A gift of $1,000 would help to produce our flyers and marketing materials. Any gift amount is greatly appreciated! 15
Phase I Endowment Goal: $5,000,000 Historic Palm Cottage, then and now Broad Avenue South, then and now... 16
Mary S. Smith Endowment Match Challenge What is the Need? Mary S. Smith sees the lack of program funding as a potentially chronic fiscal disaster. A fulfilled Endowment will permit disbursements to help fund the Society s programs and operations into the future. The Phase I Endowment Goal is $5,000,000, and we are half-way there! Thanks go to Dr. & Mrs. Michael Kubly and to Mr. & Mrs. Alfred H. Shotwell, III, for their remarkable support. We also deeply appreciate the generous gifts from several others...all of whom are listed on our Naming Board already. With a little more help, we ll make it. Compare where we were to where we are now the Society s good work is worth your support! What is the Community Impact? An organizational Impact Statement is available upon request. Ask Mary Smith any question about the Society, its programs and plans in person she is the Chair of the Board not only because she is helping the Society through her philanthropic leadership, but because she knows and understands the opportunity to help and the need at hand. Mary Smith will match all gifts to the Endowment, big and small, 1 to 1, up to $700,000 through June, What are the Dollars and Sense? There are no recommended increments; give as you can and know it will help for a lifetime. 17

Brick & Mortar Supporter The Society has a Capital Maintenance plan for both Historic Palm Cottage and 107 Broad Avenue South that extends to That means we know what costs to expect, barring an unforeseen disaster. Your help is needed for the next improvement projects for Historic Palm Cottage, slated for : What is the Need? 1. Inspect and reroof the Cottage (the last re-roof on the Cottage was in 2003), 2. Inspect and repaint exterior, strip and sand all exterior wood work, 3. Inspect, repair windows, awnings, and doors, fences, gates etc., 4. Inspect, repair or replace Shutter system for Windows and doors, 5. Rat-proofing (We like visitors, but not this sort.), 6. Seal fireplace, 7. Refinish all wood floors, 8. Repaint complete interior, 9. Refinish all stained wood work, 10. Kitchen cabinets and counters replace with more fitting original systems, and 11. Inspect and replace HVAC equipment if necessary. What is the Community Impact? Showcasing Historic Palm Cottage is the best way to demonstrate preservation in action. The Cottage has never looked better, but, our list of capital improvements remains long. As devoted caretakers of Naples oldest house (1895), we ask for your help with capital improvements, in 2017 and beyond. The need for Planned Capital Improvements in is $56,000. What are the Dollars and Sense? Consider that a $2,800 porch screen repair project turned into a $36,000 front porch restoration project (Historic Palm Cottage). Unforeseen capital projects must be addressed, and for that we rely on the goodness of the philanthropic community. A gift of $56,000 will address the most immediate need for the coming year. Any gift amount is greatly appreciated! 19
Mission: We are dedicated to preserving Naples history and heritage for the community and future generations to enjoy! We gratefully accept cash, checks, credit cards, gifts of appreciated stock, and your personal pledges. Thank you for your consideration! If you choose to make a gift now or at the Gala, we will be standing ready. If you prefer to make a gift later, we respect your choice and thank you, in advance. And, of course, if you prefer to support the Society exclusively by attending the Gala or through your membership support, please know your presence is still a present. Thank you for your consideration! Call Elaine Reed, President & CEO, for more information: Naples Historical Society, Inc. P.O. Box 201, Naples, FL The photo on the front cover was taken from the Pier facing east. It shows the old Naples Hotel at the end of a wooden boardwalk which was made with timbers on each side that served as rails for a small cart with flanged wheels. The boardwalk was used to transport baggage and supplies from the Pier to the Hotel. (c. 1906) Did you notice Naples Historical Society s Historic Palm Cottage on the left? 20
