13 Things to remember when submitting grants Call the grant administrators in Wash DC Invite them to visit your campus Must be easy to read quickly (not too crowded) Make it easy for panelists to find things quickly Abstract Most circulated part - more people read this part Budget Pages Realistic and within limits Justification for all line items Indirect, F&A (for your own company) Scientific merit first, budget last Timeline and Milestones Clear and realistic Facilities and Institutional Support 13
14 Bad News? Don t take it personally Don t let some reviewer comments affect your future plans Got thick skin? Rebut respectfully. Do not attack previous reviewers. Keep resubmitting as many times as allowed Write a new application Your batting average will be better than those of Tony Gwynn and Ted Williams William G. Tong 14
15 Novel ideas Risky vs. Revolutionary vs. Leapfrog advantages vs. Digging new holes vs. Routine Evolutionary Incremental improvements Filling someone else s holes Discuss your ideas with colleagues you trust Your hot idea might be routinely available elsewhere Things to remember when submitting grants Get yourself invited to review proposals for federal agencies Get to know big defense contractors (Lockheed Martin, SAIC) Will need them to get big DoD grants, e.g., DARPA Or build your own company (this is for another workshop) 15
