Your second harvest hero Fundraising toolkit SECONDHARVESTHERO.CA
YOUR IMPACT By running a fundraiser at your school, YOU are a HERO to people in your city experiencing food insecurity. Second Harvest needs the support of heroes like you to meet the growing demand for fresh, healthy food for people facing hunger in our communities. Here are some ways that you make a difference: $500 provides enough food for over 1,000 fresh, healthy meals $1,000 provides food for a warm, hearty lunches for 80 at-risk youth for an entire month $2,500 feeds a family of four for over a year $5,000 provides food for 500 students a year in afterschool nutrition programs $10,000 provides four classrooms of kids from low-income families with healthy lunches for an entire school year
YOUR IMPACT Rita and her young son attend a meal program at a Second Harvest partner agency several times a week. Even though she works full-time she often cannot afford groceries, especially good quality groceries, to last them the whole week. I hope to be able to get back on my feet, and be able to pay for all our household needs myself, but until then the meals we receive here are life savers. I don t know what my son and I would do without them.
How will you be a hero?
There are endless ways to fundraise for your Second Harvest Hero campaign. The key to a successful fundraiser is to choose an activity your school will love and that you can get excited about. 9 Food Rescue HEROES
FOOD RESCUE HEROES! LEADING THE FIGHT AGAINST FOOD WASTE IN YOUR SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY Second Harvest s annual fundraising campaign, Second Harvest Hero, has always been a great fundraising program for schools to take part in. This year, we have added a new activity for students that helps them reduce food waste at home and school and fundraise for their community: FOOD RESCUE CHALLENGE. Students who take part in the Food Rescue Challenge pledge to take action to reduce food waste at home and school while tracking their impact and collecting donations from friends and family. The Food Rescue Challenge works as an individual, class-wide, or school-wide activity and can last any length of time, one week, a month, or a whole semester. The Food Rescue Challenge works to satisfy the growing demand we see in schools for civic activities that promote engagement and action outside of the classroom, encouraging students to recognize and reduce food waste at home and in their community.
presentation
CLASSROOM PRESENTATION & BRAINSTORM Second Harvest would be happy to lead a presentation at your school or class on the impact of food waste and the ways we can each contribute to reducing waste and supporting food rescue. We also offer a presentation kit for teachers who wish to lead the presentation themselves. The presentation will be followed by a brainstorming activity in which students will identify the various ways they can reduce food waste in their home or school. Some topics that students and teachers can use to brainstorm ideas for food-saving are: Why shoppers choose perfect produce and how that can lead to waste; How portion sizes in restaurants and all-you-can-eat buffets contribute to wasted food; Whether changing how their families shop for groceries can have an impact; What food tends to get wasted in students homes? (Restaurant takeout? Leftovers? Forgotten food at the back of the fridge/freezer?)
How to fundraise
TAKING THE PLEDGE AND RAISING FUNDS THE PLEDGE Students will choose one or more of the food rescue methods they listed and pledge to use them to reduce food waste. They can choose to reduce food waste at home, school, in the community or in all of these places and choose the timeframe for their challenge from a week to a month, to the rest of the school year. TRACKING Students will be given a weekly planner to track the progress of their food rescue pledge. They will track food rescue tasks they complete and the impact their efforts have throughout the course of the Challenge. FUNDRAISING Along with their weekly sheet, students will receive a fundraising pledge sheet to record pledges and donations. Students can ask family and friends to sponsor them on their food rescue journey by donating to Second Harvest s food rescue program. Every dollar donated to Second Harvest provides 2 meals! Second Harvest can also provide online fundraising sites for schools or students who wish to receive online pledges and payments. Contact krisjohnk@secondharvest.ca to find out more or to register your school/class.
CONGRATULATIONS! CHALLENGE COMPLETED! WRAPPING UP YOUR CHALLENGE Following the end of the Challenge, students will submit their raised funds for collection and pledge trackers for teachers to sign. Teachers will identify if students have regularly filled in their tracker. Pledge sheets can be submitted to the school/classroom campaign lead and can contact Kris-John Kucharik x286 or to either arrange mailing details or a pick-up of campaign materials and funds. A signed pledge tracker indicates that the student has successfully fulfilled their pledge. RECOGNIZING HEROES Once all materials and raised funds are received by Second Harvest, students who have successfully completed their food rescue challenge will receive a congratulatory certificate recognizing them as a Food Rescue Hero! Student volunteers who help execute the campaign at their school will also receive a letter from Second Harvest recognizing their volunteer hours. MORE INFORMATION Want more information for the Food Rescue Hero program? Contact Kris-John Kucharik at x286 or krisjohnk@secondharvest.ca to find out more or to register your school/class.
