3 Keynote Speakers OPENING KEYNOTE Aaron K. Foley, a Detroit native, serves as the city s chief storyteller, a unique position in municipal government. In that position, it s his mission to create a platform where Detroiters can learn more about each other across both geographic and cultural boundaries. Prior to joining the City of Detroit, he was editor of BLAC Detroit magazine, and held positions at Ward s Automotive Group, MLive and the Lansing State Journal. He was also Detroit editor for the popular car blog Jalopnik, where readers took note of his point-blank, tell-it-like-it-is takes on the city. In 2015, Foley published his first book, How to Live in Detroit Without Being a Jackass, a social guidebook to living in the city. In 2017, he edited the anthology, The Detroit Neighborhood Guideboook. Foley has delivered a TED talk at Detroit s historic Fox Theatre, appeared in two documentaries about Detroit, traveled beyond Detroit to talk about Detroit, had work republished in a German textbook and has been a consultant or researcher on several Detroit projects, including a forthcoming Hollywood film on the 1967 riots. CLOSING KEYNOTE Dr. Natalie Stavas is an attending physician at Boston Children s Hospital and an instructor in pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. Her work focuses on improving the health of vulnerable children and decreasing youth violence. She is also an avid runner. On April 15, 2013, Stavas approached the finish line of her fifth Boston marathon. Just blocks away she heard explosions, ran toward the chaos and began administering first aid to the wounded. Following this experience, Improper Bostonian magazine named her one of Boston s Best and The Boston Globe awarded her with 2013 Bostonian of the Year, an honor bestowed upon those who shape the biggest story of the year in a remarkable way. Stavas has written for multiple outlets including the Huffington Post, the Centers for Disease Control, Self magazine and the Medical Bag. She has been featured in Runners World, The New York Times, LA Times, The Boston Globe, The New Yorker, Time and People Magazine. Stavas has also made appearances on the Katie Couric Show, CNN and ABC World News. 3

4 General Information REGISTRATION FEES The registration fee for this conference is $225 for FMCA members and $275 for nonmembers. This fee covers admission to all conference sessions, continental breakfast, refreshment breaks, the Friday Meet & Greet and Saturday s Networking Luncheon. No official activities are scheduled for guests or spouses. On-site registration fee will increase to $275 for members and $325 for non-members. All participants are encouraged to register online. Conference confirmations include your registration information, totals and registration number for your reference. Please check your confirmation carefully to verify that all information is correct. All refunds will be processed after the conference, minus a $50 administrative fee. There will be no refunds for no shows or cancellations after November 5. Rooms are available for meeting participants at the special rate of $145 per night, single or double. There are no resort fees and guests will receive discounted self-parking. No telephone reservations will be accepted by the hotel at this time. You will be sent complete information on how to make reservations with your paid registration confirmation. Note: To protect our room block for conference registrants, it is our policy that no one will receive housing instructions until we have received your paid registration. We are unable to guarantee reservations for anyone, nor the exact date on which the hotel will sell out, so please register early! 4
