2 HEAD COACH TONY VITTORIO Tony Vittorio Head Coach 14th Season Overall ( ) Seventh Season at UD ( ) Hanover (1988) University of Dayton head coach Tony Vittorio has solidified himself as one of the baseball program s greatest managers since he took over beginning with the 2000 season. This claim is backed by a resume that includes three 30-win seasons, a school record 36 victories in 2005 and UD s only three trips to the Atlantic 10 Championship. However, Vittorio ( , at UD) would give many reasons why those numbers represent a starting point rather than a destination for a program that had only one winning season in the decade prior to his arrival. If you strive for excellence everyday, you might find perfection along the way, Vittorio said. Vittorio led Dayton to a program record 596 hits in 2005 while ranking second in runs scored (397) and at bats (1,932), third in batting average (.308) and RBI (358). The 2005 Flyers also had a solid pitching staff with 314 strkeouts (third most in school history) and a 4.41 team ERA (fifth best) which included 12th round draft pick Craig Stammen. UD also won two of three games against #19 Notre Dame on Feb. 26 & 27 in Mesa, AZ at HoHoKam Park, the Spring Training home of the Chicago Cubs. It marked the highest ranked team ever defeated by the Flyers in school history. But as bright as the future appears for Vittorio s Flyers, his past still stands at the top of UD s record books. In 2002, UD shattered record after record, boasting school-highs in strikeouts (332) while winning 32 games, and an April 16 win over IPFW that gave Vittorio his 300th career victory. His ability to mold professional-caliber players was also validated during the year, with four members of the 02 squad going on to play some type of professional ball. The quartet of players moving on to the next level brought his total to five players in three years. A year earlier, Vittorio guided Dayton to its first winning season in three years, setting a then single season school record for victories with 32, while leading Dayton to its first berth in post-season play since joining the A-10 in The 32-wins in 2001 was just the second winning season in three years, and gave promise to a program that had eclipsed the.500 mark just one time during the 1990s. This transformation of Dayton s program has come as no surprise. From the start of his 12-year coaching career as an assistant at Indiana University, Vittorio has been a builder. His first reconstruction was at Lincoln Trail Community College, a junior college in Robinson, IL. Taking over a program that suffered through a 2-48 season before he arrived, Vittorio guided LTCC to 145 wins from 1990 through 1994, including a record his final year. While coaching the Statesmen, he mentored two MLB draftees and saw 22 players advance to four-year college teams. He then spent two years as an assistant coach at the University of Kentucky before beginning the revival of Division II IPFW, a team that was 9-41 in Vittorio engineered his rebuilding process again and posted a mark his first season and an impressive record in Vittorio s Mastodons won 80 games in his three years in Fort Wayne and had two draft picks. In 2000, coach Vittorio made the move to UD, bringing with him assistant Todd Linklater. A native of Indianapolis, Vittorio graduated from Hanover (IN) College in 1988 with a double major in both business administration and physical education. He went on to earn his master s degree in sports management from the University of Kentucky in At Hanover, Vittorio was a four-year letterwinner as a middle infielder and was selected into the American College Hall of Fame at the conclusion of his collegiate career. Vittorio resides in Kettering with his wife Heather, their daughter Taylor Reann and son Nic. Career Record Year School Record Pct. Conf. Pct. Conf. 3 HEAD COACH TONY VITTORIO How would you describe the evolution of Dayton baseball from when you took over in 2000 to last year s school-record 36-win season? When we took the program over six years ago the team needed a boost. The addition of Time Warner Cable Stadium has been the biggest jump start to our program since I arrived. We now have a top notch recruiting tool in our facility, which is one of the best in the Midwest. We also play in a very competitive conference. Because of this, we are able to attract a quality baseball player. Overall, the commitment to our baseball program has greatly improved and last year the product on the field showed it. How rewarding was last year s 36-win season for you and the program? It was extremely rewarding for not only myself, but the rest of the coaching staff and the players to have most of the pieces fall into place last year. We have been building a strong program for a few years sticking to our core values and maintaining high standards both on the field and in the classroom. The support from the University and Dayton community are unmatched to any other team in the conference and have been key to our rise over the past few seasons. Now the challenge for our program is to build on the intensity and skill level from last season to accomplish our goal, which is an Atlantic 10 Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. What is your strategy for developing a player both on and off the field during his four years at UD? Can someone from UD make it to the next level? I think our development of our players is second to none. Our inseason and out-of-season workouts from a team standpoint and an individual standpoint are the strength of our program. My assistant coaches do an outstanding job with our players on an individual basis both on the playing field and with our strength and conditioning throughout the course of the year. I don t care if you are one of our best players or way down on the depth chart, we leave no one sitting in the corner. Through our preparation, we are going to make you the best you can be to possibly join the ranks of Jerry Blevins and Craig Stammen who were drafted in the past two seasons. What type of player fits best into your program at UD? Someone who obviously has the tools to play the game of baseball but also represents the core values of our program - hard work, loyalty, hustle, intensity, and sportsmanship. It is important that our players challenge themselves to be the best on the field, in the classroom and in the community. The Atlantic 10 Conference has become more competitive with the addition of two new teams and the start of a new scheduling model this season. How competitive is A-10 baseball? I feel like our conference continues to improve each and every year. With the addition of two teams in our conference this year, it is only common that it is going to be more competitive. We play in the largest baseball conference in the nation, which creates a diverse atmosphere when conference games begin as 14 teams all compete for the same goal. I would consider the A-10 as a very scrappy competitive conference where you have to tighten your shoes up for each and every team throughout the course of the schedule. I also feel that the switch to three nine-inning games this season will make for more dramatic finishes to games between evenly matched schools. Can you describe your theory of scheduling non-conference games? I feel that in non conference play that you should try to schedule teams that you might face in a regional but also play likeable competition to try to gain confidence going into conference play. We want to play the caliber of opponents that we would see in regional play. Last year, we played the likes of Notre Dame, Birmingham- Southern and Miami (Ohio). The team also benefits from playing in great ballparks such as last year s trip to Ho-Ho-Kam Park in Mesa, Arizona. This year, we will take on teams from the Big Ten, BIG EAST, ACC and the MAC while still playing a competitive, 27-game Atlantic 10 Conference schedule. How has the addition of Time Warner Cable Stadium helped UD become a winning program? The addition of Time Warner Cable Stadium definitely raises the bar of expectations for Flyer baseball. This is definitely a welcomed expectation as we have been able to recruit at a whole different level. It is very humbling to be able to have such a nice stadium which I feel is at the very top of the list from a recruiting tool standpoint. Not only is it a great playing surface in a wonderful setting, but the indoor hitting/pitching facility and locker room are great assets to our program. Time Warner Cable Stadium will be the home of a great atmosphere for baseball for years to come thanks to the support of the Dayton community and the hard work of our players Dayton Baseball 35 35

4 ASSISTANT COACH TODD LINKLATER Todd Linklater Assistant Coach Seventh Season at UD Lake Forest (1996) Todd Linklater began as an assistant at the University of Dayton in At UD, Linklater is Coach Vittorio s full-time top assistant. He serves as the pitching coach and player development coordinator. He also plays a major role in the recruiting and scheduling processes. Todd is my right-hand man, head coach Tony Vittorio says of his longtime assistant. Not only does he have the two key ingredients to be successful-loyalty and hard work-but he is also one of the best pitching/ strength and conditioning coaches around. Since coming to UD, Linklater s pitchers have made a habit of recordsetting performances. In UD s school-record 36-win season of 2005, the Flyer pitching staff had the lowest team ERA in 34 years with a 4.41 mark. The righthanded duo of Luke Trubee and th round draft pick Craig Stammen each recorded the top two UDsingle-season marks for both strikeouts and innings pitched. In 2004, Jerry Blevins finished with a 7-3 record and a 3.79 ERA before being drafted by the Chicago Cubs organization and moving on to be the Northwest League Pitcher of the Year. In 2003, UD s pitching staff recorded 301 strikeouts-the second highest single season mark in UD s 100 year history, bested only by the 332 put up by the 2002 squad. During 02 (in addition to the strikeout record) Dayton reached the then-record 32-win mark for a second consecutive season in large part to a pitching staff that featured four pitchers that would go on to play professionally after their tenure under Coach Link. The quartet was highlighted by seniors Mike Kerins, who collected eight wins, tying him for the career wins mark of 19, and Sam Fischer, who would later be selected in the 22nd round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Houston Astros. Kerins joined Linklater pupils Mike Rolih (who formerly held the single-season win mark and was named to the A-10 s All-Conference squad in 2001) and Aaron Pahs (who was a second-team All-Conference performer in 2002) on the roster of the Frontier League s Richmond Roosters. In all, Linklater has coached six players to professional careers. Linklater came to UD after two years as an assisant coach under Vittorio at IPFW. He served as the Mastodons top assistant and handled all aspects of the game, including strength and conditioning responsibilities. Linklater began his collegiate playing career at Lincoln Trail Community College, pitching for Vittorio from He then transferred to Lake Forest College where he graduated with a degree in History in In December of 2002, he finished his master s degree in Educational Leadership at UD after earning his bachelor s in Education at Indiana University in In the summer of 2003, beyond his responsibilities at Dayton, Linklater also served as the head coach of the Southern Ohio Copperheads of the Great Lakes Collegiate Wood Bat League. There, he led the Copperheads to a fifth-place finish in conference play and a return trip to the league tournament in just their second year of existence. His coaching career began at Lake Forest High School where he served as pitching coach from Linklater and his wife Kerry live in Kettering Dayton Baseball 36

We are excited about having Cory back at Dayton, Vittorio said. It is great to have a past Flyer with experience return to UD. Cory is a true baseball guy who loves to develop players. He is a great match for our program with his knowledge of the game and his loyalty to UD. Allen returns to Dayton from Olney Central College where he was a pitching coach since graduating from UD with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication in His Olney Central teams won 91 games over the past two seasons and won the Great Rivers Athletic Conference Championship in both 2004 and His teams broke six school records and had five players drafted. Also two of his Olney Central products (Bobby Getty and Galen Schumm) came to UD at the beginning of the 2005 season. The skills and morals that I was taught at Dayton have remained with me since my playing days, Allen said. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to give back to players what I learned in my days at UD. Allen also began his collegiate playing career at Olney Central where he pitched for two seasons. He was named to the All-Conference team as a freshman in 1999 and tallied 12 career wins and a.310 batting average for Olney before transferring to Dayton. 8 2005 REVIEW The Dayton Flyer baseball team enjoyed its best season in its 100-year program history in 2005 as it took two of three games from a ranked opponent, dedicated their newly completed stadium, won a school-record 36 games and advanced to the Atlantic 10 Championships in its own hometown for the school s third-ever trip to the A-10 postseason. UD opened the year with wins in three of its first five games before heading to Mesa, Arizona for a three-game series with #19/20 Notre Dame at Ho-Ho-Kam Park, the spring training home of the Chicago Cubs. While the Flyers appeared to be outmatched in the opener of the series and lost 10-2, UD came back to take the series with wins in each of the next two games. In the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday, UD rallied from behind for a 13-9 victory in 11 innings with eight of their 13 runs coming from the ninth inning on. Trailing 9-7 entering the ninth, the Flyers sent the game into extra innings by scoring two runs off All-American Irish closer Ryan Doherty. After the teams traded runs in the 10th, UD erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth and rode the solid pitching of Kyle Lindsay who recorded four strikeouts over three innings for a 13-9 victory. In the rubber game of the series on Sunday, Dayton came from behind for the second straight game to beat Notre Dame, UD, who snapped an 11-game losing streak to ND a day earlier, pounded out 17 hits on the day including a 4-for-6 performance by Joe McSoley. The sophomore team captain had two doubles to go along with a run scored and three RBI on the day for Dayton. Freshman Jeff Mercer picked up his first two collegiate RBI with a single through a drawn in Irish infield to put the Flyers ahead for good. Senior Kaleb Thompson earned the win in relief for Dayton. Thompson was the scheduled starter for UD, but came out of the bullpen after feeling ill earlier in the day. The lefty allowed three earned runs on eight hits while striking out one and walking just one over 4.0 innings pitched. JC transfer Craig Rohren earned his first save as a Flyer after coming on in the ninth inning and fanning a batter before inducing a game-ending double play. The Flyers would be forced to start the season with 14 games away from home over a four-week span before playing host to Marshall in the first game ever in the newly completed Time Warner Cable Stadium. Junior Craig Stammen started the day by striking out the first MU batter en route to a three-up, threedown first inning and an 8-1 Flyer victory that also saw sophomore Bobby Getty smack the first ever inside-the-park home run in the Stadium s history as part of a three-hit performance. Two weeks later, UD pulled off the biggest comeback in program history against Butler at Time Warner Cable Stadium. Down by 14 runs midway through the third inning, Dayton rallied for a dramatic win. Eight different Flyers had at least one hit in the comeback while Getty, Michael Massa and Bryan Chandler tallied three hits each as UD scored once in the third, four in the fourth, 10 in the seventh and six in the eighth for its 11th victory in 13 games. The Flyers finished the 2005 season with an 18-4 record at its newly completed home park including seven straight wins to close out the season. Dayton also dedicated the stadium in front of over 800 fans during its Atlantic 10 series-opening doubleheader with Duquesne that also marked the first two televised home games in Dayton history. Dayton closed out its regular season with a three-game sweep of Richmond at home to tie the program record for victories in a season for the third time in five years. The reward for the Flyers was a chance to stay in Dayton for the Atlantic 10 Championships, which were hosted Downtown at Fifth Third Field, the home of the Dayton Dragons. After opening ceremonies that included UD Head Men s Basketball Coach Brian Gregory throwing out the ceremonial first pitch, Dayton played in the opening game of the Tourna Dayton Baseball 40

9 2005 REVIEW ment and rallied from a five-run deficit to earn its first Atlantic 10 Tournament win in school history, 8-5 over Duquesne in front of 1,259 fans. The win lifted UD to a school best record of and put the fourth-seeded Flyers into the second day of the tournament against top-seed Rhode Island. "The first two years we went to the [A-10] Tournament, we had never been there so I think we spun our wheels just trying to get there. This team's been a lot different," said UD coach Tony Vittorio. I have a lot of confidence in this group. We have a pretty talented team." Dayton out hit Duquesne with the big blast coming off the bat of senior Aaron Hepner in the fourth inning, a three-run homer down the left field line. After the Flyers fell to Rhode Island 7-4 on the second day of the Tournament, UD returned that evening to beat Duquesne again, this time by a 13-9 score. Chandler collected three RBI for the second time on the day as he finished 1-for-5 with a run scored in a 14-hit Flyer attack against the Dukes. Four UD players had multi-hit evenings including William Benoit who was 3-for-5 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI. Getty was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI while Hepner was also 2-for-5 with a run scored. Massa singled twice and scored twice for Dayton. UD s season came to an end the next day with a 4-2 loss to George Washington and Dayton closed out its best season ever with a record. The Flyer offense recorded a program record 596 hits in 2005 while ranking second in runs scored (397) and at bats (1,932), third in batting average (.308) and RBI (358). The 2005 Flyers also had a solid pitching staff with 314 strkeouts (third most in school history) and a 4.41 team ERA (fifth best). That staff also saw Stammen drafted in the 12th round by the Washington Nationals, which was the highest ever Flyer draft pick in Vittorio s tenure. Stammen then began his professional career with the Vermont Expos. The 2005 season also saw five Flyers earn Atlantic 10 Postseason accolades as Schumm led the way with First Team honors at second base. Massa and Trubee earned A-10 Second Team honors as shortstop and starting pitcher respectively. Trubee also joined Stammen on the Atlantic 10 All-Academic team. Chandler and Brandon Godzik were honored for their play in the final weekend of the season by being named to the A-10 All-Championship Team Dayton Baseball 41 41

20 ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men s basketballonly affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10. The University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Temple University, and Xavier University have formed the foundation of the Atlantic 10 - a foundation which is further strengthened this season with the additions of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Saint Louis University. In , the Atlantic 10 Conference celebrates it s 30th anniversary season. Although anniversaries are a good time to reflect, this anniversary is a celebration of the future as much as the past. "It is with pride that we look back at our accomplishments and see how far this league has truly come," says A-10 commissioner Linda Bruno, who begins her 12th season at the helm of the league - the longest tenure of any commissioner in the Conference s history. "More importantly, however, the additions of Charlotte and Saint Louis ensure that the future is brighter than it has ever been. We are adding two members who will greatly enhance the national profile of all our sports and expose our programs to two new markets in which our universities actively recruit. The A-10 has never been as strong as it is now." The Atlantic 10 Conference, which spans eight states and the District of Columbia with a total population of almost 73 million people, will crown champions in 21 sports this season: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball. The genesis of this tradition of success can be traced to March 2, 1975, when eight university representatives met in Harrisburg, PA, to discuss the formation of a new collegiate basketball association. A similar meeting was also held on May 23 of that year, with the final formation of the Eastern Collegiate Basketball League announced on August 13, The NCAA granted allied affiliation status upon the ECBL on October 15, 1975, and granted the league an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament on June 17, The ECBL began operation at the start of the season with Duquesne, George Washington, Massachusetts, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Villanova, and West Virginia as its charter members. Several changes happened quickly in the ECBL, the first coming in when the league changed its name to the Eastern Athletic Association - better known as the Eastern 8 - to reflect its changing mission. That year, the Eastern 8 became more than a basketball league as the men's sports of baseball, cross country, golf, swimming, and tennis were added Linda Bruno Atlantic 10 Conference 230 South Broad Street Suite 1700 Philadelphia, PA (215) Fax: (215) Commissioner... Molly Rallo to the championship schedule. The next major change came in 1981 when the office of the commissioner was instituted. Leland Byrd, who had served as president and executive director of the league since its inception, as well as athletic director at West Virginia, was named the Conference's first commissioner and established the commissioner's office in Pittsburgh. Byrd guided the Eastern 8 through several membership changes as Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph's, and Temple replaced Pittsburgh and Villanova. After membership stabilized, the Eastern 8 transformed into the Atlantic 10 Conference with Byrd orchestrating the drive to make the league more broad-based as the women's sports of basketball, gymnastics, softball, tennis, and volleyball were added to the championship slate. In May 1984, Byrd resigned as commissioner and was replaced by Charlie Theokas, who remained at the Atlantic 10 for 15 and a half months, bringing the league to national consciousness with his "Think Atlantic 10" campaign. On December 31, 1985, Theokas resigned to accept the athletic director's position at Temple and was replaced by Ron Bertovich, who officially assumed the commissioner's position in May 1986 after serving as interim commissioner following Theokas' departure. In eight years as commissioner, Bertovich expanded the Conference staff to better meet the growing needs of the membership and established the Atlantic 10 Television Network, which has developed into a major regional outlet and has won three Emmy Awards. In addition, he oversaw further membership changes as Xavier was added to the league while Penn State, Rutgers, and West Virginia departed. Furthermore, he continued the league's emphasis on broad-based programs as the Atlantic 10 expanded its championship list with the additions of women's cross country, field hockey, men's and women's soccer, women's swimming & diving, and men's and women's indoor track & field, as well as the reinstitution of men's swimming & diving. On April 13, 1994, Bertovich resigned his position to accept the job of vice president and general manager of Empire Sports Network in Buffalo. On June 14, 1994, Linda Bruno was officially introduced as the Atlantic 10's fourth commissioner. As commissioner, Bruno has strengthened the Atlantic 10's membership with the additions of Charlotte, Dayton, Fordham, La Salle, Richmond, and Saint Louis. She also negotiated television deals with ESPN and was among the first to sign a contract with College Sports Television, which provides greater exposure for the Atlantic 10's athletic programs. Under her leadership, the Atlantic 10 has increased its championship schedule to 21 sports with the additions of women's rowing, men's and women's outdoor track & field, and women s lacrosse. In 1997, Bruno also spearheaded the league s entrance into Division I football with the formation of the Atlantic 10 Football Conference, which has won three national titles in its eight-year existence. In addition, in an effort to recognize the athletic and academic achievements of all studentathletes, Bruno instituted the Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 gpa or better Dayton Baseball 52 2/15/06, 8:11 AM

26 ADMINISTRATION Dr. Daniel J. Curran President Daniel J. Curran leads one of the top 10 Catholic universities in the United States and the largest independent university in Ohio. The Philadelphia native became the University of Dayton's 18th president and first lay leader on July 1, He's collaborating with administrators and faculty to craft Vision 2010: A Commitment to Excellence, a long-range strategic plan that will expand the University of Dayton's reputation as a Catholic leader in higher education, extend its reach globally and improve diversity on campus. Under Dr. Curran's leadership, the University of Dayton is enjoying tremendous momentum. For the past two years, UD attracted record applications for its first-year class and record sponsored research dollars. The University started new exchange programs in China, established centers of excellence in nanotechnology and fuels and combustion and opened a $22 million science center. In addition, UD constructed two facilities that combine living and learning Marianist Hall, a modern residence hall with learning spaces, and ArtStreet, an imaginative housing and arts education complex in the student neighborhood. RecPlex, a fitness and recreation complex, is expected to open in As a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I board of directors, he helped shape academic reforms designed to improve the graduation rate of student-athletes. He's currently serving on the NCAA s sports wagering task force. He has quickly immersed himself in the region, focusing on economic development and high-tech issues. He chairs the Wright Brothers Institute board and serves on nearly two dozen others, including the Dayton Development Coalition, Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, National Composite Center and Miami Valley Research Foundation. In the state, the governor tapped him for the Ohio Aerospace and Defense Advisory Council. Colleagues praise him for his collegial leadership style, vision, energy, approachability and strong commitment to social justice. A sociologist by training, Dr. Curran spent 23 years in various administrative and faculty positions at Saint Joseph s University in Philadelphia, most recently as executive vice president and vice president for academic affairs. He's a noted scholar in criminology, juvenile justice and social problems, with a deep interest in international issues. His passion for social justice runs deep. At his presidential installation ceremony in April 2003, he noted that a Catholic university must be "a force for social change. As a community of learners and educators, we must analyze the causes of social injustice and educate professionals with a conscience." He has served on the boards of Saint Joseph's Carpenter Society, a nonprofit organization that purchases and rehabilitates homes in Camden, N.J., and Philadelphia s Summerbridge Program, a college-prep program for minority middle-school students. For six years, he traveled with students to Tijuana, Mexico, on a service-learning project. He received the 2002 Eternal Flame Award, an international award given for "exceptional contribution to the field of Holocaust education." Most of Dr. Curran's research has focused on ways to address social inequality. His prolific scholarly record includes eight books, most of which he co-authored with his wife, Claire M. Renzetti, former chair of the sociology department at Saint Joseph s University. Theories of Crime: A Reader was published in 2003, and the two are working on updated editions of Women, Men and Society: The Sociology of Gender and Social Problems: Society in Crisis. In 1993, the University of Pittsburgh Press published his Dead Laws for Dead Men, a historical analysis of coal mine health and safety legislation. Before becoming a vice president at Saint Joseph s University, Dr. Curran served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for four years. He started his academic career there in 1979 with a series of faculty positions in the department of sociology, including chair from 1988 to As a professor of sociology, he has taught courses in criminology, social problems, juvenile justice and white-collar crime. Dr. Curran also served as president of the faculty senate at Saint Joseph's University. In 1990, he served as a Fulbright Senior Scholar at the University of Melbourne in Australia. He holds a concurrent professorship at Nanjing University in China. Dr. Curran earned a Ph.D. from the University of Delaware in 1980 after receiving a master's degree from Temple University in 1978 and a bachelor s degree from Saint Joseph s University in all in sociology. Dr. Curran and his wife, Claire, have two sons, Sean and Aidan. Ted Kissell Ted Kissell begins his 13th year as Vice President/Director of Athletics at the University of Dayton. Kissell s tenure at UD has seen the Athletics Division transform into a widely-successful broad-based program to keep in step with the changing trends in college athletics. As Kissell has implemented his strategic plan, championships have followed. In the last eight years ( ), UD has won 22 conference championships and seen 16 teams reach post-season. In the eight years prior to that ( ), the Flyers only had seven conference championships and one tournament appearance. Only the sixth AD in school history, Kissell is charged with the oversight of 17 intercollegiate athletics programs, the University of Dayton Arena and the surrounding Arena Sports Complex. As a University Vice President, Kissell serves on the University s President s Council and is a member of the President s Cabinet. Beyond the University, he is chair of Atlantic 10 Conference Finance Committee and a member of the A-10 Executive Committee. A vital component of the Flyer master plan is a men s basketball program that is in consistent contention for a post-season bid. The progress of the men s basketball program in the last seven years toward greater national prominence has been marked by three NCAA bids; three NIT bids and an average of more than 20 wins a season. Annual basketball-related revenues have risen from $1.8 million to $8.8 million since Kissell came to UD in The success of the men s basketball program has provided resources and allowed the operating budget to grow nearly $10 million to support Kissell s strategy of building broad-based competitive results throughout Flyer sports programs. Women s soccer has earned five NCAA tournament appearances including a berth in the Sweet Sixteen in 2001 and has won eight of the last nine A- 10 regular season championships. Women s volleyball has earned two consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and has won five A-10 titles (regular season and/or tournament). Men s soccer has won four A-10 titles, and baseball has raised the school record for wins in a season three times in the last five years. Kissell has also invested in UD football to maintain its position as the model for Division I non-scholarship football programs. A grass practice facility and charter flights have advanced UD s competitive position. UD football has gained nationwide attention with 28 consecutive winning seasons and won outright or shared the Pioneer Football League championship eight of the 12 years the league has been in existence. The Flyers also won the 2002 NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major National Championship. Strong performance on the field has not come at the expense of a high level of performance in the classroom. The Flyers combined cumulative grade point average has steadily risen to 3.14, the best in school history. UD has had 25 Academic All-Americans in the last five years. Only Nebraska, Rensselaer Poly and Rice had more. Dayton s 174 student-athletes on the Atlantic 10 Commissioner s Honor Roll were the third-most in the conference, even though the Flyers participate in fewer A-10 sports than all but one school. Providing strong, positive experiences and support for student-athletes is paramount in developing com- Vice President/Director of Athletics petitive athletic programs. During the last eight years, the Athletics Division has added full-time staff in the areas of academic support, strength and conditioning and athletic training. UD s student-athletes are also educated on the subjects of time management, better nutrition and even public speaking. Travel to away athletics contests has been upgraded across the board to provide the better accommodations and itineraries for athletes to be able to focus on academics while on the road and minimize the amount of class time missed. A high-water mark of Kissell s administration is the implementation of a gender equity plan that provides men and women student-athletes with equitable opportunities in line with the university s general population. A U.S. News & World Report ranks UD in the top 15 in Division I gender equity. Additionally, the Athletics Division has worked with the University to implement an aggressive program to increase minority opportunities for student-athletes. Kissell s plan also includes improved facilities. Development of the Arena Sports Complex (a 25-acre project in full view of I-75 and an attractive southern gateway to the city of Dayton) began with a $13 million renovation to the University of Dayton Arena, completed in Since then, the University has added a running track, the Jerry Von Mohr Football Practice Field, Time Warner Cable Stadium for baseball and a softball stadium that was completed for the 2005 season. The next ingredient will be the Courtyard By Marriott at the University of Dayton that will open during the school year. Along with the hotel, future plans include a restaurant, a multi-use field and farther down the Great Miami River, a boathouse for the rowing team Dayton Baseball 58 2/15/06, 8:11 AM

27 Tim Wabler Associate Vice President for Athletics Tim Wabler begins his 11th year in athletics at the University of Dayton. A former Flyer student-athlete himself, Wabler s primary duties include the administration of all of UD s sports programs and support services. In the decade Wabler has been part of the Dayton Athletics Division, the Flyers have experienced significantly improved competitive success. In the last eight years, UD has had 22 conference championships and 16 teams reach the postseason. In the eight years prior to that, the Flyers only had seven conference championships and one tournament appearance. The highlights include a fourth-place finish in the Atlantic 10 Commissioner s Cup (all-sport) standings, its bestever finish. In , three Flyer teams advanced to the NCAA tournament in the same school year, the very first time that happened in UD history. Women s soccer has won the A-10 Championship seven years in a row and advanced to NCAA play five of the past six years. Men s basketball has averaged more than 20 wins a season over the last six years. The volleyball team earned its first NCAA bid in 2003 by winning the A-10 Tournament, and returned to the tournament with another conference title in Men s cross country has won the national cross country only championship the last two times it has entered the meet. The baseball team has reached or surpassed the UD record for wins in a season three times in the last five seasons. And the Flyer football team has won the Pioneer Football League championship eight times in the 12-year history of the league. As success on the field has improved, UD student-athletes have also performed in the classroom. UD had the most players on the PFL Academic Honor Roll for the fourth straight year in Wabler managed the implementation of a gender equity plan that provides men and women student-athletes with equitable opportunities in line with the university s general population. A U.S. News & World Report ranks UD in the top 15 in Division I gender equity. Additionally, the Athletics Division has worked with the University to implement an aggressive program to increase minority opportunities for student-athletes. Wabler is overseeing the Athletics Division efforts to provide top-notch facilities for the next generation of Flyer student-athletes with the creation of the Arena Sports Complex. Development of the Arena Sports Complex began with a $13 million renovation to the University of Dayton Arena, completed in Since then, the University has added a running track, the Jerry Von Mohr Football Practice Field, Time Warner Cable Stadium for baseball and a softball stadium that was completed for the 2005 season. The next ingredient will be the Courtyard By Marriott at the University of Dayton that will open during the school year. Along with the hotel, future plans include a restaurant, a multi-use field and farther down the Great Miami River, a boathouse for the rowing team. Early in Wabler s tenure, the Athletics Division built the $4.3 million Donoher Basketball Center, an addition to the UD Arena, to provide new facilities for men s and women s basketball and football. The entire facility, which was dedicated in June of 1998, was conceived, planned and completed in 20 months time. In those 20 months, the entire $4.3 million cost was paid for by charitable gifts to the University. On campus, renovations to Baujan Field (soccer) and the Frericks Center (volleyball) have improved those facilities to among the best in the Midwest. Including the Arena Seating Plan, gifts to Athletics total over $4.5 million annually. Wabler, a Dayton native, is in charge of all coaches contracts for the Athletics Division, and manages radio and TV agreements. Wabler is also the administrator who oversees UD s athletic fundraising efforts and long-term finances. Radio and television agreements have been expanded to increase exposure for Flyer athletics. Dayton had a record 30 men's basketball games on television last year. Football and basketball games are heard internationally on the World Wide Web. UD women s basketball is also broadcast on News/Talk 1290 WHIO. In addition, Flyer basketball, football, volleyball and soccer games are broadcast in the Dayton area on Time Warner Cable. Wabler has been actively involved in numerous A-10 Conference committees, including the Championships Review Committee, Baseball Committee and Soccer Committee. A 1974 graduate of UD s School of Business Administration, Wabler has also completed the Sports Management Institute Executive Program. A former member of UD s Athletic Board, Wabler was a four-year letterwinner and three-time Pitcher of the Year for UD. He served as team captain as a senior.
