4 STUDENT PROJECTS Sarahann Mistretta. St. Lawrence University. The impacts of epibiont weight on mussel physiology: scope for growth Sam Foote. St. Lawrence University. Applying microsatellite analysis to determine distribution of Didemnum vexillum in Narragansett Bay Jessica Sarro and Danielle Astarita. Siena College. The impacts of epibiont weight on blue mussel valve movement and gonad index Jamie Heimroth. Siena College. The impact of zebra mussel epibionts on the filtration rate of unionid mussels Alison Majkut. Siena College. RESEARCH EXPERIENCE 2014 present. St. Lawrence University. Surveying distribution of Didemnum vexillum in Narragansett Bay and using microsatellite markers to learn about dispersal mechanisms. Determining physiological impact of epibiosis on native mussel species Siena College. Studied the impact of epibiosis on epibionts on mussel biology by looking at stress response and reproductive output. Supervised undergraduate projects on invasive epibiont impacts on native species. Collected data on blue mussel settlement and studied larval brooding period of invasive ascidians (with Lauren Stefaniak of University of Connecticut) Dissertation Research, University of New Hampshire. Investigated the effects of a native invasive tunicate Didemnum vexillum on the biology and ecology of the common blue mussel Mytilus edulis' biology and ecology. Utilized caging studies, predation experiments, histological techniques, and settlement panels to study growth, plasticity, predatory effects, reproduction, and settlement of the mussel when overgrown by the tunicate Visiting Scientist, Cawthron Institute, Nelson, New Zealand. Designed and implemented initial trial studies for dissertation study by measuring effects of tunicate overgrowth on Perna mussels. Photographed and characterized larval stages of Didemnum vexillum from preserved samples and trained a graduate student (Lauren Fletcher) on this method for her research project Masters Thesis Research, University of Rhode Island. Studied a novel invasive species in Narragansett Bay (Didemnum vexillum), focusing on the effects of physical and chemical factors on the species' distribution and abundance.
5 2006. Volunteer Scientist, NOAA R/V Albatross IV. Collected and preserved plankton samples from bongo nets during week-long ECOMON cruise. Aided in trial deployment and use of a Video Plankton Recorder Graduate Research Assistant, Marine Ecosystems Research Laboratory, University of Rhode Island. Processed, analyzed, and reported results on all chlorophyll a samples for MERL and for partner labs. Designed and maintained new laboratory website (still in use as of 2013). Worked as a team with other graduate students to complete C-14 primary production experiments, sample over 25 sites throughout Narragansett Bay as part of the EPA's National Coastal Assessment Program, and maintain data logs in the laboratory. Assisted in maintenance and deployment of YSI sondes.
