1 News Notes De La Salle Christian Brothers * 7650 S. County Line Road * Burr Ridge, IL August 2015 Mark Freund named Executive Director for Lasallian Education Mark Freund, a longtime school leader with Lasallian ties, has been selected as the next executive director of the Christian Brothers Conference Office for Lasallian Education. A lifelong Catholic and native of Baltimore, he currently serves as principal of Pope John Paul II High School in Boca Raton, Florida, a school that is in the process of becoming affiliated with the Lasallian mission through DENA. He brings more than 30 years of experience as a teacher and administrator in Catholic schools. Freund is a graduate of Calvert Hall College High School, a Lasallian school in Towson, Maryland. He holds a bachelor s degree from Towson University and a master s degree in education from Loyola University Maryland. As executive director, he will promote the Lasallian mission and assume a leadership role in representing Lasallian Education at the national and international levels. He will also oversee activities designed to serve ministries in the Lasallian Region of North America, including developing formation programs, fundraising, and representing the mission to the Catholic Church, to educational, civic, and governmental entities, and to business and philanthropic organizations. Sherri Kavanagh welcomed to Burr Ridge office In June Brother Larry Schatz announced that Sherri Kavanagh was selected to fill the position opened by the retirement of Cheryl Garrigan. The position description was changed in the process, and her new role will be Executive Assistant to the Provincial Team. Sherri had been the Athletics Secretary at Lewis University since January She started at Lewis in 2005, first in the College of Business and then moved to Purchasing in the Business Office. A native of Spring Valley, IL, she now lives in Joliet with her three cats and one turtle. She started on June 22nd, and her address is skavanagh@cbmidwest.org Welcome to the Burr Ridge office, Sherri!

2 Jubilarians were honored at Lewis celebration Eight Brothers were honored for the jubilees during a celebration on July 25 th at Lewis University during the annual District Day events. Fr. Thomas Botheroyd, pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Lombard, IL, presided at the afternoon liturgy, and a reception followed. This year s jubilarians included the following: 75 th Brother Terence McLaughlin; 60 th Brothers Charles Kelly, Martin Sellner, James Wegesin; 50 th Brothers John Blease, Michael Fehrenbach, Thomas Hetland, Christopher Oddo. These Brothers have given a combined 455 years of service to the Lasallian Mission and the church. Congratulations, Brothers! Five Brothers to Enter Novitiate On August 1 st five young Brothers from the Lasallian Region of North America (RELAN) will enter the Regional novitiate. The young men preparing to enter into this year of discernment are the following: from the Midwest District, Brothers Ryan Anderson, Johnathon Emanuelson and Michael Phipps; and from the District of San Francisco New Orleans, Brothers Javier Hansen and Joseph Wright. These Brothers have been in the postulancy for at least two years, have lived in community, have served in Lasallian ministries, and have attended retreats for Brothers in initial formation. This year the novitiate is newly located in Chicago s Hyde Park-Kenwood neighborhood in order to take advantage of the theological, inter-community and ministerial resources in the area. The novices will participate in an Inter-Community Novitiate program with about 30 other novices from men s and women s congregations as part of their year of spiritual development. Congratulations to Barry Lieske, AFSC, President of DeLaSalle High School, who has accepted the invitation to serve as one of three consultants to the Midwest District Council. He replaces John Vitek, President of Saint Mary s Press, who served for many years.

3 Brother Roderick Robertson, who was featured as a 2015 SMUMN Retiree in the Spring/Summer 2015 issue of Saint Mary s Magazine. Lasallian Volunteers presented awards The Lasallian Volunteers presented their 2015 FSC Awards at Lewis University on July 26 th at their sixth annual luncheon and awards presentation. Those honored included the following: Bassen Service Award to Tad Smith, Principal at San Miguel School Chicago; Johnston Faith Award to Brother James Gaffney, President of Lewis University; Johnston Faith Award to Brother Stephen Markham, most recently Director of Vocation Ministry; and Farrell Community Award to Brother Robert Walsh, newly appointed Director of the Casa Benedicta Community. The celebration included the recognition of Jolleen Wagner s service to the LVs. She recently resigned as the Director of the Lasallian Volunteers to start ministry in St. Louis with residence in the Peter Claver Community. Congratulations to all! Statue of Brother dedicated at Lewis University Lewis University dedicated a bronze statue, bench and plaque on June 26 th as a tribute to the more than one hundred Christian Brothers who have served on campus. The statue and bench are located between the east entrance to the Student Union and the west entrance to the Academic Building. The project was funded entirely by the generosity of the late James 60 and Mary Clare Sczepaniak. The statue was cast by free-lance artist Alec M. Smith of St. Paul, Minnesota. The installation included the statue and a semi-circular limestone bench with a bronze plaque that recognizes the Christian Brothers and the Sczepaniaks. The bench features an inscribed quotation from De La Salle: To touch the hearts of your students is the greatest miracle you can perform. The lifesized bronze statue shows a seated Brother holding a book inscribed with the Lasallian star. Brother James Gaffney honored in Phillipines De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, one of the largest Lasallian universities in the world, presented an honorary doctorate to Brother James Gaffney, President of Lewis University on June 4 th. He was honored for leading the way in advancing a student-centered educational ministry anchored on a rich heritage and its Catholic and Lasallian identity. Brother Gus Boquer, President and Chancellor, and Brother Victor A. Franco, Chair of the University s Board of Trustees, presented the doctorate and the Medal of St. John Baptist de La Salle. Brother James delivered the Convocation Address to an audience of 2,000 people, and while visiting he also met with administrators and faculty leaders at three other Lasallian colleges and universities to discuss various forms of collaboration. Summer pilgrimage offered a formative experience In July participants from the Lasallian Region of North America (RELAN) and the District of Spain (ARLEP) traveled for ten days on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. The experience, themed Together as Brothers, offered Brothers and young men discerning their vocation the opportunity to journey together both physically and spiritually. In addition to the daily walk of twelve miles or more, participants engaged in prayer and faith sharing. The group started walking the ancient pilgrimage route in Mondoñedo, Spain, on July 14 th and concluded at the Shrine of St. James in Santiago, Spain, on July 21 st. There were eight days of walking during which over one hundred miles were traversed. Those who participated from the Midwest District included Brother Larry Schatz, Visitor; Brother Moses Abunya (Lwanga) a doctoral student at Lewis University;

4 Brother Postulants Ryan Anderson, Johnathon Emanuelson and Michael Phipps who will all enter the novitiate on August 1 st ; and Matthew Kotek, a postulant who will enter Jeremy House in mid-august. DeLaSalle H.S. begins construction On May 9 th DeLaSalle H.S. in Minneapolis broke ground for the construction of its latest multi-million dollar facility improvement. Students and staff joined several benefactors and friends to begin the latest enhancement to the campus. President Barry Lieske led the community in prayer and reminded the audience that all enhancements are done with the best interests of students and their learning at the forefront. The Center for Innovative Learning will be the centerpiece for campus expansion and renovation. The hub of the center features flexible spaces for creative, activity and project-based learning, spaces for multimedia production and interdepartmental instruction, and resources for enhanced use of emerging technologies in all academic fields. The new facility is scheduled to open by the fall of Fe y Vida held ceremony at Lewis Instituto Fe y Vida, the Institute for Faith and Life, and Lewis University held a Blessing and Ribbon Ceremony at Saint Charles Borromeo Center on June 26 th to celebrate its official relocation from California to the campus. A ministry of the Midwest District of the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Fe y Vida provides innovative strategies to empower Catholic Latino and Hispanic young people for leadership in the Church and society. The Institute focuses on religious and pastoral formation programs and resources for ministry. Speakers at the ceremony included Dr. Carmen Cervantes, Executive Director of Instituto Fe y Vida; Brother Larry Schatz, Provincial of the Christian Brothers of the Midwest, and Brother James Gaffney, President of Lewis University. Blessing of the offices was provided by Rev. Alejandro Lopez Cardinale, President of La Red National Catholic Network of Pastoral Juvenil Hispana. Fe y Vida conducted its annual National Summer Program on the Lewis campus from June 28 th to July 4 th. The conference provides leadership training for young Hispanic adults, training them to evangelize in the Latino Community. Kathleen Glackin named Lasallian Volunteers Director Kathleen Glackin will serve as the next director of Lasallian Volunteers (LV), effective July 13, She served for two years as an LV and has been a member of the LV staff as recruitment coordinator for two years. General Councilor Brother Timothy Coldwell announced the appointment, which came after a two-month search process. Kathleen served as a Lasallian Volunteer from in Memphis at De La Salle Elementary at Blessed Sacrament. After completing her two years of service, she continued to volunteer at De La Salle as she took on the role of assistant campus minister for the Diocese of Memphis. Advancement Days 2015 program was successful For seventy-five Lasallians and several honorary Lasallians from twenty-one of the Midwest District s ministries, this past June s Advancement Days 2015 at Marriott in Burr Ridge, IL, was more than just a typical conference. Attendees came together to take part in a two-day advancement conference devoted not only to professional development, but just as importantly, to building meaningful relationships with their Lasallian brothers and sisters around the District. Since the commencement of Advancement Days 2014 at Lewis University, the conference s purpose has remained the same, to encourage the fundamental Lasallian Charism of Together and by Association. Each day of this year s conference was dedicated to specific topics and attendees were able to choose from sessions related to advancement communications and major gift fundraising. Speakers came from an array of institutions including the Cristo Rey Network, University of Chicago,

5 University of Notre Dame, Misericordia, and Lurie Children s Hospital. Preparation for next year s conference has already begun. Advancement Days 2016 will take place at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, TN and will include a new admissions track. New communications specialist joined Christian Brothers Conference Anna Waddelove joined Christian Brothers Conference as the communications specialist effective June 8 th. She brings a background in graphic design, marketing, and content creation for online and print. She most recently served as the marketing and communications specialist for Commonwealth Catholic Charities in Richmond, VA. A Virginia native, she graduated with a degree in photography and digital media from Cambridge School of Art and Design in Cambridge, England. Congratulations to all! All Brothers are invited to the 10 th Annual Alumni Golf Outing Save the Dates - Lasallian Days Fall 2015 are coming The District Office is gearing up for the 10 th Annual Alumni Golf Outing. Over the past nine years the outing has generated close to $300,000 for the care of Senior Brothers. Alumni from St. George and St. Mel, as well as friends of the Brothers, are invited to participate. Brothers who would like to play golf, attend dinner, help out with registration, or simply be present may contact Megan Davison at , ext. 218 or at mdavison@cbmidwest.org.
