This course will cover the history and development of Costa Rica's environment policy and action, how

2 environment policy and action, how communities engage the environment in terms of tourism, multinational agricultural companies, and economic development. We will meet with government officials, environmental experts, and community action groups. We will also travel to Costa Rica on a 10 day study tour to learn firsthand about Costa Rica's environmental record. The study tour is designed to be very interactive with local people and organizations. We will visit and stay in small towns along the Caribbean coast, visiting Tortugaro National Park, Cahuita, Puerto Viego, and the BriBri Indigenous Reserve. The estimated cost of the trip (over spring break) is $2100 (includes airfare, hotels, meals, in-country transportation, professional translator). A stipend is available to help defray some of the cost. Contact Dr. Thornburg for more information.
