Camp News There is not a lot of space in this newsletter for much else than what I have put in but of course, like Jell-o, there s always room for a little more. So here are two things: 1. We will have an Adopt-A-Road cleanup on Saturday, March 11th at 9:00 am. This is at our usual River Crossing site and everything, as usual, will be provided. 2. The MD Division SCV Convention is coming up on April 15th. This should be a very good event and our Rockville based Confederate statue will certainly be discussed (see page 5 of this newsletter. There is a discount for anyone signing up before April 1st. I have a large information packet for the event. I will be ing to all camp members and Friends separately. For those of you receiving the newsletter by mail, please call me at , and I will print out and mail to you the information. The Maryland Division SCV Color Guard Schedule Well, here it is! If you have any doubts about the dedication and motivation to Advance the Colors, then rid yourself of them as the decision to put the Color Guard s schedule in this month s newsletter bumped almost everything else that was planned. This list is huge! Past events have been omitted in order to save a little space. What s more is that this is a first cut. There may be more events added! *** Please note that Compatriot Rays Rooks, who is the driving force of the Maryland Color Guard, and has been for many years, just lost his wife suddenly. Catherine Arrington Rooks was just laid to rest on Thursday, March 2nd. Please give Ray many prayers. Our Montgomery County Confederate Soldier Statue Is Back In The News Things have heated up again with the Confederate statue located next to the County courthouse in Rockville. The recent shot that was fired involved a listing by Montgomery County government on Craig s List to sell it! Can you believe that. Next, the MD Division SCV decided to pursue some legal action. Finally, the County issued a news release proclaiming that the statue will be moved to White s Ferry! If I was reading this right now, I wouldn t believe it either. So I have included the letter to Maryland SCV Members from Maryland Division Commander Terry Klima as well as the Montgomery County news release below. Take an aspirin or get a drink after reading this stuff! Obviously, more to come on this topic. Gentlemen, Here is the latest Press Release from Montgomery County Executive Leggett regarding the Rockville Confederate Monument and the County's intended action to relocate the monument to White's Ferry. You will recall a vote recently taken of our Camps, proposing the authorization of funds to engage legal counsel to pursue the filing of a Maryland Public Information Act request. Camps voiced their overwhelming support of the initiative and the authorized action was implemented on Monday. As descendents, we prefer that the monument remains in the same location that it has been since it was dedicated in 1913 and hopefully, as additional information becomes available, we will find a way to do so. The County will be issuing a Request for proposal (RFP) for the monument's relocation, which involves a bid process. The issuance and publication of the RFP, as well as obtaining and evaluating proposals, will cause some delay in the ability of the County to move the monument As further information becomes available, updates will be forwarded. Please keep your Camp members informed. In light of the Rockville Monument issue, I would encourage all Division Compatriots to attend this year's Division Convention on April 15th. The Convention will provide an opportunity to discuss in detail what steps we as a Division take in defense of our Heritage and the preservation of our monuments. Regards, Terry Klima LEGGETT MOVES FORWARD ON PLAN TO RELOCATE ROCKVILLE CONFEDERATE SOLDIER STATUE; White s Ferry Site Would Be Accessible to Public Montgomery County Maryland sent this bulletin at 02/28/ :05 PM EST For immediate release: Tuesday, February 28, 2017 LEGGETT MOVES FORWARD ON PLAN TO RELOCATE ROCKVILLE CONFEDERATE SOLDIER STATUE; White s Ferry Site Would Be Accessible to Public County Executive Ike Leggett today announced that the statue of a Confederate cavalryman, currently located next to the Old Red Brick Courthouse in downtown Rockville, has been transferred to private ownership and will moved to private property at White s Ferry in northwestern Montgomery County. The statue, the only veterans statue in Montgomery County, was donated to the County by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1913 and honored County men who served in the Confederate States Army during the War Between the States, which lasted from April 1861 to May of The inscription reads: To Our Heroes of Montgomery County Maryland: That We Through Life May Not Forget to Love the Thin Gray Line. I fully understand that the statue reflects a piece of County history and that many County residents are proud Page 5

6 Montgomery County Confederate Soldier Statue (continued from page 4) of the sacrifices and bravery shown by their ancestors, said County Executive Leggett. Nonetheless, as originally enacted, it was not, and is not, part of the heritage of all of our residents. When originally constructed and placed on County property, it failed to reflect both sides of this unfortunate struggle in our history. That is why I strongly opposed keeping this statue on County property and wanted to move it to another location in the County that would be accessible to County residents. The ownership of the statue has been transferred to White s Ferry, Inc. which operates the vehicle ferry at White s Ferry, which carries vehicles between Montgomery County and the Leesburg/Loudoun County, Virginia area on the other side of the Potomac River. The ferry is the last of the many ferries which once crossed the Potomac and ferry operations there date back to The County had issued an Invitation for Bid to move the 16-foot tall, 25,000 pound statue. The County will cover the cost of moving and relocating the statue at the historic White s Ferry recreation area. I am happy to provide a place for the statue to be relocated, said R. Edwin Brown, attorney for White s Ferry, Inc. Those who wish to visit it will be able to do just that. The County Executive initially approved a recommendation to move the statue to the grounds of the pre-civil War Beall-Dawson House in downtown Rockville. That relocation, however, was rejected by the Rockville City Council in June of The soldier statue currently peaks out above a 20-foot box erected in August 2015 to protect the statue after July 27, 2015 spray-painting vandalism. The County cleaned the statue, added an anti-graffiti coating, and built the box. County Executive Leggett denounced the vandalism as a despicable act that was not in keeping with Montgomery County s long history of civil discourse and that dishonored County veterans. # # # Contact: Patrick Lacefield, The Sons of Confederate Veterans is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization that, with regard to the War Between the States, participates in the study of history and genealogy and in the preservation of historic sites, monuments, and grave markers; awards scholarships and medical research grants; and practices good citizenship.
