1 1 NORTH POLE HIGH SCHOOL FEBRUARY 2018 Issue 6 North Pole High School February 2018 NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Monday, February a.m. 1 p.m. and 2 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 20 8 a.m. noon and 1 4:30 p.m.

2 NORTH POLE HIGH SCHOOL FEBRUARY 2018 Issue 6 2 Automotive by Jerry Million Hey Million!...Can I borrow a set of Jumper Cables? One of the top ten tools I get asked for is a set of jumper cables. When a student asks me for a pair, my response is always Do you know how to properly use them? Properly being the key word. If the answer is incorrect, I will explain or find a student who has been properly trained to assist. Most people have jumped started another vehicle with booster cables (another word for Jumper Cables) or watched someone do it. The issue is, most folks have learned how to do this incorrectly. Most batteries in vehicles today are flooded lead acid batteries or AGM which produce hydrogen gas when charging and discharging. A spark near this gas can cause an explosion, throwing pieces of the battery and sulfuric acid all over the well-intentioned booster person. While it is true that this does not occur very often, it is why all instructions by car & battery manufacturers, service manuals, as well as booster cable manufacturers tell you to connect the last negative cable AWAY from the battery to a solid metal ground. (The negative cable of the battery connects to all metal parts of the vehicle) This assures that a spark is not produced near any gas that may be on top of the battery. Those lucky souls who have been hooking up directly to the batteries have been fortunate enough to meet a battery in which the gas has dissipated. In the steps below, you will also notice the negative cable & positive cable are not connected at the same time. The reason again, to prevent sparks. Connect positive to positive, negative on one battery & then the last connection somewhere on metal away from the battery. Here are some other points to consider when Jump Starting Make sure that the battery will respond to a jump start. Pull on the headlights. If they are bright and do not dim when the key is turned, you have a primary circuit issue and jump starting will not work. Do not attempt to boost a frozen battery. Look over the battery for cracks & bulging. Make certain you are connecting to the positive & negative post. DO NOT assume the color is correct. Red, or other colors (Blue, Green etc.) may hooked to the negative, in which case you will damage the vehicles by introducing 24 volts instead of the 12 the car likes. Think dollar signs $$$$$$$$$ as it will cost plenty doing this incorrectly. Use 4-6 gauge cables if you plan on delivering sufficient current quickly. Smaller 10 gauge will work but you must sit longer while the alternator of the good vehicle charges the battery of the dead one. The steps to Boost a car 1. Connect one red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery. 2. Connect the other red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the good battery. 3. Connect one black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the good battery. a. Connect the other black clamp to a piece of grounded metal on the dead battery Students in North Pole High School s Automotive Technology Program are trained to understand, diagnosis, and properly repair the complicated systems on today s high-tech vehicles. We are training technicians for the 21 st Century.
