SUBJECT: 10-3a Small school shows it has a big heart FANNIE SUNSHINE Mirror Guardian 12/21/05 The number of students at St. Cyril Catholic Elementary School in North York may be small, but their hearts are far from it. When the devastating tsunami hit Southeast Asia last Christmas, leaving tens of thousands of people dead or homeless, students from across Toronto leapt into action, organizing fundraisers to assist with relief efforts. Some 360 students from the Yonge Street and Finch Avenue area school raised a whopping $5,000 for the Canadian Red Cross through a number of initiatives, including bake sales and garage sales, to help those overseas. On Friday, students gathered for a special presentation by the humanitarian organization to get an update on the Canadian Red Cross's tsunami relief and recovery effort and also heard from Ole Flyng, the Canadian Red Cross delegate in Indonesia.

SUBJECT: 10-3b "This is something we are going to do at any school that would like to have a presentation," said Bridget Brown, Canadian Red Cross communications co-ordinator for the Toronto region. "St. Cyril is a very small school and their donation is so significant. Ole Flyng came back from Indonesia with some great stories and told the students of the Red Cross recovery efforts. A lot of Torontonians have family and friends who had been in the affected regions." The Canadian Red Cross is busy building transitional housing in Indonesia and day-care centres in India, Brown said, adding the organization plans to remain in these countries helping to rebuild for the next 10 years. "The students were so excited," she said of Friday's presentation. "It was beyond our expectations. I didn't know they were so interested. The children had the same questions adults and media have." Although much progress has been made recovery-wise, Brown said there is still much to do and donations are always needed. "We've made great progress but there is so much road to travel," she said. "We want to build back better." Joseph D'Ippolito, a teacher at St. Cyril, said each class took on a project shortly after the tsunami hit to help with the fundraising effort. "They really got into it," he said. "(The school is) small, but if everyone does a little bit and you add everything together, it makes a big difference. The Red Cross did a Power Point presentation and told the students where their money went. The students were amazed that they actually made a difference and what was raised was going toward something." SUBJECT: 10-4a

SUBJECT: 10-4b THE DIRECTOR S BULLETIN #17

SUBJECT: 10-5 Henry Carr home to strong hoops squad SAM LASKARIS Mirror/Guardian 12/21/05 The Father Henry Carr Crusaders have been a rather intimidating force this season. The local high school senior boys' basketball team has been cruising through its regular season schedule in the Toronto District Colleges Athletic Association (TDCAA). Father Henry Carr was not seriously challenged in its first four league contests with the Crusaders registering lopsided wins in all of those matches, including its win over Don Bosco last Wednesday. Father Henry Carr was tied atop the league's 12-team West Division along with the Michael Power/St. Joseph Trojans, who also were sporting a 4-0 mark. The Crusaders were expected to continue their winning ways yesterday (Tuesday) against winless (0-4) Chaminade College, in a game held after The Guardian's press deadline. Father Henry Carr coach Paul Melnik does not believe his charges will be seriously challenged during the regular season. "The West is not a strong division," he said. The Crusaders' smallest margin of victory in league play thus far was 60 - that's right 60 - points in its season opening win over St. Basil. The TDCAA also features a 10-squad East Division. This division includes the defending league champion Mother Teresa Titans of Scarborough, who beat the Crusaders in the TDCAA final last season. Melnik is confident his side can take a better run at the league crown this season. And that might be a surprise to some. "We have seven new players on the team," Melnik said. "And we only have one starter back." That would be 6-foot-6 centre Stanley Ankrah. Overall, Father Henry Carr has a record of The Crusaders have been and will continue to be rather active in tournament play this season. Father Henry Carr lost to Mother Teresa in the final of its own tournament last month. The Crusaders then posted a 1-2 record at a Kitchener tourney. Father Henry Carr then won a bronze medal at an event in Hamilton earlier this month. The Crusaders are now entered in a 16-club event, which begins today (Wednesday) and continues until Friday at Mississauga's St. Francis Xavier. Father Henry Carr will then head south to compete at a tournament in Tennessee from Dec. 27 through Jan. 1. The Crusaders will also participate in four other tournaments during January and February. SUBJECT: 10-6 Dante Alighieri Academy, a school of life Luigi de Biase Students at the Catholic school volunteer for many activities Students carrying crates and boxes crowd the corridors of the Dante Alighieri Academy: they head to the mess hall downstairs and line up the containers. Someone counts them, while the rest chat adjusting the stuff. "It's become a tradition," says Angela Piscitelli, principal of this Catholic school located at Lawrence & Dufferin. "When Christmas approaches, we ask our students to bring food that will be donated to the poor. We manage to help no fewer than three charities. This is not a school for rich kids, but there are some amazing displays of generosity." Angela calls two 17-year-old girls, Krystal and Paula. Both of them belong to a chaplaincy group led by sister Patricia Melanson, a Salesian nun. "I've joined this group a few months ago," says Krystal, "when I was going through a rough patch in my life, and thanks to this group I managed to react. Feeling surrounded by people who look out for you is simply marvellous." That's an indirect response to episodic violence that some schools of our city have recently experienced. "I don't think that our school is particularly better than the rest, or immune to any possible accident," adds Piscitelli. "But we try to build something every day, to give our kids a chance to change their world. We owe them this much; we cannot simply teach them science or math. We must convince them that they can change the world." Students continue to pack foodstuff in the boxes. Krystal and Paula tell of their favourite activity, the 'solidarity patrols.' "We grab three sandwiches and a pair of gloves," explains Paula, "and go to town with Sister Pat. We meet with homeless people, speak with them, share our food with them. Not having a home or anyone helping you is a real social injustice." Then comes green-eyed Vanessa, 17 like the other girls: her father is Portuguese, her mother Italian. "I went to Africa last summer," she remarks, "with the help of my school and an international organization of volunteers. I stayed a few kilometres from Nairobi, Kenya. I taught English to children, helping them also in their everyday life. A smile was enough to get understood and accepted. I would like to return to that village some day, but first I must get my university degree. I want to study to be useful to others."

SUBJECT: 10-7 I Care Project Students at St. Jerome and St. Wilfrid Catholic School participated in a fundraising project during Advent in partnership with St. Wilfrid Parish. Under the leadership of Father Massey Lombardi, the students sold "I Care" bracelets and held pizza days, dress down days, gym activities and dances to raise funds for Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Uganda. Father Lombardi will deliver the money raised when he visits Uganda on January 23rd.

SUBJECT: 11 MEMORIALS Let us remember in prayer the souls of the deceased members of the TCDSB community and their loved ones, particularly the following who have died recently... for these we pray: May the angels lead them into paradise.
