1 ICMOND SPIDES (3-7) at #21 TEXAS LONGONS (7-6) UFCU Disch-Falk Field - Austin, Texas SCOUTING TE OPPONENT The Longhorns enter the midweek matchup on a three-game skid - having dropped three of four at Stanford. Michael McCann leads Texas at the plate with a.455 batting average while Kacy Clemens leads the team with nine BI and three home runs. The Series: This will be the first meeting between the two schools. TE 2017 SLATE In total, ichmond will face six NCAA Tournament teams in ight off the bat, the Spiders will play at reigning national champion, Coastal Carolina. In addition, the Spiders also take on perennial powers Virginia, North Carolina, Texas, St. John s, Maryland and Michigan State, who will be playing at Pitt Field as part of the Spider Invitational. ETUNING TO TE LINEUP The Spiders lost two pitchers at the start of the season in obbie Baker and Brendan McGuigan. Baker went down a few weeks before the season started with an ACL injury, while McGuigan had Tommy John s surgery last spring after coming out of his first start of the year against UNCW. ONE FINAL TIME - TE SIXT YEA GUYS ichmond has two guys on the roster that were both granted a sixth-year of eligibility this year - Jon de Marte and Zach Grossfeld. Both began their careers in 2012 and were plagued by injury, both also will have bachelor s and a Master s degree upon leaving the Unviersity this spring. The duo both played completely healthly last season, for the first time since joining the Spiders. ECODS TO WATC Junior Daniel Brumbaugh is nearing the top-10 in program history for saves. The right-hander currently has seven saves and one more will tie him for tenth all-time. ead Coach Tracy Woodson is also approaching a milestone as notching 100 wins as the Spiders head coach is on the horizon. Junior Daniel Brumbaugh, sophomores Kyle Schmidt, Brendan McGuigan and Layne Looney all hail from the Lonestar State. ead Coach Tracy Woodson also played for the San Antonio Dodgers in WELCOME OME NEW SPIDES Coach Woodson and his staff welcomed 11 newcomers this fall - eight freshmen and three transfers. Woodson said, This is a great recruiting class that filled the needs on both the offensive and defensive side - the biggest need was pitching and we feel that we have filled that need. TE INCOMING ECUITING CLASS The Spiders have been recognized as one of the nation s top recruiting classes for the season. Both Collegiate Baseball and College Baseball Daily have tabbed the Spiders class among the best. ichmond, who landed at 101 on the list, were joined by only one other Atlantic 10 school, Saint Louis, who was ranked at 109. Did You Know? ead Coach Tracy Woodson won a World Series Championship as a player with the Los Angeles Dodgers in Coach Woodson is one of four Division I head coaches to have won a World Series - he is also just one of 10 Division I head coaches to have played in the Major League. Assistant Coach/Pitching Coach Josh Davis is the son of former Chicago Cubs catcher, Jody Davis. Freshman Tim Miller is the grandson of ichmond all of Famer Louis "Weenie" Miller. Freshman Justin Cook is the brother of former Spider Baseball standout, yan Cook, who currently pitches in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. The Spider Baseball program has has had 41 MLB Draft picks since ichmond was well represented at the World Series - Sean Casey and Mark Budzinski were both drafted by the Cleveland Indians. Casey is now a TV analyst for the MLB Network while Budzinski was just named the Manager for the Double-A Akron ubber Ducks. On the other side of the World Series was Bobby Basham, who is the Assistant Director of minor League Operations for the Chicago Cubs.
