4 4 Bayan Campus Presentation Approaches Methods of English Language Teaching Dr. Mohamed Safwat Hassan, Head of Foundation Department, Bayan College, gave a presentation about Approaches Methods of English Language Teaching. Dr. Mohamed commenced his presentation with a brief introduction about status of English language worldwide nature of language. Then he introduced four different approaches methods of English language teaching. The first oldest method of English language teaching is Grammar Translation Method. He shed light on its nature main principles. This method focuses on two language skills: reading writing, neglects listening speaking. It pays great attention to translation from into target language. The teacher students use ir native language throughout class time. The second method is direct method which is considered a rebellion against Grammar Translation Method. This Method prohibits use of mor tongue in teaching a foreign language. Translation is not allowed at all, instead, teacher can use drawings, photos real objects to show meaning. The third method is Audio-Lingual Method or Military Method. This method is based on Behaviourism that considers language learning as a process of habit formation. According to this method, purpose of language learning is to learn how to use language to communicate. Finally presenter introduced Communicative Approach, which is based on belief that language is communication. This approach is a realistic one. In it, target language is a vehicle for classroom communication, not just object of study. Students are given an opportunity to express ir ideas opinions. Dr. Mohamed concluded that every method has its own merits demerits, that a clever teacher should select method or approach that suits his students skill he needs to develop. The presenter elaborated that a translator is more concerned with ideas concepts than literal meaning of a certain word or phrase. Anor participant said that it is better to be exposed to language in its own country. The presenter commented that it is a good idea but not a realistic one as it is approximately impossible to send thouss of learners abroad to learn a foreign language for social financial purposes. A third participant raised issue of more appropriate for teaching target language: native or non-native speaker. The presenter explained that it would be more realistic if a wellqualified non-native speaker of language would be more appropriate for teaching a foreign language for financial, ethical cultural considerations. HEIs should conduct a rigorous SWOT analysis to chart out its strengths & weaknesses; pinpoint its available opportunities & prepare for impending threats. To maintain enhance overall qualitative environment, HEIs must develop a mechanism of quality cycle based on ADRI- Approach, Deployment, Results Improvement. This quality cycle revolves around four questions: What is purpose that needs to be achieved? (Approach), What are resources which are being employed to achieve that purpose? (Deployment), What are evidences to show achievement of purpose? (Results) How are evidences being used to implement ongoing improvement? (Improvement). HEIs should align ir various activities under canopy of Quality Assurance Office which monitors & reviews overall quality enhancement environment. This unit should be strengned all or units of HEIs must be pegged to this office. This will put in place system that will grease wheel of quality cycle resulting in improvement of quality culture which promotes a culture of responsibility & accountability.
