2 THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY Graded has been serving children of diplomatic, business, academic and professional families in São Paulo since Founded by the American Chamber of Commerce, the school is an independent, non-profit, co-educational day school, which prepares students for admission to competitive universities. The 1195 students represent 37 nationalities: 28% North American 45 % Brazilian 11% Latin American 10% Asian 5% European 1% other Enrollment: High School 365 Elementary School 403 Middle School 271 Pre-primary School 156 English is the language of instruction; an ESL program is available through grade ten. Located in São Paulo, South America s largest metropolis, the 16-acre/6.5 hectare campus encompasses 85 classrooms, a fine arts center, 2 theatres, 2 libraries, 16 computer labs (two for digital film making), 770 computers, two gymnasiums, two covered courts, two climbing walls, a 300m track; a multi-purpose court and four tennis courts. ACCREDITATION Escola Graduada is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (AdvancED) and the Brazilian Ministry of Education. The school is also a member of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), the Association of American Schools in South America (AASSA), and the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). CURRICULUM All students follow a college preparatory curriculum which leads to the American high school diploma. Seven courses are the minimum required course load per year. Students must complete eight semesters of study beyond the eighth grade for a minimum of 24 credits. (Course Descriptions are available at Following are the requirements: English 4 credits History 3 credits Language other than English 1 course every year Science 3 credits Mathematics 3 credits Visual and Performing Arts 1.5 credits Physical Education 1.5 credits Health 0.5 credits Information Sciences (Students must pass the Sophomore Project.) Since 1985, Graded has offered the International Baccalaureate Diploma and Certificates. All Juniors and Seniors participate in the IB Program. Students may elect to concurrently earn a Brazilian high school diploma, which requires Brazilian Social Studies and an additional year of Science and Math. Advanced Placement Calculus courses are also available.
3 STUDENT EVALUATION The High School uses a numerical grading system. Marking standards are rigorous. The top ten students tend to have GPA s in the range. Grades of represent superior performance Alpha Honor Roll (90+, no grade below an 80) Grades of above average Beta Honor Roll (82~89, no grade below a 70) Grades of average Grades of below average Grades of 64 and below failing grade (no credit) SYMBOLS IB = International Baccalaureate AP = Advanced Placement PGC = Peer Group Connection EAP = English for Academic Purposes PFL I ~ VI = Portuguese as a Foreign Language course H = Honors (offered in math through Geometry and Algebra II/Trigonometry) GRADE POINT AVERAGE Six points are added for a grade of 70 or above in IB weighted courses, marked (W). GPA is calculated on the basis of the weighted scale. Students are not ranked. GPA is calculated on Escola Graduada course work in grades 11 and 12 only. Courses satisfactorily completed at other schools are listed for credit purposes only. All courses, except pass/fail courses, are used in computing the GPA. The GPA is calculated using final course grades. If a course is repeated, both final grades are included in the GPA calculation. On a 1-7 scale 92% of the students scored 4 or higher, scoring at or above the world mean in 28 subjects. 32 Diploma Candidates earned the IB diploma, with an average test score of The average accumulated scores for a diploma recipient was 32 out of 45, with a high of 40 points. Graduation requirement: all students must take at least 3 IB courses and exams. All IB Higher Level (HL) Math students are also required to sit the AP Calculus AB exam.
