2 Academic Support Program The Academic Support Program assists student-athletes in exploring their interests and abilities, enjoying a broad educational experience, and reaching or exceeding their academic goals. Located primarily in the Pope Academic Support Center, the program opened its doors in It is equipped with study facilities, tutorial rooms, a computer lab, a 128-seat auditorium and counselors' offices. At the center, students meet with staff to discuss course selection, major exploration, academic progress and academic eligibility. During the academic year, 247 Carolina student-athletes made the ACC Academic Honor Roll, which requires a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 for the year. In the fall of 2003, 143 student-athletes made the Dean's List, and 141 did so in the spring of Our young people are students first and athletes second and that will always be the case at the University, says Athletic Director Dick Baddour. That is a credit to our coaches, administrators and support staff, but most of all, our student-athletes. Their accomplishments in the classroom are very impressive. Robert Mercer is the director of the Academic Support Program and Brent Blanton is the academic counselor for the softball team. The Academic Support Program serves approximately 800 student-athletes. The Academic Support Center is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the week and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. Visitors are welcome to tour the facility during afternoon hours. Another facet of the Academic Support Program is the Academic Team Captain Program. Anna Evans serves as ATC for the softball team, providing a link between the Academic Support Center and the squad. The second-year program helps recognize student-athletes for their academic achievements and provides leadership opportunites. Academic Excellence Four Tar Heels Anna Evans, Joslin Higgins, Jaclyn Holden and Alison Yin earned spots on the ACC Honor Roll for the school year. To be named to the list, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the year while carrying at least 12 hours per semester and competing in a varsity sport. Six met an even higher standard this fall, earning Dean s List honors. Those named to the Dean s List for fall were Crystal Cox, Julia Bove, Evans, Higgins, Holden and Yin. Evans, Higgins, Holdena nd Yin, along with Jessica Graziano, earned Dean s List honors last spring. To be named to the Dean s List, students must maintain a 3.2 grade point average while carrying 15 hours or more, or a 3.5 while carrying 12 to 14 hours ACC Academic Honor Roll Anna Evans Joslin Higgins Jaclyn Holden Alison Yin Dean s List (Spring 2004, Fall 2004) Sports Medicine and Athletic Training The Tar Heels receive excellent care from one of the country s best sports medicine staffs. Dr. Tim Taft, Director of Sports Medicine, oversees a comprehensive program designed to keep student-athletes healthy and to rehabilitate any injuries quickly and successfully. Dr. Tom Brickner is the team physician for softball. Head athletic trainer Dan Hooker oversees a full-time staff of athletic trainers and physical therapists as well as numerous graduate and undergraduate student trainers. The head athletic trainer for the softball team is Scott Oliaro. Also working with the team are graduate student athletic trainers Mike Hughes and Christin Chamberlain, and u n d e rgraduate student trainer Christopher Adams. Community Service The Tar Heels give back to the Chapel Hill community throughout the year by participating in a variety of service projects, including Share Your Holidays, in which the team adopts a local family and provides its members with Christmas gifts. Softball players also help build houses through Habitat for Humanity and make regular visits to the Chapel Hill Ronald McDonald House, among other outreach activities. Jessica Young (front) and Ashley Allen cook dinner for guests at the Ronald McDonald House Fitness and Conditioning The softball team trains in an 8,000-square foot fitness center under the supervision of Steve Gisselman, Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning for Olympic Sports. The main fitness center, one of three facilities used by Carolina athletes, is located in Kenan Fieldhouse below the Student-Athlete Development Center. In addition to its free and Olympic weights, the center features a performance lab where specialized aerobic equipment is used for conditioning and monitoring rehabilitation progress. The softball team uses modern strength, flexibility and conditioning methods in a year-round cycle. This training produces athletes who are prepared to compete successfully and safely. Julia Bove Crystal Cox Anna Evans Jessica Graziano Joslin Higgins Jaclyn Holden Alison Yin Carolina Leadership Academy Beginning in 2004, UNC student-athletes will participate in the Carolina Leadership Academy, which will develop, challenge and support student-athletes, coaches and staff in their quest to become world-class leaders in academics, athletics and life. The Academy will consist of three programs: PERSONAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM Leadership training begins in the freshman year. All leadership begins with personal leadership, therefore freshmen are taught skills to effectively lead themselves. Working with Carolina s traditional freshman program Athletes Coming Together (ACT), training consists of monthly meetings featuring keynote speakers and small group discussion. Upperclass student-athletes serve as peer mentors and discussion leaders. EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM Designed for a select group of high potential sophomores and juniors, this program provides future leaders with insights, strategies and skills necessary to become effective leaders. The program includes monthly meetings, interactive exercises and action learning experiences, emphasizing leading by example. ESTABLISHED LEADERS PROGRAM Designed for team captains and veteran student-athletes, this program provides advanced leadership training and support and teaches the critical skills and insights necessary to be effective vocal leaders. In providing a strong peer network, student-athletes meet regularly to learn and reinforce leadership principles and share successes, frustrations and lessons.

The Tar Heels played in the NCAA Regionals for the third time in the last four years, making their 2004 appearance via an at-large bid and competing in Waco, Texas. On the way to the postseason, Carolina put together an impressive stretch, winning 21 of 23 games from March 13 to April 15 and 10 in a row between March 13 and 20. UNC finished second in the ACC regular season with a 6-4 record and placed third in the ACC Tournament. Some highlights of the season were a sweep of ACC rival Virginia in Charlottesville, a 3-2 win over 24thranked Georgia Tech and a sweep of East Carolina in which senior shortstop Emily Price hit three home runs in three consecutive at-bats in the doubleheader. In NCAA play, the Tar Heels opened against host Baylor and took the third-seeded Bears to the 16th inning before falling 1-0. After a 4-0 win over Texas-San Antonio, the Tar Heels found themselves in another scoreless, extra-inning game, which Seton Hall eventually won 1-0 in 12 innings. Price breaks single-season homers mark With 16 home runs in her senior year, Emily Price set a school singleseason school record. The old mark was held by Natalie Anter, who hit 15 in Price tied Anter s record with a game-winning blast in a 1-0 win over Campbell on May 8. She broke the record in the team s next game, a 7-2 win over Maryland in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. Cox provides impressive finale Pitcher Crystal Cox wrapped up an impressive sophomore season by pitching two of her best games at the NCAA Regionals in Waco, Texas. Against host Baylor, the third seed, Cox pitched 15 shutout innings before finally giving up a run in the 16th for a 1-0 loss. Cox faced third-seeded Baylor on May 20 and shut the Bears out for 15 innings until finally allowing a run to cross the plate in the 16th, as UNC fell 1-0. She followed that standout performance with another one in her next start against Seton Hall in the Tar Heels third NCAA game. Again, she took a shutout into extra innings before giving up a run, this time in the 12th. For her efforts, Cox was named to the All-Region team along with Dionne Streete. Seniors leave winning legacy At the end of the season, North Carolina said goodbye to five seniors: Jessica Graziano, Emily Price, Jessica Robinson, Natashalyn Snipes and Dionne Streete. The senior class was part of all three NCAA tournament trips in school history (2001, 2003 and 2004) and helped the team to 156 wins, the second highest total in a four-year span in school history honors and awards Emily Price All Southeast Region first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference Dionne Streete All-Atlantic Coast Conference All-NCAA Regional Team Crystal Cox: All-NCAA Regional Team Natashalyn Snipes All-ACC Tournament Team Jessica Graziano CoSIDA Academic All-America All-District Team Rewriting the record book Single Season Home Run Record: 16, Emily Price Single Season Strikeouts: 297, Crystal Cox Single Season Complete Games: 31, Crystal Cox Single Season Games Started: 66, Dionne Streete, Emily Price, Joslin Higgins, Jessica Young, Natashalyn Snipes Career Games Started: 244, Dionne Streete Career Games Played: 248, Emily Price Emily Price Crystal Cox Dionne Streete Natashalyn Snipes
