7 Plan of Action To enhance ICT based facilities for effective teaching and learning Upgradation of Labs Renovation of Departments and Hostels To augment sports facilities inorder to encourage increased participation To facilitate up-gradation of knowledge and research skills of the faculty To enhance the skill set of the students To upgrade the skills and enhance the competencies of the non teaching staff To apply for research grants to the UGC Achievements The ICT based facilities were further enhanced with addition of four new smart classrooms. Various labs were upgraded with purchase of new equipment. Three computers with latest configuration and state of art technology were acquired by the Department of Computer Science. Two LCD projectors were installed in the computer labs. Renovation work was carried out in the hostels and some of the departments of the college. With an aim to encourage the students to participate in Sports, following initiatives were undertaken: The Annual Budget allocation of the Department of Physical Education was raised. Budget allocation for providing free nutritious diet to the Sports students was further enhanced. Free boarding and lodging facility for the Sports students in the college hostels was further extended to 55 girls. Thirteen college players, recommended by the college, were honoured with a cash prize of Rs. 3, 07,950/- by PUSC, Chandigarh. With improved facilities, the number of teams to represent the college in various Inter-College competitions was extended to 22 different sports. An Orientation Programme for the new faculty was organized. A National Level Faculty Development Programme on Techniques of Writing research Paper: Application of Statistical Tecniques was organized. A Network Resource Centre with 19 computers and internet facility was established to provide computing and browsing facilities. N-List facility with access to e-journals and e-books was provided in the Centre. The number of research publications as well as participation of the college faculty in seminars and conferences increased considerably as compared to the previous years. Skill development summer workshops were organized under the Project Sashakt by the Departments of Fine Arts, Home Science, English, Music (Vocal), Computer Science and Commerce. Workshops on English Speaking and Typing were organized for the non-teaching staff with an objective to improve their work proficiency. Two minor research projects worth Rs. 1, 65, 000/- and Rs. 2, 05, 000/- were sanctioned by the UGC to Dr Priyaka Khanna and Mrs Paramjeet Kaur of Department of Commerce KHALSA COLLEGE FOR WOMEN AQAR
8 Increase community service participation amongst the students Promote awareness environmental Under the Triadic Development Programme, which was initiated for the holistic development of the students through being Enlightened, Empowered and Empathic, KCW Synapse, the college community club organized various activities with an objective of giving back to the society and sensitizing the students towards their social responsibility. Various community services were also undertaken by th college NSS, NCC, Red Cross clubs and various departments. Under the Green Initiative Programme, of the college, the Eco Club, Traffic Club, Gardening Club and the Botanical Society organized various activities to create awareness about the need to protect the environment and promote love for the surrounding biodiversity. Effective measures were undertaken for waste segregation, waste management, water harvesting and E-waste collection. The Feedback System was streamlined and a Students Feedback Analysis Report was prepared. The Self Study Report of the college was successfully compiled and the process associated with applying to NAAC for Second Cycle of Accreditation was also completed. 11 2.8 Examination/ Evaluation Reforms initiated by the Institution (for example: Open Book Examination, Bar Coding, Double Valuation, Photocopy, Online Multiple Choice Questions) The Panjab University, to which the College is affiliated, has implemented a number of examination/evaluation reforms. The College conforms by these reforms which include setting up of Examination Grievance monitoring System; Online submission of student registration, examination and re evaluation forms; Continuous Evaluation System of examination; Facility to see and procure photocopies of evaluated answer sheets; OMR based Exam forms and answer sheets with Bar Coding for faster processing; E-Admit cards; Computerization of result related process, etc. The faculty identifies the learning outcomes of every subject and accordingly plans their lessons as well as the evaluation. The students are examined at different stages of the learning process to gauge their progress. The internal assessment is based on both summative and formative assessments of the students. Com How does IQAC Contribute/Monitor/Evaluate the Teaching & Learning processes: IQAC motivates the staff members to participate in faculty development programmes from time to time so as to stay updated with recent developments in the pedagogy and innovative teaching practices. Academic calendar is designed in the beginning of the session and its compliance is assured by issuing directions to the teachers to prepare their lesson plans accordingly. The examination policy, Examination pattern for the house exams is declared at the very beginning of the academic session. Academic results are analysed by identifying areas of improvement and setting up new goals for the session. Remedial measures are taken up and suitable teaching methodologies are adopted to cater to the needs of the slow learners as well as the advanced learners. Participative learning is encouraged through class assignments and projects. Training workshops/seminars/expert lectures are organized for students and teachers. Library resources are regularly upgraded Emphasis is laid on practical and applied approach through field trips. Assignments are given to keep the students updated on recent developments in the discipline Projects are assigned to encourage group based research activities. 14 Criterion III Research, Consultancy and Extension 3.1 Initiatives of the IQAC in Sensitizing/Promoting Research Climate in the Institution Setting up of a Research Committee which makes consistent efforts to inculcate scientific temperament among students and staff. Establishment of a Network Resource Centre with computing and internet facility. N-List facility for access to e-journals and e-books was made available in the Network Resource Centre and all the departments of the college. All the major administrative and accounts tasks like students registration, continuation, online filing of examination forms, internal and external assessment, staff payroll, online transactions of TDS & PF, ESI etc are automated. The College library is computerized using the Software for University Libraries (SOUL) which is state-of-the-art integrated library management software designed and developed by the INFLIBNET Centre of UGC. The latest version of SOUL 2.0 has been installed to automate the major housekeeping operations of the library like cataloguing, circulation, barcoding etc. Computer Systems have also been placed in the library to provide browsing and computing facility to the staff and students. The Department of Computer Science organized a three weeks skill development programme on Website Design and Development for the students. A short term Certificate course on Graphics Design and Development was also organized by the Department of Computer Science to impart advanced computer skills to the students. 21 Criterion V Student Support and Progression 5.1 Contribution of IQAC in enhancing awareness about Student Support Services The college offers a gamut of Student Support Services for the students. The IQAC makes earnest efforts to spread awareness about these services. The availability of these services is publicized through the college prospectus, college website and notifications on the various college notice boards. The tutors also inform the students about the availability of the various support services for the welfare of the students. They are also encouraged to avail these services. 5.2 Efforts made by the institution for tracking the progression The college makes concerted efforts for optimal progression of the students. It facilitates the vertical movement of the students from one level of education to the next higher level by offering Post Graduate courses in various subjects. The college Placement and Guidance Cell plays an avid role in helping the students attain gainful employment. The college offers an array of Vocational subjects alongwith Carrer Oriented Programmes in the form of Add-On courses that have utility for job, self employment and empowerment of students. The KCW Career Coaching Cell of the college helps the students in preparing for various competitive exams. Various skill development workshops are organized under the Skill Development Programme of the college to enhance the employability skills of the students. The college makes efforts to keep track of the progression of the students. At the annual convocation of the college, progression data is collected from the students on a Progression Data form, especially designed for the purpose. All the students who pass out from the college are members of the college Alumni Association. Alumni meets are organized from time to time and serve as a forum for keeping track of the progression of the students. The demand ratio varies from course to course but the number of applications received for each course is quite substantial indicating the popularity of the courses among the students. 5.4 Details of student support mechanism for coaching for competitive examinations (If any) KCW Career Coaching Cell (KCW CCC) of the college has been established with the objective of nurturing talent and aptitude to prepare the students for the various competitive exams like Civil Services, Banking services, IELTS etc. The Cell organized expert lectures on How to crack Civil Services Exams and Enhancing the Employability Skills. Guidance on how to clear the exams is also provided by the respective departments. Further support in the form of access to books for preparing for the competitive exams is provided by the college library. The placement cell provides a platform to the career oriented students whereby they get an opportunity to be introduced to the competitive corporate world. The cell organises various workshops and interactive session with the industry experts to apprise the students about the latest developments and skill demands for obtaining productive employment. 28 5.13 Major grievances of students (if any) redressed: The Grievances Redressal Cell addressed grievances of the students, following which time table issues were resolved, additional furniture was added and electrical points were installed in the classrooms where required, quality of food served in the canteen was improved. 29 Criterion VI Governance, Leadership and Management 6.1 State the Vision and Mission of the institution VISION The College visualizes a future where women empowerment is no more a goal but a reality. Assurance of justice and equity in society to women by extending academic, financial, emotional and moral support is the focal point of the vision of the institution. MISSION KCW promises its stakeholders an opportunity to advance physically, mentally and spiritually in triadic harmony concordant with the tenet of the Khalsa, surrender the self to the community, enshrined in the College motto Sarbat da Bhala, the welfare of all. Women from all sections of society enter the portals of this institution which provides them with an opportunity to flourish and to attain their full potential. The mission of the institute is to direct the mind of the young generation so as to engage in the task of nation building. Its aim is to provide the nation with an honest, hardworking and dedicated workforce. It seeks to bring about a change in society s attitude towards women by inculcating confidence in them regarding their own potential as an economically independent workforce and equal partner in social transformation. 6.2 Does the Institution have a Management Information System The College has adopted ICT for effective and efficient information management which in turn is used to enhance functional effectiveness of the College system. ICT is being effectively used by the College administrative office for record keeping and maintenance. Records pertaining to the Accounts section and general administration, including the payroll are also digitised. Digital database of the students and the College employees is maintained. All the major house keeping operations of the library are automated. All the departments have the ICT facility and the campus is wi-fi enabled. 6.3 Quality improvement strategies adopted by the institution for each of the following: Curriculum Development The College being affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh follows the curriculum proposed by the University. However, the faculty members contribute constructively towards the process of curriculum development as members of various academic bodies of the university viz. Members of Board of Studies, Added Faculty members etc. The feedback system was streamlined. Course Feedback, Alumni Feedback, Student Support Services Feedback and Student Feedback were obtained covering various aspects of the teaching learning process. A comprehensive Feedback Analysis Report was thereafter prepared with recommendations for overall enhancement of academic quality. The outcomes of the report formed the basis for academic quality enrichment. KHALSA COLLEGE FOR WOMEN AQAR
30 6.3.2 Teaching and Learning In pursuit of its commitment towards imparting quality education, the IQAC cell of the College framed a comprehensive quality policy aimed at quality enhancement and assurance. In pursuance of the quality policy, the College emphasised on adoption of innovative teaching methodologies by the faculty members. Recognising the potential of experiential learning for better understanding and for intellectual and personality development, interactive sessions with experts from industry and the academia along with industrial visits and field trips were organised by various departments of the College. The ICT facility was extended to cover all the departments. This provided the impetus for an augmented adoption of ICT in the teaching learning process. With the objective of implementing an all-inclusive education policy, special initiatives for catering to the diverse learning needs of the slow learners as well as the advanced learners were taken up. A number of skill development workshops were organised by various departments during the summer vacation, under the aegis of Project Sashakt of Triadic Development Programme of the College to enhance the skill set of the students to improve their employability index. Seminars on Job training programmes and Enhancing Communication Skills and Career opportunities were organised by the Placement and Guidance Cell. Workshops like Converting Hobby to Business and Converting Hobby to Entrepreneurship etc were organised to cultivate entrepreneurial skills in the students. The various quality improvement strategies adopted by the College culminated in accomplishment of excellent results by the students across all streams. As many as 75 top ten university positions were clinched by the College students in the session Examination and Evaluation The College implements all the examination and evaluation reforms initiated by Panjab University, Chandigarh, to which the College is affiliated. Comprehensive evaluation of the students is carried out based on summative and formative assessment. Transparency in the evaluation process is ensured. Grievances of the students with respect to the examination and the evaluation process are duly addressed. In a major qualitative reform, the College is gearing up towards implementing the Choice based Credit System (CBCS) from the session as per Panjab University guidelines Research and Development The Research Committee of the College played a proactive role in promotion of research temperament amongst the faculty members. Consequently, there was a substantial increase in the number of research publications as well as in the participation of the faculty in the research oriented activities viz. seminars, conferences etc as compared to the previous years. In a notable accomplishment, two minor research projects were sanctioned by the UGC. Dr Priyaka Khanna was sanctioned Rs. 1, 65, 000/- for her minor research project on Young Consumer s Ecological Behaviour in Ludhiana, while the UGC approved a sum of Rs. 2, 05, 000/- to Mrs Paramjeet Kaur for pursuing research on Management Insomnia. The N-List facility for access to over 63,000 e-journals and e-books was extended to the Network Resource Centre as well as all the Departments of the College. Apart from industrial training and industrial visits, prolific interactions with experts from industrial houses, corporate sector and from the field of academics were organized to foster scientific and research temperament amongst the students. 31 6.3.5 Library, ICT and physical infrastructure / instrumentation The library was further strengthened. 660 new books were procured in the main library. New additions were made to the collections in the departmental libraries. 70 new journals, magazines and newspapers were subscribed. The N-List facility was extended to provide seamless, reliable and ubiquitous access to scholarly, peer reviewed electronic resources. Access to 60,000+ e-journals and 31, 35, 000 e-books were made available through this facility. This facility included access to MathSciNet bibliographic database and e-journals of world renowned publishing houses like American Institute of Physics, Royal Society of Chemistry, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press etc besides a large number of refereed Indian journals. The ICT facility in the College was further extended with procurement of new computers. Four new smart class rooms were created. Two additional projectors were also procured. The labs were upgraded with procurement of new equipments. The infrastructural facilities were further enhanced Human Resource Management The College focuses on strategic human resource management to ensure that the College staff contributes positively to organisational effectiveness as defined by the goals and objectives of the College. For this, following steps are undertaken: Annual requirement analysis of the staff as per the positions and expertise. Selection and recruitment of qualified staff Motivation and facilitation of staff for self-improvement and development Provision of flexibility to staff to adopt approaches directed at realization of the goals and objectives. Following the participatory management concept, the staff is encouraged to participate in the decision making process. Welfare schemes for the staff are executed. Promotion of harmonious relations among the staff and between the governing body and the staff Faculty and Staff recruitment Strategic planning is employed for recruitment of staff as per the requirements. Complete transparency is maintained in the recruitment process. Qualified and meritorious staff is appointed, following the rules and regulations prescribed by the Punjab Government and Panjab University, Chandigarh. KHALSA COLLEGE FOR WOMEN AQAR
32 6.3.8 Industry Interaction / Collaboration As a mechanism of enhancing collaborations with the industry, the College has entered into a number of Memoranda of Understanding with industrial houses, academic and social organizations leading to focus on research as well as academic activities for mutual benefit. Some representative collaborations include: Bebo Technologies, Upper India Steel Ltd, Duke Pvt Ltd, Federation of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings (FICO), Mindmines, IBS (ICFAI), Gurdev Hospital etc. Additionally, in order to give the students firsthand experience on working in the industrial enterprises and promote industry interaction, professionals from the industry are invited for expert lectures on regular basis. Regular industrial visits are also organized. Some of the visits organized during this session included visits to Zapbuild, Pingaksho Technogies, GTech Softwares Ltd, Ralson India Ltd, Sportking India Ltd, Oster Group of Companies, Kingfisher Industries, Hero Cycles Ltd, Central Institute of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET), etc besides a number of other field visits Admission of Students The College caters to the higher education needs of the women of the region. The admissions are carried out as per the schedule and guidelines of Panjab University, Chandigarh. The admission process is widely publicized through the print media, College website, College prospectus etc. Complete transparency is maintained in the admission process. In courses with limited seats, merit lists are prepared as per the guidelines issued by the university. Merit lists and the criteria followed are widely displayed. Admission grievances, if any, are resolved by the Grievances Redressal Committee of the College. Every effort is made to make the admission process student friendly.
