UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY West point, new York Department of English & Philosophy winter newsletter 2013 Inside: YEAR OF PHILOSOPHY Be thou at peace: a final farewell to col john calabro Cadet spotlight: havana schmidt Works-in-progress And More 2013: A YEAR OF PHILOSOPHY This academic year, we celebrate those who love wisdom" by championing our philosophy program. Not only do we teach every cadet in our core philosophy course, we engage a growing number of students in our expanded elective offerings. We also routinely contribute to the Army and academia at large. Our efforts, which we ve detailed below, combine for an exciting academic year for West Point s philosophers. PY201, our flagstone course, acquaints third class cadets to the fundamentals of the discipline. Beside providing a grounding on fundamental philosophic issues, the class gives special attention to the subject of war and morality while reinforcing the critical thinking, creativity, and effective communication at the heart of all our classes. Building upon the foundation provided in PY201, a robust selection of electives, offered to a growing audience of APL majors and cadets from other disciplines, provide specialized study on a broad array of subjects from Logical Reasoning, to Ancient Philosophy, the Philosophy of Religion, and the Ethics of the Military Profession. Beyond educating cadets inside the classroom, the philosophy faculty continue to engage the operational Army and the larger academic community. Philosophy faculty meet with COL Jeffrey Peterson, interim Director at the Center for the Army Profession and Ethic, to discuss future projects and collaboration. Collaboration with the CAPE enables the philosophy faculty to pursue service and scholarship opportunities while contributing to the Army profession. Outside the classroom, our philosophy faculty routinely contribute to the Army profession. Our work with the Center for the Army Profession and Ethic (CAPE) has significantly contributed to both emerging Army doctrine and discourse within the Army community. For example, our faculty participated in the writing and review of both the CSA s White Paper on the Army Profession (2011) and foundational Army doctrinal references. As a follow-on to this work, in July of this year, philosophy faculty members completed the initial analysis for the Army-level mission to fully articulate and promulgate the Army Ethic. Our department will continue to provide expertise, leadership, and members for this project as it moves forward as a CAPE priority. Our work with the CAPE is a win win situation for both organizations, said LTC Brian Imiola, the department s liaison to the CAPE. Collaborative efforts with the CAPE allow us to bring the expertise of our faculty in Ethics and Just War to bear in contributing to the Army Profession, while providing opportunities for service and scholarship. Importantly, our CAPE related projects are often very relevant to our teaching and cadet learning in our core and elective courses.

2 2013: A YEAR OF PHILOSOPHY (CONTINUED) Professor Robert Tully, Dr Graham Parsons and LTC Brian Imiola mentor Cadets Havanna Schmidt and John Jesus as part of the capstone experience in the philosophy major. Our Philosophy faculty have also contributed to and shaped academic discourse on the Professional Military Ethic and Just War Theory within the wider academic community. For example, philosophy faculty members have played a key role in the International Symposium for Military Ethics (ISME), the premier organization for the study of military ethics in the world; ISME has recently spun off a European affiliate, with Latin American and Australasian affiliates soon to follow. For the past three years, Dr. Richard Schoonhoven has served as the Program Chair for the society s annual conference, which just this year has found a new home at the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Schoonhoven describes the conference as going from strength to strength and asserts the new partnership with Notre Dame will work greatly to the advantage of both institutions. This year s theme centered upon Military Virtues and Contemporary Challenges ; papers by four of our faculty members were selected for presentation. Besides ISME, our faculty has, or will participate, in numerous academic conferences this year focused on professional military ethics. These conferences include the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society; the US Army s Command and General Staff College s Ethics Conference; and the 17 th Hwarangdae International Symposium on Military Ethics in South Korea. Of course, our primary focus is upon cadet development, and important outreach activities outside the classroom spotlight the development of future military officers. This past summer, MAJ Ian Fishback organized an AIAD for West Point cadets with scholars and students from both Georgetown and Rutgers that examined the normative aspects of war and served as a precursor for an interdisciplinary APL elective being taught this semester that not only includes APL majors, but cadets who major in Defense and Security Studies, Social Sciences, and Law. Besides building and strengthening ties with other academic institutions that do significant work in Just War Theory, the AIAD provided cadets a superb opportunity to strengthen their understanding of civil-military relationships. Looking ahead to next semester, our philosophy faculty will co-host a Just War Theory undergraduate conference with Villanova College. The conference will include top thinkers in the field, among them are Jeffrey McMahan of Rutgers; David Rodin of Oxford; and Nancy Sherman and David Luban of Georgetown. Cadet Havana Schmidt, 14, presents distinguished Georgetown Professor Nancy Sherman with a Cadet Tar Bucket hat as a token of appreciation for her time and effort. Professor Sherman delivered a presentation to the Cadet Philosophy Forum titled The Role of Trust in Moral Injury and Moral Recovery.

PHILOSOPHY IN THE LAST DECADE: For many generations of cadets, including many of the Academy s current leaders, Philosophy was simply the name of a single course on the ethics of a Just War (a core course which continues as PY201). But times have changed., developments over the past ten years have seen the academic discipline of Philosophy contribute a rich and an active program of elective courses within the APL major. We aim to increase the presence of philosophy at West Point in the next few years in cooperation with other departments and by the strategic cross-listing of elective courses. We will model this effort on the present arrangement whereby the Department of Law lists EP359 Logical Reasoning and EP365 Ethics of the Military Profession for credit towards its own major, just as DEP recognizes Law s course on jurisprudence as appropriate for the APL Philosophy track. Such initiatives help show that the discipline has become established at West Point, with much to contribute to the education of future Army officers. In the last decade the discipline of philosophy has also grown in prominence at West Point. The official renaming of our department in 2009, as the Department of English and Philosophy, symbolizes the significant changes which have been taking place in the APL major during the past decade. Courses in Literature and Philosophy were first organized into parallel tracks, each with a required methodology course. In keeping with common practice in North American Philosophy programs, we revised and classified existing courses into two categories: history and chief sub-disciplines. Courses in the history of philosophy include Ancient, 17 th & 18 th Century, and 20 th Century Philosophy, while the sub-disciplines include a variety of course selections such as Metaphysics, Political Philosophy, and Philosophy of Science. To gauge the range and depth of the track, the Department s Philosophy faculty then benchmarked its program against more than twenty philosophy majors in U.S. colleges and universities. Now, an increase in the number of philosophy electives match those in the Literature track. Additionally, our the Senior Seminar provides a rich capstone experience for firstie philosophers and our new Special Topics and Individual Studies course titles increase flexibility, breadth and depth for both faculty and students. A collaborative project with Bard College in 2012 on the nature of a Just War represents just one noteworthy example of the advantage of having the revised Special Topics course. The project took the form of parallel seminars at West Point and at Bard, four special joint sessions that brought the students together from both seminars, and a professional academic conference at Bard. During these seminars, distinguished philosophers presented invited papers on Just War in classical, religious, philosophical and legal traditions. The West Point seminar comprised faculty and cadets from the departments of English and Philosophy, Law, and Social Sciences. Following this success, a further joint project with Bard on the nature of intolerance is planned for A strengthening philosophy program leverages cooperation with other departments at West Point as represented in this spring 2012 photo of COL Donna Brazil, formerly of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership, in LTC Chris Mayer s EP373 Topics in Ethics.

4 Hello! The summer and fall terms have been filled with excitement and rewarding activities both in and out of the classroom. Unfortunately, not all of the news has been good, and I am saddened to report the passing of COL(R) John Calabro. John Calabro was an inspirational teacher and mentor who inspired thousands of cadets and colleagues in the department. As a member and friend of the department for decades, he taught and directed courses in writing and literature. After 30 years of military service, he retired having attained the academic rank of Professor. But John loved to teach and continued to inspire cadets in EN302, which he taught on a voluntary basis. Early this year, BG Trainor publicly recognized John for his continued efforts teaching and inspiring the Corps of Cadets. And over the summer, the academic board promoted John to Professor Emeritus - a first in departmental history. So while our thoughts are with his wife Angela and sons Jac and Tony, we are thankful to have served alongside such an excellent teacher and continue to commemorate the life of John Calabro. This year we celebrate the strength of our philosophy program. In 2009, we officially renamed ourselves the Department of English and Philosophy denoting the significant changes taking place in the APL major during the past few years. Over the past decade the academic discipline of Philosophy has contributed a rich and an active program of elective courses within the APL major. We aim to increase the discipline s presence at West Point in the next few years by cross-listing our elective courses with other interested departments, by the strategic cross-listing of elective courses. As well, our philosophers continue to build upon their outreach assisting the Army to shape future doctrine. I am excited to report that we have added 33 new APL majors from the class of the second highest total in departmental history. These new majors will benefit from FROM THE DEPARTMENT HEAD paths blazed by current APL majors, such as CDT Havanna Schmidt, 14, selected as the first ever Brigade Representative for the grassroots organization, Cadets Against Sexual Harassment and Assault. Former APL majors, such as CPT Anthony Fuscellaro, 05 continue to excel as leaders in the operational Army. The Association of Graduates presented this year s Nininger Award to CPT Fuscellaro as an exemplar of heroic action in battle. This summer, we welcomed a fresh class of Faculty members and administrative colleagues. Our newest Academy Professor, LTC Dave Harper helped welcome our new civilian professors Drs Betsy Chunko and Mary Anne Meyers; returning military instructors LTCs Naomi Mercer, Tom Veale and Jessie Zuck; and first time rotating faculty members MAJs Paul de Leon, CPTs Andrew Marsh and Saythala Phonexayphova during this summer s Arriving Faculty Workshop (AFW). Soojin Rademacher and Jean Talman have also joined our committed and professional administrative staff. The faculty in our department continually strive to be excellent teachers both in and out of the classroom. In July and August, our faculty developed the leadership and navigational skills of over 1450 cadets during Cadet Field Training and led cadets on diverse enrichment programs crafted to inspire reflection and to develop critical and creative thinking. Since her return from sabbatical, Professor Samet has revamped our Works-in-Progress Colloquium, a broadly inclusive departmental endeavor, offering both cadets and faculty a forum to present research and draft articles to an audience of colleagues from across the Academy. We also opened West Point s new Writing Center in Jefferson Hall where our Cadet Writing Fellows assist EN101 students wanting to improve their thinking and expression. While we remain committed to inspiring cadet excellence, taking a well deserved break remains important. I hope everyone enjoyed a festive and rewarding holiday season and was able to reconnect with family and friends. Happy New Year! 5 5 IN MEMORIAM: COLONEL JOHN CALABRO The bustling West Point summer came to an abrupt pause on 18 July, as the entire USMA community gathered to mourn the sudden loss of COL John A. Calabro, Jr. The memorial service in the Cadet Chapel drew family members, friends, and colleagues from every corner of John s life. A Renaissance man of the first rate, John was an accomplished painter. One of his colleagues recently boasted that one of Colonel Calabro s paintings still hangs in his living room. He served on the Putnam County Historical Board and worked to establish the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor. Indeed, John s service to constituencies far beyond the classroom stands as an important piece of his legacy. Remember thee? / Ay while memory holds a seat / In this distracted globe (Ham ). (Photo courtesy of West Point AOG) John Calabro was born on 14 January After graduating from Xavier High School, he arrived at West Point. John coped with the often severe cadet regimen with humor, penning satirical work for The Pointer. He graduated from West Point in 1968 and commissioned into the field artillery. Colonel Calabro spent much of his career overseas, with several combat deployments to Vietnam and two Cold-War tours in West Germany. Fortunately, John was selected to return to West Point, and he served in the Department of English for nearly 20 total years. In the course of his scholarly career, he earned an MA from Columbia University and a PhD from the University of Virginia, and he went on to achieve the academic rank of full professor. After retiring from a thirty-year Army career, John continued teaching, and he became the first Professor Emeritus in the history of the Department of English and Philosophy. On 9 July 2013, Colonel Calabro passed away suddenly. He is survived by his wife, Angela, and his sons, Tony and Jac, along with countless nieces, nephews, and cousins. The entire Department of English and Philosophy, our alumni, and our students all share in the Calabro family s loss. The West Point Association of Graduates has established an online memorial for Colonel Calabro. We encourage all of you to visit the following site and consider sharing your favorite stories of John: Memorials/Article/27541/ BG Trainor, the Dean of the Academic Board, presents Professor Emeritus John A. Calabro with a coin in appreciation of COL Calabro s voluntary work, teaching cadets in EN302. Upon receiving the recognition John humbly replied, Thank you. It is the best thing I do

6 CADET SPOTLIGHT: HAVANA SCHMIDT APL Major Havana Schmidt (Class of 2014) is serving as the first ever Brigade Representative for the grassroots organization, Cadets Against Sexual Harassment and Assault, referred to as CASH/A. She became SHARP-qualified over the summer and was part of a small group of cadets who developed the comprehensive SHARP training and education plan for the current academic year. On the import of her charge and challenges ahead, Havana realized I am very passionate about the SHARP mission, and as the summer progressed and I was named the CASH/A Rep for the brigade, I realized there was a lot of work to be done in my job. There are a lot of things about SHARP that work, but with a good philosophical examination, could be better. As a member of the APL Honors Program, she originally started out writing her senior thesis on the Civil-Military Gap. However, as she became more involved with SHARP and CASH/A, Havana recognized that she wanted to combine theory with practice. Working with her advisor, she modified her thesis project so that it focuses upon theoretical grounding of the CASH/A mission; it is now a terrific blend of her academic year duty position and academic discipline. Her thesis and work is now focused on a philosophical investigation of Army programs designed to stop sexual assault and harassment. APL Major, Cadet Havana Schmidt, 14 Havana became interested in philosophy when she took PY201 in her yearling year. She recalls leaning towards History, but the breadth of topics and deeper questions of philosophy eventually swayed [her] to major APL, Philosophy track. [She] loved how PY201 challenged [her] views and take a hard look at [her] convictions. Over the last couple of years, [she has] developed a personal philosophy, and can articulate [her] thoughts better than ever. Havana enjoys the rigorous discussion and academic freedom, as well as the personal nature of the Department; she avows that majoring in philosophy has definitely been one of my best decisions at the Academy. Havana comes from Texas ranching families and is the oldest of four children. In addition to her CASH/A position, she is an active member of the film crew for the Army Football Team, the Cadet Philosophy Forum, the Ethics Debate team, and the Baptist Student Union NININGER AWARD Captain Anthony Fuscellaro, USMA 05 (pictured left) is this year s Nininger Award recipient. The Association of Graduates presents this Award to an exemplar of heroic action in battle. During his acceptance speech, CPT Fuscellaro recounted a challenging combat scenario in Afghanistan, one for which he was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross. After concluding his account, CPT Fuscellaro left his audience with the following advice: My point in telling you this story is that there was no clear course of action, and still we were forced to make a decision based on our adapting tactics, assessing the enemy s tendencies, and, above all, making an imperfect and rapid risk analysis. You will face difficult spontaneous decisions too, in this war or the next. When you do, trust your judgment, your critical thinking abilities, and rely on your training. CPT Fuscellaro s ability to cope with ambiguity under the most challenging circumstances serves as an outstanding model for all aspiring junior officers. We are proud to count the 2013 Nininger Award winner among our

7 AIADS: A SUMMER OF POSSIBILITIES The West Point Department of English and Philosophy offered cadets some particularly exciting Advanced Academic Individual Development trips (AIADs) during the summer of These summer excursions offer cadets a unique opportunity for growth outside the classroom and enhance the Academy s reputation as a leader in liberal arts education. Whether they explored the literature of nature, Just War Theory, or creative and critical thinking strategies, seventeen cadets created lasting memories on these tailored developmental expeditions. MAJ Ian Fishback with Cadets, students and Faculty at Rutgers University Five cadets accompanied MAJ Charlie Markley and CPT Barrett Ward on a literary exploration entitled Encountering Indigenous Cultures through Nature and the Humanities. Exploring natural and indigenous literature from Walden Pond, and Alaska, the program culminated with a three day hike through the Alaskan backcountry. The cadets challenged themselves, and each other, through intense intellectual conversation and rigorous hiking while they interrogated man s interaction with nature. Later, cadets completed essays with potential for further development and publishing. Seven cadets completed two interdisciplinary AIADs on morality and law in war. A June enrichment at Rutgers University focused on jus ad bellum (justice of war) and a July AIAD at Georgetown University focused on jus in bello (justice in war). Through these studies, cadets learned about humanitarian intervention, preventive war, combatancy status, targeted killing, torture, and civilian immunity all from the world's foremost scholars, lawyers, policy makers, and practitioners. At the AIADs conclusion, each cadet wrote a 15 paper proposal for further development throughout their cadet careers. MAJ Harry Jones led a group of five cadets to sixteen of the most prestigious and creative institutions along the eastern seaboard. The purpose of this AIAD was to conduct field research on behalf of the USMA Critical Thinking and Creativity goal team in order to provide recommendations as to how USMA might better meet the academic goal that graduates think critically and creatively and graduate more creative, innovative leaders. The Department of English and Philosophy is pleased to have offered such diverse and intriguing opportunities and looks forward to resourcing enriching AIADs for Cadets hike to the Savage River Valley in Denali, Alaska MAJ Harry Jones with Cadets from the Operationalizing Creativity AIAD

8 After getting lost in excellent literature during the academic year, some DEP faculty shifted their focus to helping cadets find their way outside the classroom. For the fifth year in a row, DEP faculty formed the core of the land navigation committee in support of Cadet Field Training (CFT). Eight members of the Department, augmented by five newly commissioned Lieutenants, conducted land navigation training and leadership development for the classes of 2014 and 2015 and oversaw the training for the class of The training event consisted of site orientation and initial training, a confidence course, a short night course, and a long day course. Between June and July, the Land Navigation Committee trained over 1450 cadets from the classes of The terrain on the land navigation course is challenging and successful completion of progressive events requires situational awareness and an eye for intelligent risk taking during the individual planning and execution phases. Trainers and cadet cadre not only demonstrated adaptive and creative thinking during their instruction and terrain walks, but also reviewed individual route plans to ensure safety remained a priority while also reinforcing the fundamentals of land navigation. Despite Heat Cat V temperatures for five consecutive days during the training, there were no heat injuries during the land navigation training events. Overall, the training allowed cadets to develop as both navigators and as leaders. LAND NAVIGATION Department of English and Philosophy instructors formed the backbone of the Cadet Field Training Land Navigation Committee. Faculty members harnessed their military expertise to hone the navigation skills and leadership abilities of over 1450 cadets. Cadets scan their electronic punch cards to start the Day 2 Long Course. Cadets scanned their e-punch cards when they found their points on the courses. Cadets were also issued a GPS and SMS tracker that allowed cadre and trainers to monitor their movement in real-time and facilitate after action reviews following the events. Cadets from the class of 2015 conduct initial after-action reviews with cadets from the class of Upon completing the courses, trainees met with their squad leaders to map out the routes they believed they took to get to their points. Immediately after reviewing their perceived route with their squad leaders, trainees had an opportunity to see their actual route based on data uploaded from an issued GPS tracker.

9 WORKS-IN-PROGRESS COLLOQUIUM LTC Molin presents his work-in-progress This semester, we are excited to witness the reinvigoration of the department s Works-in-Progress Colloquium designed to foster the sharing of work across fields and disciplines. W-I-P, as it has come to be called, is a broadly inclusive departmental endeavor offering students and faculty alike an opportunity to present research, rehearse conference papers, and present to an audience of colleagues from across the Academy. These events often prove intellectually stimulating; and they provide a chance for all of us to better know our colleagues and to see the exciting and occasionally unexpected directions their scholarship has taken. This valuable forum has also proven quite helpful for the presenters in the process of revising and refining their work. LTC Peter Molin kicked off the first meeting of the Works in Progress Colloquium on 19 September with his presentation titled A Phrase Too Cute to Do Our Ugliness Justice : Wounded Warriors in Siobhana Fallon s The Last Stand and Brian Van Reet s Big Two- Hearted Hunting Creek. Inspired by representations of disabled veterans in Iraq and Afghanistan war fiction, it provided an auspicious launch for the reemergence of this exciting program. On 21 November, MAJ Ian Fishback presented his work titled The Proportionality Omission in the Ethics of Self- and Other-Defense. The forum provided MAJ Fishback an opportunity to present and revise a writing sample that he plans on using to apply to PhD programs. LTC Molin fields questions from the audience The first two meetings of the Works-in- Progress Colloquium provided an invigorating start to what promises to be an exciting series. We have a robust slate of presenters lined up for the rest of the year including faculty from both English and Philosophy, and a cadet panel in the spring. More information regarding the WIP Colloquium and the calendar of future WIP presentations can be found at MAJ Fishback presents his work-in-progress

VASSAR INITIATIVE 10 West Point cadets and Vassar students at Vassar, September 2013 The Mellon Foundation West Point-Vassar Initiative, for which the Department of English and Philosophy has the USMA lead, promotes collaborative exchanges between West Point and Vassar College. Since the spring of 2012, the Initiative has staged twelve events bringing cadets to Vassar and Vassar students to West Point to learn about each other s lives, values, and perspectives. Designed to bridge the civil-military divide, the Initiative has received enthusiastic reviews from cadets and Vassar students, as well as from faculty and leadership at each institution. The fall events opened with a two-day trip section in September by twenty-five cadets to Vassar to view a photographic exhibit honoring the 50 th - anniversary of the historic Civil Rights Movement March on Washington. Besides viewing the exhibit and attending a lecture and panel discussion featuring civil rights movement scholars and veterans of the March, cadets participated in a workshop exploring race relations, social progress, and the military. USMA Department of History Head COL Ty Seidule presented on the Black Power Movement at West Point in the 1970s, while Dr. Maria Hoehn of Vassar s history department discussed her work on race relations in Germany within the US Army and with the German populace. West Point returned to Vassar in November to view Theater of War, a dramatic reading of the classic Greek play Ajax, by Sophocles; it portrays the emotional cost of war on soldiers and their families. Participants on this trip section included cadets from the Cadet Fine Arts Philosophy Forum and a Department of Behavioral Science & Leadership course on military social issues. Following the reading, cadets participated in a panel discussion and audience Q&A featuring veterans and mental health professionals. They then continued the discussion at a reception with Vassar student counterparts. Later in November, fifteen Vassar students visited West Point to participate in a day-in-the-life of a cadet. Besides eating in the Cadet Mess Hall and attending classes, Vassar students were offered a chance to fire mock weapons at the Engagement Skills Trainer simulated range and run the Indoor Obstacle Course. After over-nighting in the cadet barracks, the Vassar contingent were joined by 30 more Vassar students and faculty who together attended the Army-Western Kentucky football game. Among them were 11 ex-service members now attending Vassar on full scholarships, proof of Vassar s commitment to the Army and the military. West Point cadets, Vassar students, Dr. Maria Hoehn of Vassar and LTC Peter Molin of DEP at Theater of War at Vassar, November 2013 In only two years since its inception, the West Point-Vassar Initiative has assumed a prominent place in the life of the Department, USMA, and Vassar, too. Planning continues for a series of vibrant collaborative events in the coming semester.

COL Scott Krawczyk and Dr. Jason Hoppe, the Director of the Writing Fellows Program and Writing Center, hosted a small reception for invited guests and faculty before conducting the ceremonial ribbon cutting. Flanked by the Center s cadet Writing Fellows, COL Krawczyk and Dr. Hoppe officially opened the center for business before an audience of invited guests from the USMA Library, the Center for Enhanced Performance, and academy faculty. On opening night, the WPWC Fellows met with eight cadet clients, all enrolled in EN101. Client feedback reinforced the Center s immediate impact. Representative of the overwhelmingly positive feedback received after each session, one plebe noted her Fellow really helped me to generate and sort my ideas, despite how flustered I felt initially. She also helped me come up with various strategies to take with me as I wrote the drafts of my essays and refined my argument and thesis. This appointment definitely provided me with valuable skills that I will take with me into future assignments.
