5 Institute III OVERVIEW The Institute at the will focus on the theme of positioning, reflecting on the recent institutional re-structuring and re-alignment of programs and infrastructure. The Libraries concurrent positioning efforts have promoted active engagement with teaching/learning and research, while addressing emergent themes of undergraduate learning competencies and interdisciplinary and collaborative scholarship. The Institute will highlight the interplay of institutional and Libraries planning as well as strategic processes to align resources with priorities. As a key ingredient in strategic positioning for research libraries, collaboration and collective action will be explored at the state, regional, and national levels. Monday: Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday: Welcome and overview of institutional context. Dinner and conversation with President Robert Bruininks at Eastcliff, president s residence Discussion with Senior VP for Academic Affairs and Provost on academic positioning; overview of two extensive behavioral analyses of researcher behavior to explore interdisciplinary methodologies and challenges of information discovery/management; discussion with Senior VP for Health Sciences on interdisciplinary initiatives. Dinner in Dinkytown (campus area) at Loring Pasta Bar (casual attire) Overview of process improvement initiatives in collection development and technical services; explore use of consultants in organization development. Presentation on archives and special collections from perspectives of facility design and public programming. Tour of Elmer L. Andersen Library for Archives and Special Collections and underground caverns. Free evening (will provide ideas for what to do/ where to go) Program development to support/enhance the undergraduate experience. Lunch conversation about diversity initiatives. Overview of digital development strategy using component-based approach to information infrastructure. Using several project contexts, explore iterative design process of digital systems and tools. Dinner at Guthrie Theater, including conversation with Guthrie librarian and dramaturg and University Libraries Performing Arts Curator. Explore research library collaborations at state, regional, and national levels. Presentations on MINITEX (state-based enterprise), Committee on Institutional Cooperation ( Big 10 ), and Canadian initiatives.
