3 MEN S TENNIS Season Outlook Bob Batman Men s Head Coach (12TH SEASON) Villanova head coach Bob Batman enters his 12th season at the helm of the Wildcats men s tennis team. He also has served as the Director of Villanova Tennis for the past eight seasons. For his career, Batman has compiled an impressive overall record on the Main Line. Batman has six veterans returning for the season as the Wildcats look to build upon their 5-15 mark from one year ago. Prior to his arrival at Villanova, Batman coached the men s and women s tennis teams at the University of the Redlands in Redlands, Calif. During his stint at the Redlands, Batman coached the men s team to the Division III national championship and a final ranking of No. 8 in the nation. He also helped lead the women s team to their first-ever national ranking (No. 25), and their No. 1 singles player to the national semifinals. Batman has also spent time as an instructor, teaching tennis around the world. He served as a resident tennis professional at the famous Vic Braden Tennis College at Cato de Caza Resort in California, as Director of Tennis at Camp Walt Whitman in New Hampshire, and as the head tennis pro at the Gottingen Tennis Center in Gottingen, West Germany. Presently, Batman is the Director of Tennis for the Martins Dam Tennis and Swim Club in Wayne, Pa. A former Navy fighter pilot, Batman is a graduate of Fairmont State College, where he earned his bachelor s degree in business administration. Batman also has a master s degree in education counseling from the University of the Redlands Wildcat Roster NAME YR. HOMETOWN/HIGH SCHOOL Diego Alvarado Fr. Wilmette, Ill./New Trier Director of Tennis: Bob Batman Associate Head Coach: Steve Reiniger Captains: Aaron Kusza, Ricardo Baraldi Blending the old (senior experience) with the new (freshmen youth) will be the calling of the 2004/05 season. The returning four seniors, led by last years numbers 1, 3 and 4 singles players Aaron Kusza, Ricardo Baraldi and Angel Rubio, along with part-time starter Sean Gallagher, will have the challenge of incorporating freshmen onto a roster devoid of sophomores and juniors. How these seniors control this unique situation will go a long way in determining the success of the 2004/05 team. Hopefully, the depth of talent of this year s freshman class will provide a positive transition, as well as create a solid base for the future. Coach Batman says, On paper, the number of quality freshmen coming in this year, appears to be the best in my twelve years on the Main Line. Because of this situation, the freshmen will have their own challenge in adapting to this singular challenge. This group includes Diego Alvarado, Dimitri Chimerakis, Scott Fahrendorf, Charlie Farmer Jorge Rodriguez and Tony Soruco. The loss to graduation of John Toppel and Lucas Kaster will show most notably in the doubles lineup. There will be ample opportunity for playing time for those willing to contribute in this important role. The unmatched situation of the unknown and unproven, should not keep this team from competing for a spot in the Big East Tournament in April Results DATE TEAM SCORE DATE TEAM SCORE Millersville 7-0 W North Carolina 0-7 L Fordham 7-0 W Maryland 0-7 L 9/23 LASALLE 7-0 W Pt. Easing that burden is the return of the top three singles players, Sophomore Candice Carlin, Melissa Reed and Courtney Flezzani. Coming off a stellar freshman campaign at #1 singles and doubles, Candice Carlin will be counted on to continue to improve on her past success. The first full year of competition for Melissa Reed and seasoned three year starter Courtney Flezzani will further enhance the optimism for 2004/05. Sophomore Leighann Reilly contributed significantly as a freshman and can be expected to make a positive move up in the lineup. Morgan Flezzani, Junior Lindsey Puchyr and Sophomore Taryn Cappellini should all vie for playing time this year. Incoming freshman Colleen Speaker looks to contribute immediately. Fellow freshmen Katie Fleszar and Zoe Murray should add further depth to this years lineup. The biggest task will be in doubles. The loss of last years seniors causes a real scramble for experienced doubles combinations. Coach Reiniger says, How this team adjusts to the needs and abilities in doubles will be the determining factor in achieving our team goals Results DATE TEAM SCORE DATE TEAM SCORE 9/11 LASALLE 7-0 W 2/13 vs. Richmond 0-7 L 9/13 FORDHAM 7-0 W Pt.
