It is the second trip to the national tournament for Zacherl and the first for Gromacki. Clarion sends multiple wrestlers to the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row, two years after not sending any wrestlers for the first time since the The Golden Eagles have sent multiple wrestlers in eight of the last nine years, and has only failed to send competitors to the tournament twice in the last 50 years. Bicentennial Men Gromacki and Zacherl hold something of an interesting distinction, as they are the 199th and 200th individual Clarion wrestlers to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Meet the Coach Clarion is under the direction of third-year head coach Keith Ferraro, who took over full-time duties during the season. Before that he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under head coach Troy Letters. His work in rebuilding the program over the years cannot be overstated; last season the Golden Eagles had two individual EWL champions for the first time since 2012, as well as a pair of NCAA qualifiers. Proud History Clarion wrestling enjoys a long, proud history, both on the regional and national levels. The Golden Eagles have produced eight national champions and 38 All-Americans throughout history. Two of those national champions were recognized on the NWCA/ NCAA 75th Anniversity All-Time Collegiate Team in Kurt Angle ( ) and Wade Schalles ( ). In addition, former head coach Bob Bubb was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2005 after a 26-year coaching career that ended in 1992 with 322 career dual wins and a seven individual national champions. Bubb also served as the Secretary Rules Editor of NCAA wrestling from , Executive Director of the NWCA from , and Chair of the NCAA Wrestling Committee from That 70 s Team Clarion wrestling first rose to national prominence in the early 1970 s, when the Golden Eagles combined for five individual titles in two years. Gary Barton and Wade Schalles won individual titles in 1972, while the trio of Schalles, Don Rohn and Bill Simpson all won in Barton s title in 1972 was significant in that he entered the bracket as an unseeded entry and proceeded to defeat the #1, #2, #4 and #5 seeded entries in the 134-pound bracket to claim the national championship. It s often cited as one of the more impressive performances in NCAA history. EWL s Recap The Golden Eagles finished fourth out of seven teams at the 2017 EWL Championships hosted by Bloomsburg. Seven of the 10 Clarion wrestlers advanced to the semifinals and three were finalists, the greatest number of finalists for the Golden Eagles since the championships. Jake Gromacki (125) and Brock Zacherl (141) both punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships with their runner-up finishes, while Dustin Conti (197) came up just one win shy as the runner-up in his weight class. Evan Delong finished third at 165 pounds. Meet Me in St. Louis It s been just two years since the NCAA Championships were in St. Louis, but it s been five years since the Golden Eagles competed in the Gateway to the West. The last time they were there, though, they saw a pair of wrestlers earn All-American status. Bekzod Abdurakhmonov (3rd) and James Fleming (5th) both placed at the 2012 Championships. Setting Precedent It s been a while since Clarion has seen either a 125- or 141-pounder earn All-American status, which is the opportunity presented to both Jake Gromacki and Brock Zacherl this year. The last 141-pounder to place at the NCAA Championships is Mark Angle, who did it back-to-back in Angle also won the title when it was still the 134-pound weight class in Gromacki has the chance to set an ever greater precedent, as no Clarion wrestler has placed in his weight class since it was bumped to 125 pounds years ago. Sheldon Thomas placed twice and won an individual title at 118 pounds in the 1990 s, and Erik Burnett placed at 118 pounds in Clarion vs. The FIeld Jake Gromacki went 3-4 against members of the 125-pound field at this year s championships, though two of those losses were to the same person, Sean Russell (Edinboro). He picked up wins against Ibrahim Bunduka (George Mason), Shakur Laney (Ohio) and Noah Gonser (Eastern MIchigan). Brock Zacherl is 5-3 against the members of the 141-pound field at this year s championships, including wins over Noah Forrider (Ohio), Javier Gasca III (Michigan State), Joshua Heil (Campbell), and a pair over Ronnie Perry (Lock Haven). All-Star Not included in Brock Zacherl s season record but important all the same was his participation in the NWCA All-Star Classic in Cleveland at the start of the season. Zacherl fell in a tight 4-3 decision to Virginia s George DiCamillo, who is also in the tournament field this year. Zacherl returned to Clarion the next day and won the 141-pound bracket at the Clarion Open, defeating Ronnie Perry in the finals.

3 KEITH FERRARO Lock Haven, 2003 Third Year Dual Match Record Four (4) NCAA Qualifiers Keith Ferraro, a native of Brookville, begins his third year as Clarion s head wrestling coach. He was named head coach on December 16, 2014, after serving as interim head coach on September 25th. He is only the eighth head wrestling coach in school history. In 2016 the Golden Eagles showed improvement in all facets during Ferraro s second season, improving by six wins in dual match play and seeing the team s first EWL individual champions in several years. Brock Zacherl (141) and Michael Pavasko (174) claimed titles in their respective weight classes at the EWL Championships, the first time multiple Clarion wrestlers won at the event since 2012, and both qualified for the NCAA Championships. Ferraro was named Clarion s assistant coach on July 31, 2012 under Troy Letters and he continued in that role until being named interim coach in September of The Recruiting Coordinator since his arrival, he was a major part of the highly rated Golden Eagle recruiting class for which was rated 9th in NCAA Division I by AWN/Open Mat and 15th by Flo Wrestling. Ferraro, the son of legendary Brookville Head Wrestling coach Lenny Ferraro, who was posthumously inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2011, is a 1999 Brookville High graduate. He wrestled nearly three years for his father before his passing, and then finished his junior and then senior year under head coach Thad Turner. At Brookville Ferraro was a three-time district champion and was part of the 1999 Brookville High School Dual Meet State Championship Team. Ferraro went on to attend Lock Haven University, was part of the wrestling program for four seasons ( ) and graduated in December of 2003 with a degree in Health and Physical Education. A volunteer coach at Central Mountain in the seasons of 2003 and 2004, Ferraro was the head coach at Brockway in the 2005 season, then took a position to teach at Brookville High School and became the assistant coach under Dave Klepfer since In the season Brookville advanced 13 wrestlers to regionals, 5 to the PIAA Championships and as a team placed fourth in the state dual meet championships. Ferraro and wife Meghan reside in Brookville. They have three children - sons Lenny and Vincent, and a daughter Lillian. KYLE KISS North Carolina, 2012 Kyle Kiss, a former assistant coach and wrestler at North Carolina, returns for his second season as an assistant coach with the Golden Eagles in Kiss has been an essential part of the rebuilding effort at Clarion, leading the Golden Eagles recruiting efforts under head coach Keith Ferraro. Each of the last two recruiting classes at Clarion have been ranked in the top 25 nationally by FloWrestling. The grapplers on the mat have benefited from Kiss s presence as well. Clarion had a pair of NCAA qualifiers in 2016, 141-pounder Brock Zacherl and 174-pounder Michael Pavasko, and claimed dual meet wins over a pair of nationally-ranked opponents at home. Before coming to Clarion, Kiss was an assistant coach at North Carolina from While at UNC Kiss worked closely with the middle weights and coached five national qualifiers, including All-American 165-pounder Ethan Ramos. A native of Loch Arbour, N.J. and a 2007 graduate of Ocean Township High, Kiss was a four-time New Jersey state placewinner. He was a two-time Beast of the East finalist and was also a state finalist as a senior. In 2007 Kiss moved on to wrestle for the Tar Heels, where he enjoyed a decorated career on the mat. He was a three-time ACC placewinner for UNC that was twice ranked in the top 20 nationally, in the 2010 and 2012 seasons. He graduated from UNC in 2012 with a B.S. in Exercise and Sports Science. JOE DeANGELO North Carolina State, 2015 Joe DeAngelo enters his first year as a volunteer assistant with the Clarion wrestling team, one year after serving in the same capacity at Hofstra. DeAngelo spent the last year as an assistant for the Pride, helping coach Jamel Hudson and Michael Hughes to bids in the NCAA Championships in New York City in March. The pair both advanced to the second day of the Championships by winning in wrestlebacks. A 2015 graduate of North Carolina State University with a degree in Religious Studies, DeAngelo earned NCAA Wrestling Championship bids in 2013 and 2015 for the Wolfpack. He placed fifth in the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships to earn an automatic berth and then placed fourth in the 2015 ACC Championship to receive an at-large bid. DeAngelo, who was selected the Wolfpack s team captain in , was named the North Carolina State Most Valuable Wrestler after joining the team at mid-season in 2013, the Wolfpack s Redshirt of the Year in 2014 after recording a 27-4 and placing no lower than third in all seven open tournaments, and was selected ACC Wrestler of the Week in February, 2015 after posting two victories over nationally-ranked opponents.
