2 The Match Four Clarion wrestlers will make their ways to Cleveland seeking glory, as the Golden Eagles take part in the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. This year s event is being held at Quicken Loans Arena from March Schedule of Events Thursday, March p.m. - Session 1 7 p.m. - Session 2 Friday, March a.m. - Session 3 8 p.m. - Session 4 Saturday, March a.m. - Session 5 7:35 p.m. - Parade of All-Americans 8 p.m. - Session 6 Proud History Clarion wrestling enjoys a long, proud history, both on the regional and national levels. The Golden Eagles have produced eight national champions and 45 All-Americans throughout history. Two of those national champions were recognized on the NWCA/NCAA 75th Anniversity All-Time Collegiate Team in Kurt Angle ( ) and Wade Schalles ( ). In addition, former head coach Bob Bubb was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2005 after a 26-year coaching career that ended in 1992 with 322 career dual wins and a seven individual national champions. Bubb also served as the Secretary Rules Editor of NCAA wrestling from , Executive Director of the NWCA from , and Chair of the NCAA Wrestling Committee from That 70 s Team Clarion wrestling first rose to national prominence in the early 1970 s, when the Golden Eagles combined for five individual titles in two years. Gary Barton and Wade Schalles won individual titles in 1972, while the trio of Schalles, Don Rohn and Bill Simpson all won in Barton s title in 1972 was significant in that he entered the bracket as an unseeded entry and proceeded to defeat the #1, #2, #4 and #5 seeded entries in the 134-pound bracket to claim the national championship. It s often cited as one of the more impressive performances in NCAA history. Even Up It may just be a coincidence, but over the last several years Clarion has only had EWL champions in even years. James Fleming and Bekzod Abdurakhmonov won titles in 2012, followed next by Austin Matthews in 2014, and then Brock Zacherl and Michael Pavasko in The trend continued when Dustin Conti won the 197-pound title in About the Coach Clarion is under the direction of fourth-year head coach Keith Ferraro, who took over full-time duties during the season. Before that he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under head coach Troy Letters. Golden Eagles in the Rankings Throughout the season, Brock Zacherl has been recognized in the national rankings. Entering the tournament, Zacherl (141) checks in at eighth according to Intermat and 10th according to FloWrestling. > On March 8, the NCAA released the fourth and final coaches panels rankings for the Here s how the Golden Eagles stacked up in the rankings. > Brock Zacherl (141) - 8th > Taylor Ortz (149) - 31st > Greg Bulsak (184) - 28th > Dustin Conti (197) - 30th > Also on March 8, the NCAA released its third round of RPI rankings. Here s where some of the Golden Eagles stood on that front: > Brock Zacherl (141) - 17th > Greg Bulsak (184) - 27th > Dustin Conti (197) - 30th Long Time Coming With a win over Bloomsburg on Feb. 9, Clarion guaranteed its first season in 15 years. The Golden Eagles finished the year at 10-7, a fourwin improvement on a year ago and a three-win improvement on Keith Ferraro s previous season high in wins. The last time Clarion finished above.500 for a season was during the campaign, when they went 9-8 thanks to a win in the season finale against Virginia Tech. All Four Clarion qualified four athletes to the NCAA Championships this year, doubling their qualifiers from each of the last two years and marking the most they ve had in more than half a decade. 3 The Goose Egg Clarion shut out George Mason on Jan. 21, the first time the Golden Eagles emerged from a team match unscathed since defeating Cleveland State during the season. Clarion has shutout its share of teams over the course of time, but has only done so three times in the last 10 years George Mason Cleveland State American International 56-0 King of the Hill Brock Zacherl got off to another excellent start in , claiming the tournament titles at the Clarion Open, the Wolfpack Open and the PSAC Championships. He finished the year undefeated in dual matches and won 27 straight before falling in the conference finals to Cleveland State s Evan Cheek. > Zacherl is 45-1 all-time in dual matches, having won 43 straight matches since his sole loss. > Including his redshirt year in , Zacherl topped the 100-win mark in the four-match day at Long Island earlier this year, and now has a career mark of He s posted a 77-9 mark since the start of the season. Next in Line? When he takes the mat in Cleveland, Brock Zacherl will try to become Clarion s first placewinner at 141 pounds in nearly two decades. The last Golden Eagle to do it was three-time All-American Mark Angle, who took third and fourth in 1999 and 2000, respectively....or First in Line While Zacherl has the opportunity to be the first Golden Eagle to earn All-American status in his weight class in sometime, the other three Golden Eagles in attendance have the opportunity to make history. No Clarion wrestlers have ever placed in the 149-, 184- and 197-pound weight classes since they were instituted in > Here are the list of the last Golden Eagles to place in those weight classes before the NCAA added seven pounds to each in Tom Tomeo (8th) Charlie Heller (3rd)* Bryan Stout (7th)** * - Heller was a three-time All-American at 177 pounds from with three top-four finishes, including a second-place finish in 1981 ** - Stout was a four-time All-American in total, placing three times at 190 pounds (8th in 1994, 4th in 1995 and 7th in 1996) and taking fourth at heavyweight in Finding a Home Taylor Ortz started his Clarion career at 133 pounds last year, but over the course of time seems to have found a home at 149 pounds. The redshirt freshman made the change late last year and has remained there in > Ortz is the latest in a line of Clarion 149-pounders to earn trips to the NCAA s in recent years. Justin Arthur was the most recent to get a bid, doing so in 2014, with Tyler Bedelyon earning a spot the year before. One Last Ride Dustin Conti missed earning the EWL s automatic bid at 197 pounds by one spot in each of the last two years before finally breaking through to take it this year. In 2016 the league took three competitors but he fell in a third-place match at the conference championships, and last year he was a runner-up in the EWL bracket in a year where they took only one competitor. Conti defeated Rider s Ethan Laird in the 197-pound finals at this year s EWL Championships, avenging an overtime loss to Laird that came earlier in the year. > Conti was Clarion s first 197-pound champion at EWL s since Eric Mausser did it in Mausser was also the last Golden Eagle to qualify at 197 pounds, last doing so in Freshman Phenom Since coming to Clarion, 184-pounder Greg Bulsak has been one of the strongest competitors on the Golden Eagle roster. After posting a 17-4 in his redshirt year he immediately jumped into the starting lineup, going 21-7 in his first year wrestling attached. > Bulsak is Clarion s first qualifier at 184 pounds since Steven Cressley made it in Cleveland Rocks The last time the NCAA Championships was hosted in Cleveland was 1998, though then it was hosted at the Convocation Center on Cleveland State s campus. Clarion saw two competitors - Mark Angle (134) and Tom Tomeo (142) earn All-American status that year, taking fourth and eighth respectively. The Golden Eagles sent five wrestlers to nationals that year, including Lee Pritts, Brad Harris and Jason Moaney. 8 KEITH FERRARO Lock Haven, 2003 Fourth Year Dual Match Record Eight (8) NCAA Qualifiers Keith Ferraro, a native of Brookville, is in his fourth year as Clarion s head wrestling coach. He was named head coach on December 16, 2014, after serving as interim head coach on September 25th. He is only the eighth head wrestling coach in school history. In Ferraro led the Golden Eagles to a number of milestones, bringing the program to heights it had not experienced in a number of years. Clarion went 10-7 in dual match competition, their first winning record since the season, and the Golden Eagles sent four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships for the first time since the season. That total is tied for the most since the team sent five wrestlers to the 2004 championships. Clarion took fourth place at the 2018 EWL Championships, sending four competitors to their respective finals for the first time since All four of those wrestlers - Brock Zacherl (141), Taylor Ortz (149), Greg Bulsak (184) and Dustin Conti (197) - eventually earned spots at the NCAA Championships, with Conti winning the 197-pound title. Ferraro has coached three total EWL champions in his time, with Zacherl (2016) and Michael Pavasko ( ) also winning titles. Ferraro was named Clarion s assistant coach on July 31, 2012 under Troy Letters and he continued in that role until being named interim coach in September of The Recruiting Coordinator since his arrival, he was a major part of the highly rated Golden Eagle recruiting class for which was rated 9th in NCAA Division I by AWN/ Open Mat and 15th by FloWrestling. Ferraro, the son of legendary Brookville Head Wrestling coach Lenny Ferraro, who was posthumously inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2011, is a 1999 Brookville High graduate. He wrestled nearly three years for his father before his passing, and then finished his junior and then senior year under head coach Thad Turner. At Brookville Ferraro was a three-time district champion and was part of the 1999 Brookville High School Dual Meet State Championship Team. Ferraro went on to attend Lock Haven University, was part of the wrestling program for four seasons ( ) and graduated in December of 2003 with a degree in Health and Physical Education. A volunteer coach at Central Mountain in the seasons of 2003 and 2004, Ferraro was the head coach at Brockway in the 2005 season, then took a position to teach at Brookville High School and became the assistant coach under Dave Klepfer since In the season Brookville advanced 13 wrestlers to regionals, 5 to the PIAA Championships and as a team placed fourth in the state dual meet championships. Ferraro and wife Meghan reside in Brookville. They have three children - sons Lenny and Vincent, and a daughter Lillian. KYLE KISS North Carolina, 2012 Kyle Kiss, a former assistant coach and wrestler at North Carolina, returns for his third season as an assistant coach with the Golden Eagles in Kiss has been an essential part of the rebuilding effort at Clarion, leading the Golden Eagles recruiting efforts under head coach Keith Ferraro. Clarion had two NCAA qualifiers in both 2016 and 2017, including two-time qualifier Brock Zacherl (141). In 2018 that number doubled to four qualifiers, including two redshirt freshmen (Greg Bulsak and Taylor Ortz), and the Golden Eagles had four finalists at EWL Championships for the first time since Clarion has also done well in the classroom in that timespan. The Golden Eagles have claimed five NWCA All-Academic selections in each of the last two years, including three in Before coming to Clarion, Kiss was an assistant coach at North Carolina from While at UNC Kiss worked closely with the middle weights and coached five national qualifiers, including All-American 165-pounder Ethan Ramos. A native of Loch Arbour, N.J. and a 2007 graduate of Ocean Township High, Kiss was a four-time New Jersey state placewinner. He was a two-time Beast of the East finalist and was also a state finalist as a senior. In 2007 Kiss moved on to wrestle for the Tar Heels, where he enjoyed a decorated career on the mat. He was a three-time ACC placewinner for UNC that was ranked in the top 20 nationally in the 2010 and 2012 seasons. He graduated from UNC in 2012 with a B.S. in Exercise and Sports Science.
