1 WADAH PERPUSTAKAAN bruneilibraryassociation.wordpress.com Bil. 3 Mac 2015 ISSN SULTAN HAJI HASSANAL BOLKIAH: LEADING ALL THE WAY Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah: Leading All The Way was launched on 26 February It is on His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mui zzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam s vision and role in leading and developing the nation under the Malay Muslim Monarchy (MIB) philosophy. Dr Hj Muhammad Hadi Muhammad Melayong, who wrote and compiled the book said that the adoption and strengthening of MIB values in our daily lives is the key to stability in politics, the economy and society - especially in combating social illnesses of the global era. The MIB Supreme Council hopes the timeline of His Majesty s leadership featured in the book from 1967 to the present day will better showcase the unity, prosperity and peace achieved during His Majesty s reign and serves to strengthen the adoption and respect of MIB values as the nation progresses towards its 2035 vision. The 176 paged book in 7 chapters is published in Malay with an accompanying English translation, and consists mainly of articles released in the Dirgahayu books published from 2004 to 2009 in conjunction with His Majesty s birthday celebrations. 2 LAUNCH OF TASEK MERIMBUN THE BLACK BEAUTY OF BRUNEI DARUSSALAM His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade launched Tasek Merimbun The Black Beauty of Brunei Darussalam on 1 March 2015, at Balai Purun of the Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park. The release of the book was in conjunction with its 30th anniversary as an ASEAN Heritage Park. It became one of the ASEAN Heritage Parks on 29th November 1984, the same year when Brunei Darussalam resumed its full independence. The book of 168 pages book is written by Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Omar Ali the Museum s Curator of Natural History and Manager of Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park, who worked with photographer Hj Ilham Rohaidi Hj Mashud contains information about the park, and is filled with pictures of the surroundings and its inhabitants, particularly the birds. The book The park is a breeding place for birds such the Purple Heron and various egrets as well as a destination for migrating birds. The park was also included as one of the arenas used in the First Borneo Bird Race in 2013 and is also famous for the beautiful black water lake, the largest of its kind in Brunei. It has diverse ecosystems which are home to a number of different forest types, one of which being the peat swamp forest. As such, it was declared a nature reserve in 1967 under the administration of the Museums Department. Tasek Merimbun has played host to various important activities including research into numerous fields that relate to the natural world from stingless bees to practical horticulture. Since 2008, Tasek Merimbun has been the setting for an annual weeklong field course on Tropical Ecology and Conservation organised by Queen Mary University of London in the United Kingdom. The park has also played host to the Young Naturalists Programme, an annual programme aimed at Year 4 and Year 5 students from schools throughout the country. Source : The Brunei Times KUPU-SB BOOK FESTIVAL THE Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College (KUPU SB) launched 17 new publications at the opening ceremony of Ma rad al-kutub KUPU SB on January It was in conjunction with its 4th convocation ceremony. The event was co-organised by KUPU SB Publishing Centre and KUPU SB library. The book festival aimed at promoting the new books to the public. The Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Pg Dato Paduka Hj Bahrom Pg Hj Bahar, launched the publications which comprised seven books, two monographs, one journal, four proceedings books (special edition) and two books on guideline to understanding Ahli Sunnah wal Jama ah. With the new additions, Publishing Centre of KUPU SB has now published a total of 81 books from 2008 to The books were written by academicians from both inside and outside of KUPU SB. 3 31 ST BRUNEI NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATIONS Generation with A Vision More than 30,000 people from various government and nongovernment organisations came together at the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien to celebrate the country's 31st national day. In His Majesty's Titah in conjunction with this year's National Day celebration, His Majesty emphasized on the need for the succeeding generation should have a vision by equipping themselves to face the challenges that come. Among the challenges is maintaining peace, prosperity and security. To achieve this, all parties are responsible in playing the roles and duties including close and united cooperation from the public. A performance from the participants of National Service Programme (PKBN) entitled "Gerak Cergas Belia Berwawasan" or Energetic Action of Visionary Youth, enlivened this year's celebration. The performance was a manifestation of highly disciplined, professional, energetic and active youths who will lead the country to a better future. The highlight of the event was the performance of the "Silat Tari Wira Keadaan" by some 200 Year-4 to Year-6 primary school students. They are the saviours who will defend the country from unrest, challenges and threats that can shake the identity and prosperity of the country. They are ready to defend the monarch, religion, race and country with prayers, strengths and high spirits of patriotism. Some 7,900 youths representing secondary schools, colleges and higher learning institutes took part in the "Generasi Berwawasan" performance. The performance embodied youths as the country's hope in shaping a strong and independence nation. A blossom-flower logo represented the country's vision and hope in establishing the country as a nation of Zikir, in together supporting and upholding His Majesty's Titah towards achieving 2035 Vision. Source: CONSAL REGIONAL PUBLICATION PROJECT The National Team on a publication on Leading Women met on 31 January 2015 to report on the progress of the project. 4 LIBRARY OF SEKOLAH MENENGAH SUFRI BOLKIAH, TUTONG Siti Marlina Binti Haji Md Ali, Library Assistant II Brief History Established as Anthony Abell English Prep School (Tutong Branch) sited at Muda Hashim Primary School, Tutong Separated from Anthony Abell College and renamed Tutong English School Due to an increase in students number, the school moved to Sekolah Melayu Muda Hashim Tutong Tutong English School moved to present location the school was declared open by Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Seri Paduka Pengiran Muda Sufri Bolkiah and Renamed Sekolah Inggeris Sufri Bolkiah (Sufri Bolkiah English School) name changed to Sekolah Menengah Sufri Bolkiah Tutong and has remained so until today school became independent and accepted female students only Closure of Sekolah Menengah Sufri Bolkiah hostel on 1 Januari Hosteliers moved to Sekolah Menengah Tanjong Maya, Tutong. 23 Jun 2011 hand over of new Sekolah Menengah Sufri Bolkiah Tutong building under Phase 1. Today Sekolah Menengah Sufri Bolkiah has 713 students. The school library The role of the school library is to support the learning and teaching process in line the curriculum by providing relevant print and electronic media as supplementary materials to text books and learning in the class rooms, The library has 25,000 items, provides loan and reference services, newspapers and magazines and facilities to our library clients (students, teachers and staff) such study spaces, photocopying services, tutorial room and wireless internet access. The guest of honour was Yang Mulia Datin Paduka Hjh Adina, Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. PSW was registered on 5 February 1990, with the aim of uniting the graduate women in Brunei Darussalam and preserve the professional relations among the women as well as create a forum for the members to discuss matters related to self-development, family, community and country. 6 BRUNEI BOOK FAIR & READING CULTURE EMPOWERMENT CARNIVAL 2015 This year s Brunei Book Fair (Pesta Buku Brunei) with the theme Buku Bacalah! was launched on 26 Feb to 7 March 2015 at the Indoor Stadium, in conjunction with the nation s 31st National Day celebration. The aim of the Book Fair and Reading Culture Empowerment Carnival is in line with DBP s objectives to instill reading culture and encourage the younger generation to start reading as early as possible, eventually making it a daily habit. A special announcement was also delivered by DBP to introduce Brunei s first batch of Reading Ambassadors. Four youths from each district were selected as this year s reading ambassadors. 7 5 th KUALA BELAIT BOOK FAIR & FESTIVAL The two-day book fair, was held from 31 Jan -1 Feb 2015 from 8am to 5pm organised by the English Department of Sayyidina Ali Secondary School. The book fair aims to develop a reading culture among students and the public.the school is also the venue for the event, collaborating with other co-curricular activity clubs as well as other online vendors in the district. With the theme Ready, Set, Read!, there were different kinds of books for sale from novels to children s books, to teenage reads and graphic novels. There was a mini art exhibition featuring arts and crafts from various artists in Brunei and neighbouring countries. The book fair had been held in previous years and it has grown bigger every year with more activities and is now an established and a much awaited event for the Belait community. Participants included non-government organisations such as Care and Action for Strays (CAS) as well as Green Brunei which showcased some of their voluntary activities across Brunei Darussalam with the hope to encourage charitable acts amongst the visitors. In addition, there were special guests from Australia where they took part in a fun run that was held during the launch of the book fair.
