1 Illinois Ducks Unlimited I DU Ill Editor: Bill Sarafin LIKE US ON FACEBOOK! August 2014 In This Issue Illinois DU License Plate 2 Volunteers 2 A Word From Our Chairman Well, we re into the dog days of summer and you all know what that means..yes, it s banquet planning season! The Illinois Event section of our website and newsletter fills up quickly this time of year with our banquets, dinners, shoots, and more. As you plan your events, please always remember Priority #1 recruitment of volunteers, Priority #2 membership growth, and Priority #3 event efficiency. And speaking of planning, don t forget about meeting our high value event merchandise item reserves. The Gun of the Year (Browning A5, semi-auto, 12 ga) has a $1,400 reserve; the Handgun of the Year (Kimber 1911, 45 ACP) has a $1,000 reserve; and the Top 100/President s Elite (Fausti Select O/U, 12 ga) has a $1,800 reserve. The reserves apply regardless of the technique used (raffles typically generate more income.) Please remember that having the cost underwritten in advance does not negate the need to meet the reserve. Finally, a committee member or auctioneer should clearly indicate to the audience in advance of the auction or raffle that there is a reserve. Check out the flyer on the Banner Marsh Youth Duck Hunt. Local chapter volunteers are co-hosting the event. It s a great opportunity for kids who may be interested but might not otherwise get a chance to go duck hunting. The Illinois DNR will be issuing 26 permits each day for a chance to hunt at Banner Marsh during the youth hunting season. On-line applications will be accepted during the entire month of September. So spread the word and let s help give kids the opportunity for a duck hunting experience. Finally, read all about our 2015 Calendar Raffle! It s bigger and better than ever and still only $50 each. This raffle sells itself! So contact your RD to order your chapter s calendars soon, before they are all gone. As always, it s an exciting time to be a part of DU and I look forward to working together to make Illinois Ducks Unlimited the absolute best we can be! 5 Pawnee resident elected to Ducks Unlimited s national board of directors SPRINGFIELD, Ill. June 23, 2014 Galen Johnson was elected to Ducks Unlimited Inc. s national board of directors during the organization s annual convention in St. Louis. "The leadership of our board of directors ensures we are fulfilling our mission to conserve, restore and manage wetlands and associated habitats for North America's waterfowl," said DU CEO Dale Hall. "Our board members are not paid for their work. They volunteer their time and resources because they feel so strongly about conservation. I welcome each new member and look forward to working with them in the years to come." Johnson has been a volunteer for more than 31 years and has served in many other capacities for Ducks Unlimited. He is currently the state s major gift chairman. He was the state chairman of Illinois for two years and state s treasurer for two years prior to that. Johnson owns Johnson Real Estate, which specializes in Springfield, Chatham and Rochester properties. His hobbies are hunting and beekeeping. "Conservation is a true passion of mine. I believe whole heartedly that if we need to make responsible choices to leave a natural resource legacy for future generations. Ducks Unlimited is one organization that is making a real difference on the landscape. I m proud to step up my involvement and I look forward to this expanded role." For a complete list of DU s volunteer board of directors, please visit Ducks Unlimited Inc. is the world s largest non-profit organization dedicated to conserving North America's continually disappearing waterfowl habitats. 6 Event Efficiency So, how is our event efficiency? Statewide with 181 events we performed at an efficiency of 48.2%. Not bad, huh? Well, the difference in net income (what we spend on wetland conservation) between 48.2% and 50% is $75,504. Let s break this down further: 75 out of 181 events performed at 50% or better efficiency. 38 out of 181 events performed at % efficiency with an average efficiency of 45.2%. The difference in net income between 45.2% and 50% is $44, out of 181 events performed at % efficiency with an average efficiency of 27.1%. The difference in net income between 27.1% and 50% is $302,135. That s 1,208 additional acres of wetlands (each year) we could conserve. Improving event efficiency is HUGE! We can do better! How was your event efficiency? V VI

9 A few things to remember Illinois Ducks Unlimited 2015 Calendar Raffle Please let your RD know how many calendars you believe your chapter can sell. Your RD will try to get all calendars to you as soon as possible. There is no chapter requirement for selling calendars. PLEASE do not sell calendars at your event. These calendars are designed to help raise funds outside of the banquets. If you have a fall banquet, please wait until after your event to start selling calendars. We have run into issues with banquet attendance when chapters sell the calendars prior to their banquet. If you commit to selling a certain amount of calendars and you don t think you are going to sell them all, please let your RD know as soon as possible, so that we can get these calendars to other volunteers who can sell them.

10 A few more things to remember Illinois Ducks Unlimited 2015 Calendar Raffle Once all of your calendars are sold, send your RD a check (along with all the calendar stubs) for the entire amount. If your chapter sells enough calendars to achieve at least $2,500 net income, your RD will set up a separate event in the system and this would qualify your chapter for a free 10/30 gun. Or, the money can just be posted to your Dinner banquet as additional funds. That choice is yours. Deadline for calendar sales is December 1 st. Please have all calendars sold with checks and calendar stubs to your RD by this date. This allows us enough time to process all calendar stubs for the first drawing in January IX

17 59.3% That s how many of our events qualified for and received the 10/30 incentive gun in Illinois last year. Really? That s the question I had when I crunched the numbers. Really? Let s review what s required to qualify for a FREE 10/30 gun. 10/30 Incentive Program EVENT REPORTING (10/30) THE MEMBERSHIPS AND THE MAJOR PORTION OF THE PROCEEDS OF AN EVENT* ARE TO BE RECEIVED AT DUCKS UNLIMITED NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS WITHIN TEN (10) DAYS FOLLOWING THE EVENT. THE FINANCIAL REPORT AND THE REMAINDER OF THE PROCEEDS ARE TO BE RECEIVED AT NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS NO MORE THAN THIRTY (30) DAYS FOLLOWING THE EVENT. WHEN THESE TIMELINES ARE ACHIEVED A FIREARM WILL BE AWARDED TO THE CHAPTER TO BE UTILIZED AS A FUNDRAISER FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER EVENT. *Event (miscellaneous events) must qualify with a minimum of $2,500 and for a banquet the minimum is $5,000. So, here are the numbers for last year. Illinois Ducks Unlimited held 191 events. These included dinner events, shoots, gun bash drawdown raffles, shoots, sponsor events, WHPs, and miscellaneous events. Reduce that number by those events that fall below the event minimum dollar qualifications and we had 165 events that qualify for the FREE 10/30 gun. Of those 165 events, only 98 (59.3%) met the timeframe requirements for the FREE 10/30 gun. We can do better! Think of it this way..we left 67 FREE 10/30 guns locked up at National that we could have used at our events to raise money for the ducks. Depending on how we use our FREE 10/30 gun at our event, we could at least more than double our money on our FREE 10/30 gun. Heck, a $250 raffle means we lost over $16,000 by not taking advantage of this FREE 10/30 gun Incentive Program. AND, since it cost us nothing, every dollar we raise from our FREE 10/30 gun improves our event efficiency that much more! So let s all work to improve our participation in the 10/30 Incentive Program and earn that FREE 10/30 gun for our next event! Remember.it s FREE!
