1 The Lima News Friday, November 24, PREVIEW Don Speck The Lima News Crestview s Javin Etzler, right, battles Delphos St. John s Jared Wurst for the ball during the tournament last year. The Knights won 17 games last year and could be a team to watch this season, especially with Etzler getting offers from four NCAA Division I schools. By Jim Naveau jnaveau@limanews.com 10 this season things to watch 1. Will Versailles fill up gyms with Ohio State recruit Justin Ahrens playing his senior season? The answer probably is yes and no. Having one of the best players in the state will bring a few more fans out to watch the Tigers games. But they play in the Midwest Athletic Conference, so the gyms are already full or close to it. 2. Can Ottawa- Glandorf contend for the Western Buckeye League championship and make a tournament run after Jay Kaufman, the Titans leading scorer and rebounder a year ago, suffered a torn ACL last spring? The 6-foot, 4-inch senior was the Western Buckeye League Player of the Year and second-team All-Ohio last season when he averaged 18.5 points and 9.2 rebounds a game. O-G has five returning players from last season s 21-3 team who averaged between 7.5 points and 18.5 points a game. 3. With a talented roster that includes several juniors who have played varsity since their freshman season, is Crestview poised for a big season? The Knights won 17 games last season, were runner-up to Spencerville in the Northwest Conference and were district runner-up to state semifinalist Delphos St. John s. They ll get a late start because of the football team s success, but that s nothing new. Javin Etzler was a firstteam All-NWC player last year and has offers from four NCAA Division I schools. Lima Senior and Lima Central Catholic will play for city bragging rights on Jan. 23. BJ Miller is back as a senior for the Spartans. 4. Can Perry win its fourth consecutive Northwest Central Conference championships? The Commodores were a state semifinalist a year ago and have won 22, 18, 18 and 24 games the last four seasons. But they will have to replace two first-team All-NWCC players (Jakoby Lane-Harvey and Kobe Glover) and two second-team All-NWCC selections (Orion Monford and Plummie Gardner). 5. What are some intriguing non-league match-ups? The Lima Senior-Middletown rivalry has a storied history and the Spartans get to make some more history on Dec. 9 when they will be the opponent for the first game in Middletown s new gym. On Dec. 27, two of the most successful basketball programs in the state will play a rare regular-season game against each other when Kalida plays at Lima Central Catholic. ONLY ON LIMAOHIO.COM See previews for area teams at LimaOhio.com/ tag/boyshoops. The Lima city bragging rights will be on the line again when Lima Senior plays at LCC on Jan. 23. And when Delphos St. John s goes to Fremont St. Joseph on Dec. 1, it will be the start of the 100th season of basketball for the Blue Jays program. 6. What is an intriguing league game for an unusual reason? Fort Jennings and Ottoville share a corner of southwest Putnam County three miles apart. The two towns will share something else this season because Ottoville s coach, Keith Utendorf, was Fort Jennings coach last season, which should add a little extra to their two games against each other. See BOYS WATCH 9 When Delphos St. John s goes to Fremont St. Joseph on Dec. 1, it will be the start of the 100th season of basketball for the Blue Jays program. The Blue Jays went to the state tournament last season, increasing the enthusiasm for the team. Justin Ahrens, right, of Versailles already committed to Ohio State and is back for his senior season, providing some star power in the Midwest Athletic Conference.

2 2 Friday, November 24, 2017 The Lima News PREVIEW Dennis Saam The Lima News Bluffton s Alivia Koenig (23) has her shot blocked by Columbus Grove s Paige Bellman (43) during a game last season. Bluffton may have its shot of overtaking Columbus Grove in the Northwest Conference, after Bellman suffered an injury in the preseason. Koenig is back for the Pirates. Ottawa-Glandorf s Kadie Hempfling puts up a shot against Norton s Jimi Howell during the Division II regional final last year. The Titans hope to make another trip to state behind the Bowling Greenbound Hempfling, but a move down to Division III could challenge the Titans. By Jose Nogueras jnogueras@aimmediamidwest.com 1. Who are some of the top players in the area? It starts with threetime All-Ohio performer Kadie Hempfling from Ottawa-Glandorf. The senior, who recently committed to Bowling Green, was co-wbl player of the year and once again will be a force to reckon with during the regular season. Others to look for this year are Delphos Jefferson s Sarah Miller, Crestview s Paige Motyka and her teammate Lyvia Black, Wapakoneta s Lexi Jacobs and Sarah Pothast, along with New Bremen s Jane Homan and Macy Puthoff. 2. Who has the best chance to reach state? The obvious answer is Ottawa-Glandorf. The Titans have been to the final four the last three seasons, and with the core of the team coming back and Hempfling leading the way, O-G is battled-tested and ready to go. The Titans will have to deal with the loss of Katie White. Putnam County rival Ottoville has made several strong playoff runs and has a nucleus to be successful again. 3. Does the division change help O-G? The Titans dropped from Division II to Division III, which might sound like it benefits O-G. However, Division III is loaded with plenty of talented teams, such as Columbus Africentric and Versailles. Other teams who moved down a division were Bluffton, Columbus Grove and Delphos Jefferson from Division III to Division IV. Crestview moved up to Division III from Division IV, and Fort Recovery, Parkway and St. Henry go from Division III to Division IV. 4. Can anyone dethrone O-G in the WBL? The Titans posted a perfect 9-0 record last year but will be hard pressed to repeat that feat with a number of viable challengers. Wapakoneta, Kenton and Bath all bring back top players and will look to bump off the Titans from the top spot. 5. Who is the frontrunner in the NWC? Initially it was Columbus Grove. Despite losing some top-notch seniors, the Bulldogs still had Paige Bellman, the NWC and PCL player of the year. However, she was lost to injury during the preseason, leaving the door open for several teams in the conference to make a move. Bluffton, which finished second last year, returns a number of players, and Crestview, Spencerville and Jefferson all look to make a run at the NWC crown. 6. Can Upper Scioto go undefeated in the Northwest Central Conference for the third year in a row? The Rams have been the dominant team in the NWCC the last two years, going However, USV, which lost some quality seniors and has a new coach, may be vulnerable this year. Ridgemont, which finished second with a 5-1 mark, has the majority of the players back and looks to be the top contender for the title. 7. How does Lima Central Catholic fill the void left by Madison Stolly? 10 this season Ottawa-Glandorf s fans have had plenty to cheer about in recent seasons, making it to the final four in Columbus the past three years. For four years, Stolly was LCC girls basketball. But now that she has graduated and moved on to the University of Findlay, the Thunderbirds find themselves searching for a new identity. New coach Ron Williams, with only three returning letterwinners, will be relying on some of his younger players to step up, including his daughter, Rosie Williams, who should signs of being a force inside her freshman year. 8. Can Lima Senior return to its winning ways? Vince Halliday will have his hands full trying to blend a talented freshmen group with some of the veteran players on the team. The Spartans return six letterwinners, and if Lima Senior s head coach can find the right blend of experience and enthusiasm the Spartans could make some waves this season. 9. Who is the frontrunner in the PCL? ONLY ON LIMAOHIO.COM See previews for area teams at LimaOhio.com/ tag/girlshoops. The Putnam County League features some of the top teams in the area, and it will be another right race. Ottoville brings back a core of its team that made t to the final four last year, but Leipsic and Pandora-Gilboa will push Ottoville this year. Dark horses are Fort Jennings, Kalida and Continental and Miller City. 10. Can Ottoville get back to state? Ottoville lost some key seniors but return a strong lineup that could propel the Big Green back to Columbus. But for this to happen, Dave Kleman will look to find the right chemistry among his players in order to make it back to the final four. Also Kleman could reach 500 victories this season. He is 20 wins away from that prestigious mark. Ottoville s Bridget Landin shoots against Berlin Hiland s Angela Troyer during the state semifinal last year. Landin is back for the Big Green, who are shooting for another trip to Columbus this year. things to watch WIN T-BIRDS WIN! OH L From All Your Alumni at Riepenhoff Family Entertainment

9 The Lima News Friday, November 24, Don Speck The Lima News Spencerville s Ben Dues (53) and Allen East s Johnny Brinkman fight for a rebound during a league game last year. Role players like Dues will need to step up this season if Spencerville wants to repeat as Northwest Conference champion after losing four senior starters. Spencerville Bearcats Coach: Kevin Sensabaugh Years, career record: 5, Last Year: 18-6, 8-0 Ben Dues (Sr.), Drew Armstead Jackson Goecke (So.), Kolton Murray (Sr.), Gage Kline (Sr.), Kale Lee, Nate Hickey, Connor Holmes, Peyton Brown (So.), Keegan Goecke (Fr.), Dalton Prichard (Fr.) Team Outlook: After finishing 18-6 last year, we are going to go through a bit of a transition. We had a wealth of talent and experience for a few years in a row. We have very little experience back. We lost four seniors starters, three of which were four-year players, so you will see a lot of new faces for us this year. It will be a much different experience year but one that we are looking forward to.
