5/13/2014 EO Each CSU campus shall define its GE student learning outcomes, to fit within the framework of the four Essential Learning Outcomes drawn from the Liberal Education and American Promise (LEAP) campaign, an initiative of the Association of American Colleges and Universities. Critical Thinking and AAC&U According to the AAC&U: Critical thinking is a habit of mind characterized by the comprehensive exploration of issues, ideas, artifacts, and events before accepting or formulating an opinion or conclusion. 4

5/13/2014 Critical Thinking Learning Outcomes from AAC&U Explanation of issues Evidence selecting and using information to investigate a point of view Influence of context and assumptions Student's position (perspective, thesis/hypothesis) Conclusions and related outcomes (implications and consequences) Critical thinking A necessary skill for engineering graduates 5

5/13/2014 Critical Thinking in Problem Solving Problem Solving Scientific Thinking Define a question Gather information and resources Form an explanatory hypothesis Test the hypothesis by performing an experiment and collecting data in a reproducible manner Analyze the data Interpret the data and draw conclusions that serve as a starting point for new hypothesis Document the results/solution in a written report Repeat the various processes as needed to converge to a optimal solution 6

5/13/2014 Accreditation Requirements General Criterion - Student Outcomes The program must have documented student outcomes that prepare graduates to attain the program educational objectives. (c) an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability (e) an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems Authorized Exceptions to Admission & GE-Breadth Requirements Critical Thinking () is integrated primarily in the upper division curriculum and need not be completed before transfer at the following CSU campuses: Chico all programs Fresno all programs Humboldt Environmental Resources Los Angeles all programs Northridge all and Computer Science programs Sacramento all programs San Francisco all programs San José all, Biological Science, Chemistry, Earth Science, Geology San Luis Obispo all and Computer Science programs 7

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT CAUFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, LONG BEACH 1250 BELLFLOWER BOULEVARD LoNG BEACH, CALIFOR.'IIlA ll5 562/98Hl21 July 15, 2008 Dr. Gary Reichard, Executive Vice Chancellor The California State University 401 Golden Shore Long Beach, CA Dear Gary: Under the provision of Executive order 1033, Article b, CSU Long Beach requests a waiver of three units from the General Education requirement for the high unit degrees in and Technology, to a total of 45 units. The university has been operating with a waiver of six units for many years, but unfortunately we cannot find the written record of approval by the Chancellor, so we cannot cite a date for the prior waiver. This waiver is requested as a way to reduce the total units required for these high unit majors, in compliance with the Trustees' request. CSU Long Beach recently revised its General Education requirements to reduce the total units (from 51 to 48) and to allow more "double-counting" between General Education and the academic majors. However, the total units needed to meet accreditation requirements and also the full General Education distribution pattern still add up to well above 120 units for most of the and Technology degree programs. We continue to work to modify these curricula, where possible, to reduce the requirements; even with the requested three-unit waiver, these programs will continue to require more than 120 units. The requested waiver would come from CSULB General Education category B.l.a (Biological Sciences) for the vast majority of students who do not have a Biology course as a requirement. For those engineering majors that do require a Biology course (Chemical, Civil, Biomedical), students would take the waiver in category C3 or D2, which are General Education electives in the CSULB program. Thank you for your consideration of this request. 34 0\LPOLY California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, CA Academic Programs (805) Fax (805) November 19, 2010 Christine Hanson, State University Dean Academic Programs and Policy Office of the Chancellor 401 Golden Shore Long Beach, CA Dear Chris, It recently came to our attention, via a reporting error, that our BS General major {09012} has not been included in the "High-unit Major'' category for exemption for the critical thinking requirement for transfer students. In 2001 Cal Poly significantly revised our General Education program and created an " GE Template." In January 2001 David Spence approved the' request by Provost Zingg to have the template approved and to exempt upper-division transfer students to Cal Poly engineering majors from the GE Area critical thinking requirement {letter attached). Unfortunately, our letter of November 27, 2000 from Paul Zingg omitted to include the BS General major. We typically have very few upper-division transfer applications accepted for our General major, but it appears that a transfer application was recently accepted that caused the "catastrophic error'' In reporting to appear. As far as we know, this is the first such error. The BS General program has followed the GE template since the new GE program began in 2001 (please see the attached catalog page). We would appreciate your approval to include the BS General major in the "High-unit Major" category. Best regards, Erling A- c ;:?vtvijl7v Erling. Smith, P.D., P.E. It is clear that a great deal of careful thought went into this curriculum. As you indicated, the "template" for programs that are subject to accreditation by ABET differs from the pattern established by Title 5 and Executive Order 595. Consistent with standard procedures, we consulted with the Advisory Committee on General Education. The committee recommended that the exceptions be granted for those programs, and I concur. The programs for which the exceptions are currently approved are the BS degrees with majors in Aerospace (program code 09021), Architectural (program code 09041), Bioresource and Agricultural (program code 09031), Civil (program code 09081), Computer (program code 09094), Electrical (program code 09091), (program code 09011), Environmental (program code 09??1), Industrial (program code 09131), Manufacturing (program code 09134), Materials (program code 09151), and Mechanical (program code 09101).
