UNN'S STAMP NEWS, MONDAY, JANUARY 4, 1982 Postmark Pursuit By Elaine Durnin Boughner Collectors have been noting a relatively new machine cancel of late with the designation "Kilmer Facility, NJ 088." Bob McCurdy of Pennsylvania became curious about the marking and began investigating. His findings are shared with Pursuit readers. The earliest date so far found for the Kilmer marking is Sept. 24, Three types of postmarks have been seen so far, two machine cancels and a four-bar hand cancel with the full ZIP Code of McCurdy wrote to the facility and received the following letter from Chester H. Kuchnicki, manager of retail sales and services: "The Kilmer GMF (General Mail Facility) was designed to house the New Brunswick Management Sectional Center offices and to replace the small processing annex which was formerly at 1 Home News Row in New Brunswick. "Administrative offices moved in during the last week of August with all other opera- tions moving in the Columbus Day weekend. "In addition to consolidating New Brunswick's operations, the vehicle maintenance facility was moved from Asbury Park to the new Kilmer GMF. No formal dedication has been held yet (Dec. 9), but one is planned for January "The 142,000 square foot structure is located on 32 acres of land on the site of the former Camp Kilmer arthy post in Edison. "The building was named for Sgt. Alfred Joyce Kilmer, poet and soldier, born in New Brunswick on Nov. 6, 1886, and killed in action in France in World War I on July 30, Kilmer was also a poet and wrote the well-known poem Trees. "As for the appearance of odd slogan dies, tests had to be conducted at the Kilmer GMF on the refurbished Mark Its using 'live' mail, and at the same time maintain the operation at the former annex. "During this period maintenance personnel inadvertantly used some dies which were not appropriate at that time. "We are now fully operational at the new facility, the home of the New Brunswick Management Sectional Center." Thanks go to Bob McCurdy for sharing this background information on a new postmark with us. NJP1-1 38
