TUSHEKA DINGLER Resident Highlight Bill Wellborn Born in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, Bill and his lovely wife, Marianne, will celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary on November 1st! Congratulations! Bill has been writing short plays for 45 plus years all over the country. Bill moved to Williams Place from Atlanta, Georgia and used to love to play golf. The Davidson Players will be here reading his stories. Bill and his wife have been residents here since February They have four children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Feeling good about yourself can reduce depression, improve self-esteem and increase self-worth. Physical appearance: Saying active helps you tone your muscles and maintain a healthy weight.

Heart Health: Regular physical activity can lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and can reduce the risk of illnesses such as Type 2 diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Sense of Well-Being: Being in a healthy state and in good shape can give you more energy, reduce anxiety and stress. You can improve your posture, and look better! We offer exercise classes three times a week that will improve strength, flexibility, endurance and will make you feel good! Join us for exercise class on Tuesdays and Thursdays mornings, at 9:30 a.m., in the ACT Room and Friday mornings, at 9:30 a.m., in the Gym. Come join us and get your strength on! The Great Pumpkin! Residents visited Carrigan Farms in Mooresville. It was so much fun picking out a pumpkin and they even went on a hayride! Exercise is the new medicine! To our veterans: You gave for peace with courage, so that families may be free. So children could grow strong and safe they d ever be. In giving for the sake of peace, you may have suffered loss. Your body still may show its wounds from taking up the cause. May remembrance of your time away, your sacrifice for peace. Spur us on to strive more strongly for freedom, that there will be release from causes that sent some away to fight that we may freely live, with gratefulness we thank you, veterans, for all you gave and give. 5 Facts About Lake Norman Lake Norman s original purpose was to provide fresh water and flood control for the region. More than 50 years later, when the Catawba River was dammed, the lake has now transformed into a statewide destination. Year built: 1963 Area: 32,510 acres at full pond Length: 33.6 miles Width: 9 miles Shoreline length: 520 miles Maximum depth: 110 feet Average depth: 33.5 feet Named for: Norman Atwater Cocke (former president of Duke Power) Built for: Source of power for Duke Energy, Marshall Steam Station (coal plant) and McGuire Nuclear Station In 1957, plans were announced for building the dam at the historic Cowans Ford where Revolutionary War Gen. William Lee Davidson was killed. Gov. Luther Hodges visited in September 1959 to blast the first dynamite for the dam. Bishop Nolan Harmon of the Methodist Church was there to pray, May the land lost prove prosperity gained. Gingerbread House Contest Culinary services and activities are excited to roll out our Annual Gingerbread Contest for all Hawthorn communities! Chefs, Activities and residents teamed up to plan something great to bring the holiday spirit out in everyone! This is a Contest and Williams Place wants to win! The winners of this Contest will be the team who not only uses their creativity and talent to create a homemade gingerbread display, but also have lots of participation from residents. The Categories are: Most Creative, Best Resident Involvement and Vintage/Classic. All entries have to be received by Friday, December 29th. It became a Living Military Museum, named in honor of the man who spent the last 14 years of his life honoring and supporting America s veterans. It was owned and operated by Richard Warren, a U.S.

6 Richard s Coffee Shop Richard s Coffee Shop, located in Mooresville, North Carolina, is a legend and must see for veterans and families. What started out as a little shop named Pat s Gourmet Coffee Shop, named in honor of his wife, became much more. It became a Living Military Museum, named in honor of the man who spent the last 14 years of his life honoring and supporting America s veterans. It was owned and operated by Richard Warren, a U.S. Army, Vietnam Huey gunship pilot, call sign Mustang 53. With his background, Richard made a point of extending the traditional veterans greeting of Welcome Home to every veteran who came in the shop. Over time, Pat s became a gathering place for veterans of all ages and a collection of artifacts, awards, magazine and newspaper articles slowly accumulated and are displayed. Our State, the official North Carolina state magazine, labeled it The Most Patriotic Coffee Shop in America. That s not far from the truth, since it is the only nonprofit coffee shop and living military museum in the United States. Sadly, in May of 2009, Richard died of complications from exposure to Agent Orange. He had spent many years of his life providing assistance and support to veterans. But, just months before he passed away, he started forming a nonprofit organization and he wanted it to be named Welcome Home Veterans. This nonprofit would oversee and keep Richard s dream, to see that what he started grow and continue to recognize, serve, support, and honor those who gave so much. After his death, there were some issues with the lease being so old and Pat s Coffee Shop closed. We re not sure at this point if it was the need for a good cup of coffee, missing other comrades, or the honor and tradition of carrying on for a fallen comrade, but a number of Richard s regular patrons were determined that his special legacy would not be lost. Richard s Coffee Shop, named in Richard Warren s honor, and with oversight from Welcome Home Veterans, Inc., opened on July 4, 2009, just down the street from the original site of Pat s Coffee Shop, underwritten by the members of the nonprofit s Board and the generous contributions of so many others. New Clubs Forming at Williams Place Williams Place has all kinds of new clubs and groups forming. Starting this month, there is a resident discussion group on various topics including: A Veterans Coffee that will meet on Mondays, Scripture Study on Wednesday mornings, a new Hootenanny Group for musicians and entertainers, a Gingerbread House Competition and Committee, and a Welcome Committee.
