1 THE LOS OSOS BAND, orchestra & color guard WEEKLY For December 18 24, 2017 Success is the peace of mind that is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming Coach John Wooden General Announcements: A SUCCESSFUL SEMESTER OF MARCHING BAND Is really the culmination and blending of the time and talents of many different individuals who come together for a common goal. There are many people who contributed to the 2017 Los Osos Regiment. Each and every student in the Regiment this fall semester has worked hard to uphold the Los Osos Tradition of Excellence. It was not always easy and the work was hard. At the end of the process though, the character-building and work-ethic-refining process of this semester has left a valuable mark on each and every member of the Regiment. Simply put, we are better people because of the process and the activity itself. We came together as a family, we worked hard, we focused on a shared vision of success, and we finished proud. Our performance at SCSBOA

2 Championships was the finest of our semester. We owe our thanks to many: to the booster club parents for their ongoing support; to the instructional staff for their fine teaching; to the student staff for their exemplary leadership (both on and off of the field); to the many alumni and fans whose enthusiastic support pushed us forward all season; to the students, faculty, and administration of Los Osos High School for their unending support. We owe our appreciation to our arranger, John Carnahan and to our drill designer, Rob Jett. We also congratulate our colleagues from throughout the Chaffey District for their outstanding championships performances at SCSBOA and WBA. As a 6A organization, we are again growing and refining ourselves, just as we did when we began to grow up as a 5A group. As Coach John Wooden said, The journey is greater than the inn. Music education at Los Osos High School is alive and thriving. And now, let s keep going! ONWARD! ALUMNI LEGACY CLUB FOR These gracious donors are helping to move our program forward! Dr. Sam R. We have many fine performances to adjudicate, and there were some tough decisions to make! Whether or not your act was chosen to perform on this year s recital, we encourage all of our students to continue to audition and work toward these types of opportunities. Remember, auditions are like job interviews; we get better at them over time and as we have participated in the process! Those students who need a piano accompanist will be assigned one, paid-for by our program. Students will have an opportunity to rehearse with the accompanist prior to the performance date. All acts that were selected to perform need to commit some after-school and weekend practice time to ensure that the upcoming performance is as polished and strong as possible. PERFORMANCE: Friday, January 19 th at 7:00pm in the LO Theatre. This recital will be mandatory-attendance for all students in our band, orchestra & color guard program. WHO WILL PERFORM? The following acts will perform (not necessarily in this order) on our Solo & Ensemble Night in the LO Theatre: Little Fugue in G minor (BWV 578) J. S. Bach, arr. We inaugurated this event last year, and it was a HUGE SUCCESS! Students from all different eras of our program mingled and reunited and had a great time! All program alumni and booster club folks are invited to attend! Wear your letterman s jackets, warm-ups, or other Osos gear and come help us celebrate 16 years of excellence! Go Osos! DONATIONS NEEDED The band, orchestra and color guard program is in immediate need of donations of the following items. The school budget does not provide for these items. If each student could commit to bring even one item throughout the semester, it would be greatly appreciated, and will help preserve our precious budget money for more urgent issues like instrument repair. Thanks so much to those who have already donated! 1) AA, AAA and 9 volt batteries for our instrument tuners and metronomes. 2) Large bottles of hand sanitizer (helps keep our hands clean before touching their instruments each day and helps to keep our students from getting ill and missing school and rehearsal). HONOR BAND & ORCHESTRA OPPORTUNITIES Participation in an honor bands & orchestras provides a challenging, musicallyrewarding opportunity for students and helps them to advance their musical knowledge and understanding beyond simply playing in their own high school groups. Honor group participation also looks great on college and university applications. Honor groups are extra, meaning that they are in addition to your first commitment, which is to your own program here at Los Osos. Dr. Andress does grant some schedule exceptions to honor band students when overlaps occur, but as always it is the student s responsibility to work this out in advance. We encourage all of our students to seek out an honor band or orchestra experience this school year. The following opportunities are currently available: o 2018 CHAFFEY DISTRICT HONOR BAND Congrats to our Los Osos Wind Ensemble students who were selected from the list to perform in this year s Chaffey District Honor Band. The rehearsals will be on Thursday, January 18, 2018 from 5:00- (transportation on your own), Tuesday, January 23, 2018 from 5:00- (transportation on your own) and on Thursday, January 25, 2018 from 9:00am 2:00pm (school bus transportation provided, excused absence from school that day). The concert will be on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 7:00pm (transportation on your own). All rehearsals and the concert will be held in the Colony High School Theatre (3850 E. Riverside Drive, Ontario, CA 91761). Attire for the concert will be the same as for our home concerts (our official concert apparel no substitutions, please). Jazz Band attire may be different and will be discussed at the rehearsal. CONCERT BAND: Ravi Arretche (Tuba) Logan Crafton (Bass Trombone)

6 Dustin Douty (Trumpet) Katie Glenn (Flute) Natalie Gomez (Trumpet) Samuel Ha (Percussion) Jimin Hong (Clarinet) Edward Lee (Clarinet) Joshua Lin (Percussion) Triston Lopez (Alto Sax) Joshua Nelson (Trombone) Eric Nguyen (Percussion) Dakota Otis (Baritone) CJ Punzalan (Contrabass Clarinet) Cory Reardon (Trumpet) Brenda Robles (Percussion) Charles Rodriguez (Bassoon) Daniel Ruiz (Percussion) Katie Scheirer (F Horn) Kyle Seruga (Clarinet) Lauren B. Strabley (Bass Clarinet) Elijah Tadros (Bass Drum) Taylor Verdugo (Clarinet) JAZZ BAND: Spencer Jenkins (Trumpet) Owen Kawasawa (Trombone) Seth Marshall (Drumset) Max Mineer (Trombone) Paul Najera (Bass) Caleb Pike (Bari Sax) Los Osos has a large program and is in the fortunate position to help fill-in spots in the district honor bands (concert & jazz) in areas where other schools in the district may not be able to provide players. While we certainly have musicians in every section of our own band who are qualified and deserving of a place in the district honor band, our role is to help fill-in spots where we are needed. This is why not all sections are represented in the group that we send each year. There are many honor band & honor orchestra opportunities listed on the Weekly throughout each school year. We hope that our musicians will take advantage of these opportunities. ONWARD! NEW TUBA DONATIONS Now in its 16 th year, our program has some aging instruments. Like last year s trombone fundraising drive (and the euphonium, tenor sax, bass clarinet and Sousaphone ones in prior years - THANKS for making those become a reality!) we are

7 kicking-off a drive to purchase a new St. Petersburg 202N silver concert tuba at a cost of $4, We would like to extend a HUGE thank you to the following donors thus far! Please help us make this a reality! Dr. Sam R. Andress (Program Founder & Director) Nicole Cromwell (Tenor Sax) Class of 2019 Tony Gutierrez (Tenor Sax) Class of 2020 Joshua Nelson (Trombone/Tuba) Class of 2018 Elisa Ochoa (Clarinet) Class of 2021 Emma Ochoa (Clarinet) Class of 2018 Ariana Trinh (Clarinet) Class of 2019 PROGRAM SCRAPBOOK UPDATE We have been working on updating our program scrapbooks, however we are in need of some supplies. In order to keep the books looking uniform and neat, we are asking for gift cards from Hobby Lobby. We also welcome prints from students and parents from all band, orchestra & color guard events. Please include a note with event and name of those in the picture if possible. Thank you for your support as we continue to preserve our program history! 10 Upcoming Schedule of Events: UPDATES are listed in bold type! Please do not prioritize this list! All events listed here carry equal weight and importance in our minds and for our program. A parade performance is as important as a football game, as a booster club meeting, as a concert festival, as a jazz band event at the junior high school, as field show championships. If it s on this list, it s required, and it s important. Please know this! In addition to the school-day class-time rehearsals and the events listed below, Regiment (band and guard) students also participate in weekly marching band rehearsal every Tuesday evening from 5:30- in the football stadium, beginning on the first week of school through until winter break. In addition to the school-day class-time rehearsal and the events listed below, all band and color guard students also participate in a weekly master class rehearsal every Tuesday afternoon from 4:00-5:00pm at the band hall and quad area, beginning the first week of school through until the last week of school. In addition to the school-day class-time rehearsals and the events listed below, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble and Winter Guard students also participate in weekly rehearsals every Tuesday evening, beginning in January and extending through until the last week of school. Call Time Sheets which give specific details (when and where to arrive, what to wear, what to bring with you, etc.) will be posted on this Weekly page approximately one week prior to the scheduled event. Advanced-planning and accountability are very crucial to the success of our program! GO OSOS!
