John Paul Jones Arena ESPN3 duke_wres SETTING THE SCENE Duke begins postseason wrestling after going 6-9 overall and 1-4 against ACC squads. The Blue Devils wrestled seven top-20 opponents this season, going 2-5 overall. Two of the five losses were against top-10 teams in NC State and Virginia Tech. Duke defeated a program-best two ranked opponents this season in No. 13 North Carolina and No. 23 Purdue. The win over the 13th-ranked Tar Heels is the highest ranked team a Blue Devil squad has beaten in program history. Duke finished fourth at the 2015 ACC Championships with 44 points, the highest since a third-place showing in The 44 points are the most since Duke had five wrestlers in the latest RPI rankings and four in the most recent NCAA Coaches panel rankings. Redshirt senior Conner Hartmann is the reigning ACC Champion at 197 pounds, while Mitch Finesilver is back after taking second at 133 pounds a year ago. Jake Faust took fourth at 165. Conner Hartmann and Mitch Finesilver both went unbeaten in ACC duals this season, going th of points #3 #20 L, 9-34 L, Durham, N.C. Pittsburgh, Pa. In the current weight classifications, Duke has nine ACC titles at heavyweight, two at 184 pounds and one at the 197, 174, 133 and 125-pound classifications. Duke has had 30 All-ACC selections since teams were compiled in RECAPPING 2015 ACC CHAMPIONSHIPS Conner Hartmann captured the ACC Championship at 197 pounds as Duke finished fourth overall with 44 points. The finish was the highest since a third-place showing in 2004, while the 44 points are the most since Joining Hartmann with berths in the NCAA Championship were Mitch Finesilver (133), Marcus Cain (149) and Jacob Kasper (184). Cain, Finesilver and Kasper all were first-time qualifiers. OPENING ROUND REMATCHES There will be five rematches in the opening round for the Blue Devils Sunday at 125, 141, 174, 184, and 285. Zach Finesilver, the No. 4 seed, defeated Nick Zanetta of Pitt, 8-1 in the regular season, while Trey Adamson lost a heartbreaker 8-7 to Will Schany in Charlottesville. The other rematches come between Thayer Atkins and Virginia s Nick Hermann at 125, Alec Schenk and Te Shan Campbell of Pitt at 174 and Brendan Walsh and Patrick Gillen from UVA at heavyweight. Duke went 0-3 in those regular-season bouts. DUKE UPSETS NO. 13 NORTH CAROLINA Duke heavyweight Brendan Walsh registered the biggest win of his wrestling career, beating UNC s Cory Daniel 4-3 to lift the Blue Devils to a thrilling victory over the 13th-ranked Tar Heels in Chapel Hill this season. The match featured four lead changes as Duke overcame a forfeit at 133 pounds to upset UNC. The win is the first for Duke over North Carolina since Connor Bass grabbed a crucial pin, while Thayer Atkins, Mitch Finesilver, Jake Faust, Conner Hartmann added wins to lead Duke to victory. DUKE TRENDING UP UNDER LANHAM The numbers are all pointing in the right direction for the Blue Devils with head coach Glen Lanham at the helm. For the first time in program history, Duke defeated a pair of ranked opponents. Duke defeated a Big Ten foe, Purdue, for the second consecutive season. All of the Blue Devils wins over Big Ten opponents have come under Lanham in the past two seasons. The Blue Devils are poised to send at least four wrestlers to NCAAs after landing a program-best five last year. Duke has never sent more than two wrestlers to NCAA Championships in consecutive seasons. TOUGH SCHEDULE The Blue Devils featured a tough schedule this season, wrestling seven top-20 opponents over the course of the year. Duke also battled tough squads in Appalachian State and Gardner-Webb. The Mountaineers climbed into the rankings late in the year and Gardner-Webb defeated Appalachian State. Because of injuries during the year the Blue Devils fielded a full 10-man lineup in just four matches, going 3-1 in those outings. The last Duke wrestler to win consecutive ACC titles was Konrad Dudziak at heavyweight in 2009 and Hartmann hasn t lost in an ACC regular season dual or ACC Championship match since a triple overtime loss to Virginia s Zach Nye in the 2014 ACC Championship first round. HARTMANN IN THE RECORDS BOOK Conner Hartmann has propelled himself into the Duke wrestling records book in both career wins and career win percentage. Hartmann is sixth in career wins with 92 and eighth in career win percentage at.767. The veteran 197-pounder is trying to become Duke s first three-time All-American as well as the Blue Devils first NCAA Champion in wrestling. He is six wins shy of the No. 10 spot in single-season victories with 30. SCHENK MAKING HIS ACC DEBUT Redshirt freshman Alec Schenk will be making his ACC Championship debut Sunday after battling injuries over the course of the season. Schenk wrestled in just two ACC matches this season, losing to Te Shan Campbell of Pittsburgh 9-2 and Nicky Hall of NC State, 12-4 in the regular season. RANKED OPPONENTS Jake Faust is a perfect 5-0 against top-20 opponents this season with all five wins coming against wrestlers in the top 15. Three of his five ranked wins have come against Stanford s Jim Wilson. He beat then No. 4 Wilson in the title match of the Hokie Open 6-2. Faust and Wilson met again at the Southern Scuffle with Faust winning 6-1 and then in the regular season dual in Stanford, the Duke junior won, 9-4. FINESILVER MOVES UP; DOESN T MISS A BEAT Sophomore Mitch Finesilver, a NCAA qualifier at 133 pounds as a freshman, moved up two weights to 149 this season and hasn t missed a beat. Mitch is ranked ninth nationally at 149 with a 25-6 record, took fifth at the Southern Scuffle with three top 20 wins and finished the dual season ALL IN THE FINESILVER FAMILY Twin brothers Mitch and Zach Finesilver help anchor Duke at 149 and 141, respectively. The pair has a combined record this season and both are ranked in the latest NCAA coaches polls. They are responsible for 84 points combined in duals this season, nearly 30 percent of Duke s points on the year. They both excelled at Cherry Creek High School in Colorado and have a set of younger twin brothers who are seniors on the Cherry Creek wrestling team looking to follow in their older brothers footsteps.. 5 GLEN LANHAM Head Coach 4th Season Oklahoma State 88 Record at Duke: Career Record: Glen Lanham was introduced as Duke wrestling head coach April 16, 2012 and has made major strides in each of his seasons at the helm. Lanham s third season was his best as the Blue Devils landed a program-best five wrestlers in the NCAA Championships and posted its highest finish at 28th. Marcus Cain, Mitch Finesilver, Conner Hartmann, Jacob Kasper and Immanuel Kerr-Brown all earned bids to the NCAA field, while Hartmann led the charge with his second All- American performance and sixth-place finish. Overall, three Blue Devils advanced to the second day of competition for the first time in program history. In conference action, Lanham led the Blue Devils to a fourth-place showing at the ACC Championships, the highest finish since a third-place showing in Duke defeated a pair of Big Ten opponents for the first time in program history en route to an 11-5 overall record. In addition to his All-America performance, Hartmann took home the ACC title at 197 pounds, while Kasper and Finesilver both garnered All-ACC honors. Off the mat, Duke ranked sixth nationally in team GPA and had four wrestlers earn NWCA All-Academic honors. The Blue Devils were tops in the ACC in GPA for a second straight year. In just his second season, Lanham landed a Duke wrestler on the podium at NCAA Championships for the third time in the program s history. Hartmann, in his second consecutive appearance at NCAAs, turned in a pair of upsets en route to becoming Duke s second All-American wrestler with a fifth-place showing at 197 points. In addition, for the first time in program history, Duke had two wrestlers - Immanuel Kerr-Brown joined Hartmann who advanced to the second day of wrestling at the NCAA Championships. Kerr-Brown s improvement under Lanham shined through in The Rome, Ga., native posted a career-high 26 wins, five shy of his previous two seasons combined, and took third at ACC Championships. As a team, Duke had its highest finish at NCAA Championships in program history with a 29th-place showing. Overall, Duke finished the year 6-15 after wrestling its toughest schedule in school history. The Duke wrestling program made strides in Lanham s first season at the helm. The Blue Devils finished the year and 1-4 in the ACC. The nine wins were the most since the campaign as Duke sent two wrestlers Brandon Gambucci and Hartmann to the NCAA Championships. It marked the first time since 2009 as well that multiple Blue Devils competed in the NCAA postseason event. On the mat, Gambucci earned All-ACC honors at 133 pounds to earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships. Hartmann finished third at 197 pounds, despite missing the previous month to an injury, and garnered an at-large invitation to the postseason. Overall, Duke placed four wrestlers among the top four in the ACC Championships and had seven different wrestlers place in the various tournaments over the course of the year. Duke was equally as successful in the classroom in Lanham s first season. The Blue Devils landed six wrestlers on the All-ACC Academic Team, while Gambucci and Hartmann earned NWCA All-Academic recognition and the Duke team ranked fifth overall with a team GPA of The Blue Devils also were active in the community, helping handicapped kids learn baseball, visiting local hospitals, and cooking breakfast at the Durham Urban Ministries. Prior to taking over the head coaching position, Lanham served as an assistant coach with the Blue Devils for two seasons. Lanham helped mentor Diego Bencomo and Tanner Hough to NCAA Championship berths in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Under Lanham s tutelage in the wrestling room, Bencomo earned 2011 All-ACC recognition after taking runner-up honors at the ACC Championships at 184 pounds. The Phoenix, Ariz., native went on to register a pair of wins in the NCAA Tournament, becoming just the second wrestler in Duke history to make it to the quarterfinal round. With the help of Lanham in 2012, Hough became the second Duke true freshman to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships after taking fourth at the ACC Championships at 141 pounds. Hough finished his rookie campaign with a overall record. Lanham joined the Duke coaching staff as an assistant in June of 2010 after stints as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State, North Carolina and Purdue. Prior to arriving in Durham, he spent three seasons at Purdue where he spearheaded the Boilermakers recruiting efforts. At Purdue, Lanham had an immediate impact on the program, helping several Boilermakers to breakout seasons. He mentored a selection of student-athletes to the NCAA Championships during his three seasons and under his watch Luke Manuel earned three bids to the NCAA postseason and climbed to as high as fifth nationally at 174 pounds. The Boilermakers two recruiting classes under Lanham garnered a wealth of national honors, including the nation s No. 12 class from InterMat.com in It marked the second straight top-20 national recruiting class for the Boilermakers as they reeled in three of the nation s top-100 recruits, including a pair of 2009 USA Wrestling Junior national champions. Prior to his three years at Purdue, the former Oklahoma State competitor coached at the University of North Carolina for four years. With the Tar Heels, Lanham also worked closely with the middle to upper weight classes and headed their recruiting efforts. In his time in Chapel Hill, Lanham tutored four ACC Champions and nine NCAA Championships qualifiers. He also went to great lengths to improve the Tar Heels program, bringing in an InterMat Wrestling Top-25 recruiting class in Lanham worked as a high school teacher and wrestling coach in Oklahoma from He was at Midwest City High School for seven years, where he mentored several state champions and sent them on to prestigious college programs. While at Midwest City, he also volunteered his time at Oklahoma University, coaching several All-Americans. Lanham served as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma State University from , helping the Cowboys to a pair of NCAA Championships. As a college competitor, he garnered All-American honors at both OSU and the University of Tennessee, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in human service with an emphasis in juvenile counseling in August of He competed internationally as a member of the Sunkist Kids team and was freestyle wrestling All-American.
