CORNER BROOK REGIONAL HIGH GRADUATION SCHOLARSHIP BOOKLET June 2010 This booklet is a list of scholarships that are presented at Graduation ceremonies in June. Every year we contact our sponsors to confirm their intentions to sponsor a scholarship at graduation. A sincere Thank You! is extended to all of our scholarship sponsors who help our school to recognize some of the many accomplishments of our students. THE AARON BRADBURY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The scholarship is awarded in memory of Aaron Bradbury, a student whose talent and creativity in Language Arts, music, and other fine arts endeavours, as well as his involvement in the Student Council enhanced the lives of his family, friends, school & community. This scholarship has a value of $500 and is awarded to a graduating student who demonstrates excellence in Language Arts. CATHERINE LILLIAN BUTT This $500 scholarship is presented in memory of a former graduate, Catherine Lillian Butt, who is best remembered for being an all-round student who had a passion for reading. Catherine Lillian Butt tragically lost her life while returning to the University of New Brunswick in December 2000 where she was studying Criminology & Human Rights with the aspiration of becoming a police officer or a judge. Preference is given to a student who plans to attend the University of New Brunswick. CITY OF CORNER BROOK This $1000 scholarship is generously donated by the City of Corner Brook. The applicant must be a resident of the City of Corner Brook upon graduation. The student must be accepted at a post-secondary institution in Corner Brook for the following September. Contribution to school & community and academic achievement will also be considered. The student cannot be in receipt of other awards/scholarships of equal or higher value. DR. GEORGE COLBOURNE SCIENCE AWARD This $500 scholarship, donated by Dr. George Colbourne, is to recognize excellence in Science. This award is presented to a student who has attained the highest average in his/her Science courses and who plans to pursue a post-secondary program in Science.

EUGENE JOSEPH COLEMAN TRI-COLOUR SCHOLARSHIP This $500 scholarship is generously donated by the family of Mr. Eugene Coleman. The name Tri- Colour represents involvement over three years of high school in the following three areas: Academics, Athletics and Activities. THE COLEMAN FAMILY AWARD for EXCELLENCE in ENGLISH STUDIES This $200 scholarship is presented to a student who has been nominated by the English Department. The student must meet the following criteria: High academic achievement; exhibit a keen insight his or her particular subject area and contribute positively to the class environment. CORNER BROOK REGIONAL HIGH This $1500 scholarship is generously donated by Carolyn and Tony Tavenor. It is based on good work habits. The student cannot be in receipt of other awards/scholarships of equal or higher value. The student must be accepted to attend SWGC in September. CORNER BROOK REGIONAL HIGH COACHES AWARDS This award/medal is based on active participation in a specific sport. The student must be dedicated; dependable; and demonstrate excellent sportsmanship. The individual does not have to be the best player but rather the player who has a passion for the sport, who attends most of the practices and who has a strong sense of fair play. Students are nominated by their coaches and/or teacher sponsors. CORNER BROOK REGIONAL HIGH DEPARTMENT AWARDS These awards/plaques are presented to students from each of the subject areas of Art, English, French, French Immersion, Math, Music, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, Technology and Theatre Arts. The student must meet the following criteria: High Academic Achievement; keen insight into the particular subject area and positive contribution to the class environment. CORNER BROOK WEST SPORTS CLUB This award of $500.00 is donated by the Corner Brook West Sports Club. It is awarded to a student who lives in Corner Brook and who has made a significant contribution to Corner Brook s Athletic program, demonstrating leadership and maintaining a good academic record. The scholarship is awarded to a student who is pursuing post-secondary education. The scholarship shall not only be awarded based upon academics, but on school spirit, attitude, and involvement in school or city sports.

GOVERNOR GENERAL'S ACADEMIC MEDAL This medal is awarded to the student who achieves the highest academic standing in his/her graduating class. Recent changes in the rules dictate that the award can only be calculated after the final marks are released from the Department of Education in July. The recipient will be notified later in the fall. THE WILLIAM HERDMAN SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was originally established by Mr. William Herdman, a prominent citizen of Corner Brook, who believed strongly in the importance of providing a quality education to all youth. Beginning in the 1920 s Mr. Herdman played an integral role in the development of the Public Education System in Corner Brook with the construction and the running of Corner Brook Public School. His commitment continued through the 1950 s with acquiring the financing for Amalgamated Regional High School (Herdman Collegiate). This scholarship of $500 is given to a student who has shown academic excellence and a strong commitment to the betterment of their school. JONES FAMILY EXCELLENCE IN VISUAL ARTS SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship, valued at $250, is donated by Charlotte & Kent Jones to foster excellence in Visual Arts. This scholarship is based on good academics, a strong work ethic, dedication to visual arts as well as contribution to both school and community activities. The student must be planning to attend a postsecondary institution to pursue a Visual Arts programme. BERN JOYCE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Male Athlete of the Year This $500 scholarship is donated by the family in memory of Bern Joyce, a former teacher, who made a significant contribution to his community through his extracurricular activities. It is presented to a student who exhibits true sportsmanship and who exemplifies dedication and commitment as an athlete and who plays for the love of the game. This scholarship and trophy are presented to the best Male Athlete of the graduating class who, during three years of High School, has been involved in a wide variety of sports both at the school and community level. JOE MULLINS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This $200 scholarship is awarded annually in honour of Joe Mullins, an individual who made a significant contribution to his community and to the province. It is presented to a student with strong moral character, who demonstrates leadership, is involved in sporting and community activities, and who shows promise of achievement.

THE MICHAEL MACINNIS AWARD This $500 award is given to a graduating student who maintains a good academic standing in his/her graduating year, and who reflects many of Michael s characteristics and talents. These include being a free spirit, good friend, natural athlete, music lover, and outdoor enthusiast. GARY PARSONS HUMANITARIAN SCHOLARSHIP This $500 award is given to a student who has exemplified the spirit of volunteerism within both the school and the community over the past three years. Mr. Gary Parsons, a former teacher, initiated the Humanitarian Society as he believed that it was important to encourage students to think globally and act locally. He felt that students should be recognized for their hard work. This award has been established to recognize a student who also believes in the value of volunteering and humanitarianism. PRINCIPAL S AWARD OF EXCELLENCE This $500 scholarship is awarded to the student who achieves the highest academic standing in his/her graduating class. Academic standing is calculated based on his/her average in Grade Twelve including courses from: English 3201, Math 3204/05, best L3 Science, L3World Studies/French and any other two credits at L3. ALBERT P. READ ATTENDANCE AWARD A student is nominated by their Homeroom teacher for having exemplary attendance to receive a certificate. If the student has had outstanding attendance for all three years at High School then the Student also receives a plaque. Exemplary attendance refers to: No unexcused absents; no more than 4 lates and no more than 2 absent excused periods. WYCLIFF & ELIZABETH ROBBINS SCHOLARSHIP Wycliffe & Elizabeth Robbins Scholarship, valued at $750, honours the memory of Herdman Collegiate s first principal, Mr. Wycliff Robbins, and has been given annually since 1974. This award is given to recognize excellence and leadership. It is given to a graduating student, who in the opinion of staff, is a good academic student, involved in all aspects of school life and who contributes a great deal through extra and/or co-curricular activities. The recipient is also perceived by his/her peers as having made a worthwhile contribution to the school over the past three years. RBC RBC has graciously donated a $1000 to provide money for a scholarship. It is presented to a student who has chosen to pursue a post-secondary business degree and also recognizes academic achievement. The student cannot be in receipt of other awards/scholarships of equal or higher value.

REG & JOYCE STANFORD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This $1000 scholarship was donated by the family in memory of Reginald (Reg) and Joyce Stanford. Reg was a manger at the Corner Brook Mill. Both Reg and Joyce strongly believed in encouraging their children to excel in education and in helping others. This award is to recognize a good academic student who has demonstrated a caring attitude and dedication to others during his/her three years at high school. The recipient must be planning to attend a post secondary institution in the fall. STUDENT RECOGNITION AWARD The Corner Brook Regional High Graduation Committee has donated $300 to be awarded to a student who is well-rounded and who has been involved with extracurricular activities while maintaining a good academic average RALPH & WINIFRED TULK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship of $1000 is generously donated by Laurie Tulk in memory of his parents. It is based on academic excellence, strong leadership qualities and outstanding contribution to both school and community activities. VICE-PRINCIPALS AWARD Most Improved Student This award is intended to recognize a student s dedication to achieving his/her high school diploma. It acknowledges a student who has taken the initiative to improve his/her work ethic while attending Corner Brook Regional High. JULIAH WARFORD SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is presented in memory of Herdman Collegiate graduate, the late Juliah Warford, Daughter of Maisie and the late Victor Warford. Juliah received a B. Science (Honours) degree majoring in Psychology from Memorial University in 1982 and began her career with the Province of Newfoundland as a Child Management Specialist, working in Deer Lake. She lost her life in a highway accident. The Juliah Warford Scholarship of $500.00 is awarded in recognition of a student who has made a valuable contribution to Corner Brook Regional High through involvement in and contribution to school and community activities while maintaining an excellent academic record.

JULIAH WARFORD AWARD Female Athlete of the Year This sports award is presented in recognition of a female student's valuable contribution to, and participation in, the Athletic Program while exemplifying and encouraging the qualities of excellence and teamwork. It is presented in memory of the late Juliah Warford who graduated from Herdman Collegiate in 1978. Juliah was an avid athlete throughout her academic years and beyond, and her participation brought her much joy and many friendships. This trophy has been donated by the Warford family and the student receives a plaque. THE KRISTOFER WATERMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP A Kristofer Waterman Trust Fund was established to honour the life of Kristofer Waterman. This $500 Scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating student who plans to pursue university studies towards a Music degree. If no music candidate is available the award will go to a student enrolled in a Fine Arts degree programme. CORDS of EXCELLENCE Honours Cords will be awarded based on a student achieving an 80% or better average in an Academic/Advanced/General Program. The highest marks from their Level Three English, best of Math + Science + Social Studies + 2 other Level 3 credits are used to calculate the average as all students must complete these courses to meet Honours graduation requirements. If after public exams, a student s average has increased to the required 80% they are invited to contact the school in September to receive their sash. PRINCIPAL'S ROLL 1 st Class Honours Sashes will be awarded based on a student achieving a 90% or above in an Academic/Advanced/General Program. The highest marks from their Level Three Academic English, best of Math + Science + Social Studies + 2 other Level 3 credits are used to calculate the average as all students must complete these courses to meet Honours graduation requirements. If after public exams, a student s average has increased to the required 90% they are invited to contact the school in September to receive their sash.
