AMVETS POST 2006 DECEMBER 2013 NEWSLETTER Elected Officials' Comments & Remarks Commander's Comments: November has gone into the past and we are now into December with Christmas and a New Years coming up. I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving Day. As I stated in the membership meeting there were some changes made at the SEC in October. One of them being that the Post does not have to keep a copy of the DD form 214. Keeping this on file would make that form a matter of public record and that is against the Privacy Act. We do have to make additions to our roster and ensure that we have the branch of service, date of entry, date of discharge and date of birth on each AMVET. For the Sons and Auxiliary they have to have the same information in addition to who they joined under. These subsidiary organizations must follow their rules in their CBLs. Another change coming up is going to be a change in the membership dues for AMVETS. For annual members the membership dues will be $35.00 a year. This will require a change to the ByLaws and this will be voted on during the Department Convention in June 2014 with an effective date of either September 2014 or 2015. We will find this out during the February SEC. This will mean that we will have to change our CBLs also. The ceremonies for Veterans Day went well. A lot of people were in attendance and listened to three students from Carver Middle School read their essays on "What The American Flag Means To Me." All of them did an excellent job and you could tell that they spent some time thinking of what to put down on paper. Outstanding work students and teachers. At 6:00 PM we had the Balloon Release. Total raised was over $600.00 which will go to the Orlando VA patients for Christmas presents for them. Thanks to Ron Frank for all the work he done on this and also to Mary Jarboe and all the other people who sold the tabs. After the initial ceremony the Honor Guard did two more ceremonies at the Leesburg Moose and the Eagles in Okahumpka. Great work Honor Guard personnel. Thanks for your dedication to service. As far as the Honor Guard goes. We are in need of more personnel. As of 11/11/13 we have only 8 people signed up. We need a minimum of 15. It does take time away from you but you would be part of honoring our veterans at most of our functions. Please consider joining the Honor Guard. You would be part of the personnel exposing our Post to the general public. That will do for this month. I can always be reached at the Post or by phone. I am always available for you. Remember; THIS IS YOUR POST! CHUCK MADRID Post Commander 1st Vice Comments: As the post membership chair, I'd like to thank all those members who have sponsored new members this past year and bringing us to 391 members as of 1 Nov. Our post needs
to grow and the best way to do that is ask you the membership to bring new members into the post The more members we have, the more programs and amenities we can provide. I'm asking all of you to try and bring one new member into our post between now and April. If you believe in the AMVET mission and enjoy our post, why not bring in a friend to enjoy it with you. Now that we have the door key card system we are now able to control access to the post as required by the state of Florida. Only current AMVET, Auxiliary and Son members are authorized to be issued a card. Anyone needing a door key card, please see me or one of the bartenders. Membership renewals will be mailed out sometime in December. Please wait until you receive your 2014 renewal notice before mailing any money to the post. I am preparing a sheet for all members to provide their email addresses so we can disseminate club news as we have it. It will be at the sign in sheet table at the front of the club. Hope you had a happy Thanksgiving. Don Trombley, 1st Vice. Auxiliary President Comments: I would personally like to thank all my officers for stepping up to the plate and running some fantastic functions. A special thank you to Shirley and Judy for their efforts on Veterans Day. As always, a special shout out for all you coupon clippers. Keep up the good work. Ladies, we need some volunteers to do some Taco's on Tuesday. You can do just one any month and it would be a great help. Don't forget the money can go to your favorite charity. Please try to attend our meeting Thursday December 5th or January 2nd and February 6th. This is where our decisions are made and we would love to have your ideas and participation. Meeting starts at 7 pm and is usually over by eight. We have a great group of ladies who attend but I personally would like to see more of you. Ask yourself why? did you join and what can you do to help. Our motto is "We waited together, Now lets Work Together". Claudia Thompson, 1st Vice President Auxiliary 2nd Vice President & Child Welfare Officer: This month has been busy with getting the Children's Christmas List going and planning the Children's Christmas Party.
The gifts on the list from Treadway Elementary School have be in no later than the 11th of December so that the gifts can be delivered to the school and distributed before school lets out for the holidays. As a reminder, please bring a gift for a child for the Christmas Party, scheduled for December 1st. Homer Stiles will be providing the entertainment that evening. Also, bring in a dish as it is a pot luck dinner. These children have little or nothing so please, let's let them have a great Christmas. I also thank anyone who has helped me during these events. Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. God bless you and a special prayer goes out to all members of our Armed Forces who cannot be with us this joyous season. Nancy Madrid, Auxiliary 2nd Vice President Americanism Report: Thanks to all members and friends for a spectacular November. With the help of the Aerie # 4273, The Ladies of Longmeadow, The Ladies of Brittany Estates and the AmVets and Auxiliary 2006, we shipped a total of 29 boxes for the "Adopt A Soldier" Program. The Goodies that the troops have been receiving over the last few weeks have really boosted their morale. We have been packing and will send about 15 more boxes in December. Check the bulletin board for more notes from our soldiers as they are received, we will post them. Let us not forget that in January we will have a bunch of soldiers in Afghanistan, Turkey, Romania and Syria. They are still asking for more goodies to eat. Buy an extra pack of cookies or crackers when you go shopping. We will still ship toiletries as collected. Please no magazines at this time. THANK YOU AGAIN TO ONE AND ALL GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS Judy Cassidy, Americanism Officer Hospital Report: There will be another yard sale in February for St Judes. Start cleaning your closets and re-gift those unwanted Christmas presents. Details will follow in the January newsletter. Thank you for all you do for our charities Robin Moore, Hospital Chairperson Attention AMVETS: As had been stated in previous articles renewal fees for 2014 are $20.00. This is due to the change in membership year. The membership year now runs from September 1 through August 31 of the following year. Because of this change the AMVETS will have a short year this coming year of 8 months. When you renew next year for 2015 the dues will go up to $35.00 annually. Any of you who send in your dues make out your checks to AMVETS Post 2006 instead of Don Trombley. Disregard the notice you got from National for $25.66 and make your check out for $20.00.

HONOR GUARD NEWS: The Honor Guard was proud to host the Veterans Day Ceremony here at this Post. It is always an honor to do something to recognize our veterans in any way we can. Even though we are short on personnel we will always do the best we can. On Veterans Day we also had short ceremonies at the Leesburg Moose and the Eagles in Okahumpka. Again done with pride. The Honor Guard is still looking for more people to perform functions that we are called on to do by our community. Please volunteer some of your time to this unit. The Post will furnish the shirt and all patches and any other accessories needed for the uniform except the pants and shoes. These will have to be furnished by the individual. Dedicating time to this organization does take time away from you but this is one of the few ways you can show your support to veterans, their families and the community.
