COOLIDGE POLICE DEPARTMENT Monthly Activity Report May 2008

Department Activities STAFF MEETINGS/ACTIVITIES: During the month of May Chief Palmer attended a meeting for the Pinal County Law Enforcement Association hosted by Eloy PD in Eloy. Chief Palmer also participated in the Council/Staff Retreat at Central Arizona College. Officer Jordan returns from Iraq: Chief Palmer attended the homecoming in Mesa for Officer Jake Jordan who has been serving with the Army Reserves in Iraq for the past year. PERSONNEL CHANGES: The department is actively working to fill vacancies created by the recent departures of Detectives Vance and Miller and Officer Solberg. The Records Division is also seeking a part time Records Clerk, as Kelly Williams has left to take a full time position. Other recent changes in assignment include: Ashley Appel to School Resource Office, Diana DeLaRosa to Investigations, Rick Hustad to Downtown Beat Officer and Angelo Thomas to GIITEM. INVESTIGATIONS ACTIVITY: During the month of May 2008, the Investigations Unit sent 22 felony cases to the Pinal County Attorney for review. A sex offender was arrested and booked for sexual conduct with a minor and the Investigations Unit is currently looking into other cases in which he could be a suspect. A suspect was located and booked for identity theft and fraud. She has a criminal history of forgery, fraud and identity theft with past arrests by the Investigations Unit. Officer Collazo is currently investigating a group of four suspects for fraud schemes. The suspects entered the Advance America financial store and the Quick Cash store with fraudulent information in order to secure payday loans. Thus far the suspects have fraudulently taken out $1500 in loans. Collazo has compiled enough information to request a warrant for two of the suspects. Page 2 of 16

Major Cases & Investigative Events Copper wire theft: On May 13, officers responded to a report of criminal damage and copper wire theft from a well pump on Martin Road and Nafziger Road. Unknown suspect/s cut the copper wire leads from the pump to the electrical box. Total loss was six strands (fifteen feet each) of copper wire valued at approximately $700. Thief apprehended/stolen property recovered: On May 29, Sergeant Walker was patrolling the rural area of Coolidge north on Christensen Road when he saw two subjects. One was riding a bicycle and the other was pushing a green motorcycle. Due to the hour and with the recent burglaries/thefts Sergeant Walker stopped to conduct a field interview. While he spoke to the two subjects a farm foreman who lives in the area was driving around checking the fields. He approached Sergeant Walker and told him that the motorcycle was his and that it has been parked on his property behind his house. The subject pushing the motorcycle stated that he purchased it. The farm foreman said he could produce a title for the motorcycle, so both subjects were detained. The motorcycle VIN was checked and it came back registered to the farm foreman. One of the subjects told Sergeant Walker that he was on his way to his girlfriends house on Christensen Road when he saw the suspect trying to kick start the bike on the dark dirt road. He said that he offered the suspect light but he was not involved in the theft. The suspect was placed under arrest and charged accordingly. Thief apprehended/stolen money recovered: On May 29, officers responded to the call of a robbery which had just occurred at Coolidge Glass and Mirror. When officers arrived, they learned that a subject had entered the business and was acting suspicious. When the employee left the room, the suspect grabbed the cash box and ran out the business. No threats were made and no weapons were displayed by the suspect. The suspect was quickly located and apprehended. The suspect made a written confession and the cash box and money was recovered and the suspect was charged with burglary. Page 3 of 16
