San Fernando Vall ey Chapter of the AACN America n Associa tion of Critical Ca re Nurses S a n Fe r na n do A A C N J u n e - A u g u s t 2 0 1 8 S AN F ERNANDO V ALLEY AACN Past-President s Message Dear Colleagues in Critical Care, Hi Everyone! President s Message Dear Colleagues in Critical Care, Greetings! It s been a wonderful year as your president. I am handing off the president s role to Lily Santos effective July 1st.We recently has our transition dinner at Maggianos in Woodland Hills that included a very informative lecture on respiratory compromise hosted by Medtronic. I am so proud of this chapter! We had two amazing and successful symposiums, one in Fall and one in the Spring. We could not have had these successes without our very dedicated and hardworking board. Thank you!! We also had an extremely successful CCRN review class in April, sponsored by our chapter and hosted by the wonderful nurses at Valley Pres. Med Ed supplied the speaker who received positive feedback. We helped 11 of our board members with some of the costs of NTI and also provided scholarships to 4 members of our local chapter to help with their registration costs at NTI. NTI in Boston was fantastic. Such a wonderful city rich with history and delicious food. Excellent sessions and leadership workshops and fun celebrations for certification and Nurses Night Out rounded out the four days. Networking was fun and enlightening. Especially with the UCLA chapter! I learned a lot this year as president. I had great support from all the board members and our Chapter Adviser, Edith Woltman and our National advisor, Karen Certalic. I want to thank all the CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 My name is Lily Prasithpramote Santos and I am honored to be the 2018-2019 President of this incredible San Fernando Valley Chapter of AACN. We have a lot of returning board members this year but we also have added a few more newly elected board members. Together, we promise to work hard at providing you with quality educational programs including our popular bi-annual symposiums, certification courses, multiple volunteer opportunities, and so much more. We are committed to sharing the AACN s Vision of dedicating ourselves to create a healthcare system driven by the needs of patients and families where acute and critical care nurses make their optimal contribution. Many of you know that our health care system is undergoing a complete transformation due to multiple federal and state regulations, increased utilization, patients expectations, competition, declining reimbursement, and technology. For the majority of you who still practice in a critical care environment, you most likely have felt some of these changes in one way or another. While some of these changes have been positive, such as the drive to decrease hospital acquired infections and other safety measures, some changes have caused some hardships such as the increasing demands of doing more with less. In May 2018, Lisa Riggs, the 2018-2019 AACN National President, announced her theme, Our Voice, Our Strength at NTI in Boston, MA. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 1

Past-President s Message CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 board members, the liaisons and chapter members for supporting our chapter. I look forward to continuing my relationships with you this upcoming year. I want to thank you all for your commitment and loyalty to this chapter. Please join me in welcoming Lily Santos as your president for the 2018-2019! Lily is awesome! Please reach out to me or any of the board members if you have questions about our chapter. We are here for you! Thank you for an amazing year. Best wishes, Kim Mazziotti, BSN, RN, PCCN Past-President, SFV-AACN President s Message CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 She states that when we use our collective voice and the strength we have as nurses, we can invent our future not become victims of it. Our voice and our strength give us power. The power we need to change this profession we love. She states that [critical care nurses] can create the workplaces we want and need when we use our voice. In order to achieve the type of environment we want in order to best care for our patients, we must come together and advocate for our profession, continue to educate ourselves and stay relevant in our practice, advocate for our patients, and unite. Using SFV-AACN as a platform, we can achieve this together. Reinventing our future must come from us, our community of exceptional nurses, and it will result from the power of OUR VOICE, OUR STRENGTH. This year, we already have ideas in motion on how to bring you relevant, exciting, and evidence-based educational programs. In the Fall, we will be hosting our 1-day critical care symposium on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at the Odyssey Restaurant. We are pleased to let you know that we have already booked a nationally renowned speaker, Mary Kay Bader, a neuroscience/critical care clinical nurse specialist who specializes in neuro-trauma. We hope you will be able to join us for this event. If not, don t worry because we will be planning all year long for various educational programs to offer you. Thank you for your support in our chapter. We would not be able to do this without you. I look forward to meeting you in the coming months. Warmest regards, Lily Prasithpramote Santos, MSN, RN, CCRN SFVAACN President 2018-2019 1 2
