Dementia UK Job Description and Person Specification Job Title: Consultant Admiral Nurse (CAN) Salary: 45,000-50,000 Location: Home based. Geographical area to be identified and agreed with Senior Consultant Admiral Nurses Hours of work: Full time roles are based on a 5 day week of 40 hours including a daily lunch break of one hour. Contract: Full time, substantive contract. Reporting to: Locality Senior Consultant Admiral Nurse Job Summary The post holder will clinically support new Admiral Nurse Teams for their first 6 months in post by providing expert professional advice, guidance and support. With support from the Senior Consultant Admiral Nurse (SCAN), the CAN will work in collaboration with the Business Development, Service Evaluation and Professional & Practice Development Teams to ensure that Admiral Nurses receive ongoing support with their professional development, meet the requirements of the AN Competency Framework and have ongoing support with their host organisation. The Consultant Admiral Nurse will maintain their clinical competence by an active involvement in clinical practice, which could include, having a small clinical caseload or by providing specialised dementia advice and interventions. The post holder will have responsibility in the four main areas: 1. Professional Leadership & Consultancy analyse, synthesise and evaluate practice: - provide specialist expert nursing advice and consultation at local and national levels on the identification, implementation and evaluation of evidence based interventions with families living with the effects of dementia. 2. Expert Practice - demonstrate advanced clinical, expert nursing practice, knowledge, training and experience in relation to dementia care. Ability to identify risks and benefits of new developments in this area of practice and to provide clinical supervision to others. 3. Service, Practice and Policy Development the post holder will translate the charity s strategic vision and plans into practice in order to support new Admiral Nurse Teams throughout the UK. The role will focus on developing the standards, nursing care, practice and services delivered to families living with dementia throughout designated areas of the UK. 1

4. Education, Training, Research and Development identify the education and training needs of various disciplines of staff, including those from other partner agencies, who provide care and treatment to people affected by dementia. Work with relevant agencies, to influence, develop and deliver appropriate teaching, learning and education. Work with relevant stakeholders to influence the research agenda at local and national levels and to actively participate in relevant research activity in the clinical field. Key Responsibilities: To foster new and creative partnerships to demonstrate that Dementia UK is at the forefront of collaborative working, and to promote clear, seamless care along the dementia pathway consistent with the needs of local health systems. To provide expert clinical advice, guidance and leadership to the geographic area regarding dementia care for people living with dementia and their family caregivers. To identify opportunities for arranging Admiral Nurse clinics and awareness raising events in conjunction with the Lead Admiral Nurses: Clinics and Awareness Raising To maintain clinical competence by negotiating appropriate clinical involvement for the equivalent of 1 day per week. To promote the delivery of person-centred and relationship approaches when working with families living with the effects of dementia. To demonstrate clearly the knowledge, and values identified in the Admiral Nursing Competency Framework and to be a role model for Admiral Nurses. To increase awareness of Admiral Nursing and Dementia UK by developing, promoting and supporting local fundraising and awareness raising activity. To use knowledge of the sector and competitors to identify and develop Admiral Nursing s unique selling propositions and differentiators and to use this as a basis for strategic development within the geographical area. To work collaboratively with the Business Development Team to identify the optimum time to transfer the responsibility for setting up an Admiral Nurse Service. Proactively and constantly look for and capture potential opportunities where Dementia UK can gain value; income, influence, savings or other, by working with external partners. To use clinical and knowledge to help guide and enhance the co-production methodology to be used ensuring people living with dementia and their family carers are included and valued. To act as an expert resource to regional Business Development Officers (BDO) & Service Evaluation Team in developing and implementing local services. To use clinical and knowledge to provide clinical governance to new services as needed. To make robust assessments of service development opportunities. To present complex qualitative and quantitative data and information in a coherent manner. To make use of clinical background and knowledge to initiate, develop, and maintain strategic relationships with organisations and individuals in line with the Strategic Plan. To work closely with the BDO within the geographical area to develop a strategic plan for recruitment of Admiral Nurses. To gather information, and then, in partnership with colleagues, develop effective approaches to approved new contacts/partners. 2

Ensure the appropriate use and promotion of the Dementia UK brand and the development of service models. General Establish methods for gathering and sharing good practice, local intelligence and experiences across Dementia UK. Work collaboratively with colleagues in Fundraising & Communications to ensure that voluntary income opportunities, and communications activity, are maximised. Contribute to the development and running of national initiatives which are developed and delivered through cross-departmental working. To work in a manner that facilitates inclusion, particularly of people with dementia and family carers. To administrate and organise own work to ensure that it is accurate and meets quality targets, reasonable deadlines and reporting requirements. Build and maintain a strong knowledge of Dementia UK s activities & services. To work within the policy framework of Dementia UK. To adopt an anti-discriminatory approach in all aspects of the role. To fully utilise corporate DUK practices in project and programme management, business process design and knowledge management, inputting into the further development of same. Person Specification The preferred candidate will have the following experience, abilities and aptitudes: Criteria Essential Desirable Qualification Knowledge and Experience Educated to, or working towards Masters degree in a health and social care subject or equivalent qualification or experience. Registered Nurse. (RMN/RGN/RNLD) Strong understanding of health and social care systems and of challenges and opportunities in the context of the external environment. Demonstrates an understanding of the impact of dementia on family caregivers and people with the diagnosis of dementia. Significant post registered experience in dementia. Evidence of recent and on-going personal and professional development. Working knowledge of the current commissioning environment, current funding streams and national policy drivers as it relates to health and social care. Local knowledge of the commissioning environment. Experience of developing and managing projects. Proven track record in identifying and rapidly responding to new business opportunities. Skills Experience of recent involvement in practice/ service development.
