SUMMER 2016 Echoes of Memories NEWSLETTER FOR ALUMNAE AND FRIENDS OF BISHOP CONATY OUR LADY OF LORETTO HIGH SCHOOL

www.bishopconatyloretto.org LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL After more than thirty years of serving the young women of Bishop Conaty Our Lady of Loretto High School as a teacher, administrator and nine years as principal, I have decided to resign. I cherish the memories of serving each student and parent. But it is time to move on and pass the school s traditions of faith and academic excellence on to new leadership. It is my greatest hope that the young women of Bishop Conaty Loretto will continue to flourish and find success. Your continued support is essential to keep the 92 year legacy of educating young women of Los Angeles vibrant and thriving. It is my pleasure to introduce the new principal of Bishop Conaty Our Lady of Loretto High School Andrea Jenoff. Ms. Jenoff brings a wealth of educational leadership experience to her new role as principal of Bishop Conaty Our Lady of Loretto with over 20 years in school leadership roles. Most notably, Mrs. Jenoff served for ten years as principal of Carlmont High School in Redwood City where she was responsible for leading the school in a major turnaround, increasing enrollment, building a top-ranked academic program and a leader in math and science, and renovating numerous state-of-the-art campus facilities. I am confident that Ms. Jenoff will continue the work we have started and lead Bishop Conaty Loretto to continued success. I ask for your prayers as I move on, as I will keep you and the young women of Bishop Conaty Loretto in my prayers. Richard A. Spicer Principal

323-737-0012 Summer 2016 College Bound Bishop Conaty Our Lady of Loretto High School s 92nd graduating class was more than ready to receive their diploma and begin the next chapter of their life. Alumnae Justice Carol Codrington 77 delivered the keynote address. Her inspirational message pointed to the God of miracles as the rewarder of hard work and integrity. This year again, 100% of our graduating class has been accepted to the college or university of their choice. Valedictorian Dianne graduated with a 4.4 GPA and was accepted to all seven universities to which she applied. Dianne attributes her dedication to education to her grandfather who taught her to work hard using the gifts God has given her. With seven acceptance letters to choose from, Diane ultimately committed to attend UC Irvine with a major in Computer Science and a minor in Digital Arts. Other BCL 2016 majors include Biology Premed, Biology, Psychology, Business Administration, Environmental Science, Nutrition and Dietetics and of course Teaching and Law. Like every class before them, they will become women leaders who impact the world. BCL 2016 ATTENDING Azusa Pacific University Biola University Cal Poly Pomona California State University (East Bay, Fullerton, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Northridge) Citrus College El Camino College Glendale City College Grand Canyon University Hawaii Pacific University Los Angeles City College Los Angeles Trade Technical College Marist College Marymount California University Miami University, Ohio Mount St. Mary s College, New York Mount St. Mary s University, Los Angeles Oregon State University Pasadena City College San Francisco State University Santa Monica City College University of California San Diego University of California, Irvine University of La Verne Joan Crishal Scholarship The Joan Crishal Scholarship was initiated to assist Bishop Conaty Our Lady of Loretto College Bound young ladies interested in Engineering or the Sciences. Joan first learned about BCL through a donor supporting our all-girl education program. As a woman and a pioneer in the Engineering field Joan caught the vision of how she would like to make a difference. This annual gift has provided more than $35,000 in Scholarships. Joan s hope is BCL will continue to graduate extraordinary young ladies who will earn their post-secondary degree and impact the world but she recognizes the financial constraints faced by many of our students. This year s awardee Aracely will attend UC San Diego as an Environmental Science major with a specialty in Policy. Her ultimate goal is to work for the U.S. government ensuring air and water regulation across the country but her heart s desire is to contribute towards improving water systems in her parent s homeland, El Salvador.

323-737-0012 LEAVE YOUR LEGACY Carmen Fraga Alumnae Carmen Fraga (1950 known to her classmates as Little Carmen ) passed away early 2015. After graduating Catholic Girls High School, Carmen followed her mother s footsteps into a brief modeling career prior to being hired into the legal department of Cal Trans where she ultimately retired. Carmen always remembered her humble beginnings in Los Angeles and was able to identify with today s student in that she was the child of immigrant parents and was no stranger to financial difficulties. She joyfully reminisced on her school days with friends and anyone who would listen. Carmen was especially interested in keeping the allgirl Catholic education tradition alive far beyond her lifetime. A portion of her estate was directed to Bishop Conaty Our Lady of Loretto High School. This thoughtful gift will benefit Bishop Conaty Loretto young woman for generations to come through the Carmen Fraga Scholarship Fund. Your support through a planned gift will ensure inner-city young ladies will have the opportunity to be transformed into women leaders by receiving a quality Catholic education at Bishop Conaty Our Lady of Loretto High School. Consider including a gift that will benefit BCL for generations to come. REQUIEM IN PACEM Marguerite Shoemaker 1936 Mary E. Summer 2016 Educational Field Trips Every year BCL attempts to build in learning experiences outside of the classroom. We need your help to continue these programs. Taking learning out of the classroom is essential for the demographic we currently serve. Some of our girls have never been able to experience some of the greatest informal learning sites in Los Angeles. This year s educational trips included the following universities and cultural sites: Cal Poly Pomona Cal State Long Beach Chapman University Loyola Marymount Mount Saint Mary s University Los Angeles Zoo Arboretum Natural History Museum Freshman Briana experienced her first museum trip with BCL. Her sister who is a few years older visited the Natural History Museum on a BCL field trip and provided a few insights. Through her sister s experience, Briana felt like she had an idea of what to expect but really couldn t have imagined all the day held in store for her. She fully enjoyed the entire visit but was most fascinated with the Gem and Mineral Hall. An Ethopian white opal with so many other beautiful colors really caught her eye. This was not a stone she had ever seen before. Briana went home full of excitement as she shared the details of the day and describe this beautiful opal to her family. It really touched Briana to learn that her mother once had an opal ring that sounds much like the opal she saw at the museum. Briana hopes she can revisit the museum with her mother. Today, BCL serves a population that has limited access to local venues that many of us take for granted. Our families are many times dealing with instabilities caused by job loss, health issues and life in general. Unfortunately, they are simply unable to provide family outings to local sites or college visits. Please consider making a gift today that will continue to allow our students learning opportunities beyond the classroom. Class Activity Last year, class gifts resulted in nearly $5,000 and directly supported financially deserving students with tuition assistance. 1955...$1,265 1969...$300 1965...$2,155 1972...$1,172 Bishop Conaty Our Lady of Loretto is a natural location for alumnae seeking reunion information. As you are planning your reunion or get-together, please provide us the information and allow us to assist with coordinating your class gift. BC Class of 1986 30th reunion will be held at Bishop Conaty Our Lady of Loretto High School on August 13 from 11:00am to 4:00pm. Contact Herlinda Rodriguez for additional details herlindaz29@yahoo.com. Loretto Ladies Class of 1966 held their 50th class reunion June 18, 2016 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Costa Mesa. The ladies had so much fun reminiscing on the days of old. Bishop Conaty 57 is in early planning stages of their 60th reunion to be held on Sunday, April 30, 2017. Please visit bishopconatyloretto.com /alumnaenews to indicate your attendance. Please direct all inquiries to Pat Rosero ppimatwo@outlook.com.
