The department is having B.Tech course in Civil Engineering with an intake of 60 students and M.Tech course in Geomechanics and Structures with an early intake of 18 students. The faculty members are drawn from practising professionals and academicians with highest calibre to enhance the delivery of academic programmes in the department and a good consultancy team. Association of Civil Engineering Students [ACES] Association of Civil Engineering Students ACES 2013 was inagurated by by Dr. P.K.Aravindan, Former Professor, IIT Madras & Structural Consultant on 23 rd Aug 2013. He gave a technical talk on How to solve Civil Engineering field problems after the inaguration programme. RACE 2013 A two day National Conference on recent advances in civil engineering, RACE 2013, was organized by Civil Engineering Department on 2013. It was inaugurated by by Dr. Jessy Mathai, Professor & Head of the Department, Hindustan University, Chennai. 2 Dr Jessy Mathai delivered a key note address on Behaviour of retrofitted RC columns using glass fibre reinforced polymer and carbon fibre reinforced polymer on the first day of Conference. its Simplicity in the afternoon session of 7 th September 2013. Quiz, Paper presentation, Best civil Engineer, Best Manager, Civil Engineering Design and Treasure hunt. An exhibition of building materials and new trends in design was also conducted. Talk by Dr Jessy Mathai There was a session key note on Performance-based seismic design of RC framed buildings delivered by Dr Jiji Anna Varughese, Professor, Department of Civil Engineerin g, RIT, Kottayam. Talk by Dr Jiji Anna Varughese Dr. Joanna B F, Professor of Civil Engineering Department, Hindustan University, Chennai delivered a key note address on Seismic performance of reinforced concrete beam-column with 40%fly ash in the forenoon session. Talk by Er Rahul Leslie The sessions were highly informative and it motivated the students for their professional life and provided eminency for their future. About 150 students from final year B. Tech and M. Tech attended the conference. Nearly thirty papers in various streams of Civil Engineering were presented from colleges in Kerala and nearby States. The Convener of the conference was Prof.P Eapen Sakaria, Professor and Head Department of Civil Engineering, SAINTGITS COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING. Co-Convener was Prof. T M Matthai and Organizing Secretaries were Er. Milu Mary Jacob and Er. Hashifa Hassan. Treasurer of Race 13 was Er. Sunitha Daniel. ETERNIA 2013 The annual technical festival ETERNIA 13 was inaugurated by Er Shelly S Fernandez, Chairman of Indian Concrete Institute, Kochi Centre on 26 th August 2013. Lighting the lamp Activities for the year A Concrete Mix Design competition was conducted for BTech students in association with ICI Students Chapter on 28 th March 2014. Three batches with 6 students each of S6 CE have participated for the competition from our college under the guidance of Er. Sunitha A Daniel and Er Sneha M Varghese. There was 25 teams from 10 different colleges and out of these, a team consisting of Acxa Kuriakose, Jyothis Pious, Jino Jacob Sebastian, Vignesh Ravi, Arun R and Kishore M of our college secured third prize. AICTE-IPS Sponsored All Kerala Technical Project Exhibition, SRISHTI 2014 was organized by our college in association with All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE-IPS), Kerala Financial Corporation (KFC), Startup Village, Saintgits Industrial Research Centre (SIRC) and Saintgits Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SCIE) on 25 th and 26 th of February 2014. Talk by Dr Joanna B F Er. Rahul Leslie gave a session key note on The Pushover Analysis, Explained in Inaugural ceremony Staff Co-ordinator of the event was Er. Swapna Thomas and student coordinator was Jithin Kurian Andrews of S7 CE. More than 300 participants from various Engineering colleges across the state participated in different technical events like On day 1, the competitions were within each streams. Dr. Reebu Zachariah Koshy and Dr. Anitha Joseph from TKM engineering college, Kollam and Er. Sunitha Daniel and Er. Sujith P Abraham were the judges. The two teams selected for the final round competition on day 2 are (i)analysis of the efficacy of resinous materials for the rejuvenation of clayey soil - Tracing back the footsteps with modern insight, from College of Engineering, Trivandrum and (ii)

3 Compact biofilter and root zone unit for waste water treatment, from Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam. Best civil engineering project, Compact biofilter and root zone unit for waste water treatment received a cash prize of Rs. 12,000/-. and Wayanad accompanied by the staff members Er. Jeevan Joseph and Er. Swapna Thomas. of Panachikad panchayat. Best Civil Project A three day add on course on MS- Excel was offered for S3 CE students on 9 th Dec to 11 th Dec, 2013.Resouce persons were Er. Vincy Koshy and Er. Joe G Philip. One week add on course on 3dsMax was offered for S5 CE students by Planners group, Changanacherry on 6 th Jan to 10 th Jan,2014. A one week survey camp was organized for S7 CE students during Dec 2013 under the guidance of Er. Sujith P Abraham. Faculty of our department have taken up several consultancy works like testing of concrete and steel, soil testing, water quality analysis, tests on aggregates and mix design for various agencies like Southern Railways and construction firms like Vellappally constructions,chandy sconstructions,re gal Homes etc. An amount of Rs. 1,41,640/- was collected from the consultancy works. Students of S7 CE went for educational tour to Ooty,Kodaikanal, Coorg and Mysore accompanied by the staff members Er. Shyla Joseph A and Er. Balu E Geoege. Tour Photo of S7 CE Students of S5 CE went for educational tour to Banglore, Mysore, Coorg S5 CE Educational Tour Students of S3 CE made an industrial visit to a Construction site at Ernakulam and then as a part of recreation they visited Veega Land,Cochin. Er. Joe G Philip and Er. Vincy Koshy accompanied the batch. As a part of social commitment, S7 CE students organized a 7-day awareness program on water contamination and and its prevention in wards 8,9,10,11,12,13 and 14 of Panachikad grama panchayat. Necessary instructions were given to the villagers for implementing the central govt scheme JALANIDHI which ensures the supply of fresh water. An awareness programme on Blood Donation was done by S7 CE at Panachikad grama panchayat for a period of 5 days from Dec 8 to Dec 12,2013. Basil Jaimon and Abhijith L of S7 CE conducted an awareness programme on Traffic rules and Road safety on 20 th Dec 2013 for the students of class 6 th and 7 th at AUP School, Kannambra, Palakkad. Traffic Rules and Regulations On 16 th Dec 2013, S5 CE Students educated the villagers on the importance of waste management. A booklet with useful information regarding pipe composting was distributed in the houses Awareness on Blood Donation Booklet on Pipe Composting S5 CE students visited A.P.M Govt. U.P School, Kumarakom on 17 th Dec 2013 and they cleared the surroundings and planted different flowering plants and bushes with full fledged support of School authorities. S5 CE students also conducted a mass cleaning programme in Municipal Park and nearby roads in Kottayam on 18 th Dec. On 19/12/2013, students of S5 CE conducted a social visit to Raksha Bhavan shelter home for poor and discarded people at Chethipuzha. Students of S3CE visited Pathiramanal Island and cleaned the premises on 11/12/2013. It made a sense of keeping the environment clean. S3 CE students conducted an awareness programme on diseases in summer season to the people of Panachikad Panchayat on 12/12/2013. A farewell party was arranged for the final year students on 28 th April, 2014 by our department. Principal Dr. M.C.Philipose, Vice Principal Prof. Koshy Varghese and HOD Prof. Eapen Sakaria addressed the gathering.

4 Text book of Design of cylindrical shells and folded plates by P.C.varghese was gifted to all the ten gate qualified students. Four best internal projects were given a cash prize of Rs. 2500/- each. First prize was given to the project titled Improvement proposals for a three arm junction at Manipuzha under the guidance of Er. Susan Rose and the project team includes Ann Mary Eapen, Elza Maria Rony, Sandra Sajen, and Neethu Mariam Mathew. Second prize was given to Site investigation and geotechnical design of foundations for kochi metro rail project, under the guidance of Prof. Hari.G and the team members are Basil Jaimon, Abhijith L, S Navendu and Riju Kuriakose. Project team with Er. Susan Rose Project team with Prof. Hari G Third prize was for the project titled Proposal of one way system in kottayam under the guidance of Er. Cherian C.K. Team members are Asha Philip, Rajalakshmi Kaipillil and T. Aparna Sunil. Project team with Er.C.K.Cherian Fourth prize was for the project titled Soil stabilisation using waste fiber materials guided by Er. Hashifa Hassan P and the team members are Ann Maria Thomas, Anjan. K, Julit James and Reeba Jacob. Project team with Er. Hashifa Hassan Final year students had arranged a party for staff members on 26 th April 2014 at Lake Palace Resort, Alappuzha. Party at Lake Palace Resort Magazine Release Final year students have released a class magazine 33/33 in connection with their farewell Department Advisory Board (DAB) meeting was held on 18 th Feb 2014 in the College Seminar Hall to assess vision, mission, PEO s and PO s of the department. The meeting was presided over by the Principal Dr. M.C.Philipose. DAB Meeting held on 18/2/14 Achievements of Students Rajalekshmi Kaipallill of S7 CE was selected as the Best Manager in the Technical fest ASCEND organized by Department of Computer Science, Saintgits College of Engg. during Aug 2013. She also won the Best short film award for of Engg during March 2014. Anand N J of S7 CE won Second Prize for paper presentation at GISAT Engg College and won CAD SPEEDESTER for Technical fest HORIZON at Saintgits College of Engg. during Sept 2013. He also attended two day workshop for Engineers by Water Authority, Trivandrum during Nov 2013. Alex P Mathew of S8 CE won First prize for Best Choreography, of Engineering and secured First prize for Best Choreography, EKATHRA 14 at Sreebudha College Jithin Xavier of S8 CE won First Prize for Malayalam poetry writing in PRATHITYA 14 at Saintgits College of Engineering during March 2014 Geethu R of S8 CE won First prize for Best Choreography in Asha Elizabathe Sunny of S8 CE won First Prize for poem writing in Marina Mariam Paul of S8 CE won First prize for Best Choreography, Mithra R of S8 CE won First prize for face painting, PRATHITYA 14 at Saintgits College of Engineering during March 2014. Dhanya Sara John and Shilpa Rajeev of S8 CE won Second prize for face painting in PRATHITYA 14 at Saintgits College of Engineering during March 2014. Safy Rachel Abraham of S8 CE won First prize for Mehandi in Jacob Thomas,Jithin Xavier and Nikhil Francis of S7 CE won Third Prize for Inter Collegiate football

5 tournament in Adoor IHRD and Third Prize for Inter Collegiate football tournament in MBC, Kuttikanam. They also secured Third Prize for Inter Collegiate football tournament in TOCH College, Ernakulam and Third Prize for University football tournament during Oct 2013 Josna J D, Princy Abraham,Akshima Pradeep and Mithra R of S8 CE participated for Paper presentation in Holy Kings College of Engineering on 15/3/14. Ann Maria Thomas and Anjana K of S8 CE participated for Paper presentation in Holy Kings College of Engineering on 15/3/14. Ananad N J of S8 CE won consolation prize for My BIG Idea Competition for his Innovative concept RAINFLOWER during March 2014. Jose P Francis of S5 CE won First Prize for Photography competition at GISAT Engg College during Oct 2013. Gify M Markose, Hafees Insan, Roby K Roy, Sarath P Shaji of S5 CE won First Prize for Treasure Hunt at GISAT Engg College during Oct 2013. Jose P Francis, Gify M Markose and Vignesh R of S6 CE won First Prize for Event Enigma held at SJCET,Pala during March 2014. Hafees Insan of S6 CE won Third Prize for Mappila Pattu competition for RAGAM 14 held at NIT,Calicut during March 2014. Ten students of S8 CE, Basil Jaimon, Ann Maria Thomas, Nimesh Narayan, Sreyas Sanadhanan, Riju Kuriakose, Jithin Kurian Andrews,Nimmy Lancelot, Yedhukrishnan.M.S, Safy Rachel Abraham and Sreekumar K.K qualified the GATE 2014 Examination. Achievements of Staff Er. Dipty sarin Jacob joined for Ph.D on part time basis at NIT, Caliaut. Er. Balu E George joined for Ph.D at IIT,Madras. Er. Jeevan Joseph joined for Ph.D at IIT,Mumbai.. Er. Milu Mary Jacob, Er. Hashifa Hassan P and Er. Swapna Thomas attended short term training programme on Earthquake Resistant Design and Structural Rehabilitation at RIT, Pampady during 01/07/13 to 05/07/13. All Civil Engineering faculty attended two week workshop on Engineering Mechanics under National mission on education through ICT(MHRD, Govt. of India) from 26 th Nov to 6 th Dec 2013 conducted by IIT Bombay. Er. Joe G Philip, Er. Balu E George, and Er. Jeevan Joseph attended one day ISTE workshop on Green Building awareness under National mission on education through ICT(MHRD, Govt. of India) at SJCET,Pala. Er. Hashifa Hassan P presented a paper titled Soil Structure interaction effects on Reinforced concrete buildings under seismic loading for National Conference at Govt College of Technology, Coimbatore organized by IGS, Coimbatore Chapter on 22/04/14. Er. Ajesh K Kottuppillil and Er. Hari G published a paper on Missing mass correction in seismic analysis using Fourier amplitude spectra for RACE 2013. Prof. P Eapen Sakaria published a paper on Structural behavior under loading predominance ; Structural damage diagnostic technique using time series ; seismic response of RC building by considering soil structure interaction ; and Experimental investigation on cement stabilized soil block for RACE 2013. Er. Sindhu A R and Er. Hari G published a paper on Prediction of soaked CBR value by soil index properties for Laterite soil of Central Kerala for RACE 2013. Er. Milu Mary Jacob published a paper on Structural integrity assessment on M250 grade miraging steel pressure vessel and Analysis of Multilayer compound cylinders for RACE 2013 Er. Joe G Philip published a paper on Effect of micro pile on foundation settlement a model study for RACE 2013 Er. Hari G published a paper on Shear strength behaviour of sand compaction piles in soft clay, for RACE 2013 Er. ENGINEERING Issue4 FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME A two day faculty development programme (FDP) on Design of composite steel and concrete structures as per eurocode- 4 (env 1994-1-1) was organized by the Civil Engineering Department on 8 th & 9 th May 2014 in association with Saintgits Chapter of ICI and ISTE Chapter. The programme was inaugurated by Mr Thomas T John, Director, Saintgits Group of Institutions. The chief guest of the programme was Dr. S.R.Satish Kumar, Professor, IIT Madras. He delivered a key note address on Steel Concrete Composite Construction in the forenoon and a talk on Seismic Behaviour of Composite Structures in the afternoon session of the first day. The sessions highly motivated post graduate students and teaching faculty. The other resource persons were Dr. N. Uma Maheswari, Professor, SRM University, Chennai and Prof. P.
